You\u2019ll be happy to know that telephone counselling is still popular, and with good reason. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is telephone counselling? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s exactly what it sounds. It means you do your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-therapy-12-key-points.htm\">talk therapy sessions<\/a> over the phone, with a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/registered-therapists-quality-standards-uk.htm\">registered, licensed mental health professional<\/a>. They create a safe space for you to discuss your thoughts, feelings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">life struggles<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">A proper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/online-counselling-psychologists.htm\">telephone counsellor<\/a> has the same training and certification as any other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Telephone therapy is used to offer<\/strong> general counselling, but also has a history of being used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/dialectical-behaviour-therapy-london.htm\">dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freuds-main-theories-psychoanalysis.htm\">psychoanalysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is a phone therapy session like? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Telephone counselling follows the same format as regular talk therapy. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The first session is an assessment to decide if you can work well together. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sessions are then arranged for a certain time each week. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They are carried out in privacy (a quiet room in your home or office on your end).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You show up on time (but in this case you call in).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Work is carried out for the agreed on time window, usually from 30 minutes to an hour. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you must cancel a session, you do so within the time limit agreed on with your therapist, often 48 hours before. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 5 main benefits of therapy of the phone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So why would you choose phone therapy over regular, in person therapy? <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Nobody is looking at you. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The obvious benefit for many who choose telephone counselling is that you avoid being looked at. This can be very freeing if you suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">social anxiety<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\"> introversion<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shyness-in-adults.htm\">shyness<\/a>. Or if you are ill or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">injured<\/a>, and find the idea of looking presentable very stressful, or simply don\u2019t have the energy for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">2. They find they open up more in the presence of someone. Or they love technology and chatting over video.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But some of us come from another generation, where<\/strong> all our long, heartfelt chats were over the phone. It\u2019s our comfort zone. And we also share more when we are in our own environment. If this is you, given that therapy works best when we are open, phone therapy could be an ideal format.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3. It avoids fiddly, unreliable technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Not a tech person? Or even from those generations? Just feel in a panic the moment you have to deal with spotty wifi or a headset? Telephone counselling avoids all this mess. You pick up the phone and dial, and that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Live in a remote area and can&#8217;t get to a therapist&#8217;s office? But have anxiety about privacy issues when using the internet, or feel you are being spied on if you use your mobile phone? You can do phone therapy sessions over a fixed landline which can feel safer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">4. It is more convenient if getting away is a challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Have a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workaholic-symptoms.htm\"> crazy schedule<\/a>? Or stuck at home taking care of kids, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/caregiver-mental-health-taking-care-of-you-when-taking-care-of-others.htm\">an elderly family member<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-illness-and-children.htm\">a loved one who is ill<\/a>? Telephone therapy means you can still attend therapy sessions without having to arrange for care, or leave the comfort of your home. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">5. Telephone counselling saves time and money. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Going to and fro from a therapist\u2019s office is a delight to some people who enjoy the timeout from their regular schedule. For others, it\u2019s just plain stressful. And a huge time and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">money drain<\/a>, given the cost of arranging for baby-sitters, taking transport, or paying for petrol and parking. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Telephone therapy, done from the comfort of your home or office, saves the time, energy, and cost of travelling. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/232525498_Effectiveness_of_telephone_counseling_A_field-based_investigation\">survey of almost 200 users of telephone therapy<\/a> found that <strong>80 per cent felt the original issue that had them seeking out therapy in the first place had improved.<\/strong> And they reported higher satisfaction with their sessions than a group doing in-person sessions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0165032719311723\">2020 meta analysis<\/a> of ten studies also <strong>concluded that doing psychotherapy over the phone for depression was as effective as other forms of therapy. <\/strong>(In fact statistically it rated as a little bit <em>more<\/em> effective).
