And now have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-overwhelmed-with-life.htm\">mental health issues<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In July 2021 Britain&#8217;s Office of National Statistics (ONS) <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/conditionsanddiseases\/bulletins\/prevalenceofongoingsymptomsfollowingcoronaviruscovid19infectionintheuk\/1july2021\">reported<\/a> 1.5 per cent of the population were claiming long Covid symptoms.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Covid and mental health <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Physical illness has long been connected to mental health issues<\/b>, so in one way, this is not a surprising situation.<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1505745\/\"> Research suggests<\/a> that around 10 per cent of patients in primary care suffer from depression, for example. And conditions with similarities to Covid, like influenza and respiratory tract infections, have long been been known to lead to psychiatric and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-neuropsychiatry.htm\">neurological diagnoses<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>What is concerning is the sheer rate of<\/strong> people reporting mental health issues post Covid.<\/p>\n<h3>The statistics about Covid and mental health<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(21)00084-5\/fulltext\"> landmark research paper<\/a> published in April 2021 <strong>looked at medical records of over 230 thousand Americans. <\/strong>It concluded that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Just over 30 per cent had a neurological or psychiatric diagnosis within six months of having Covid-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">For 12 per cent of these patients, it was their first such diagnosis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">If a patient had been hospitalised or admitted to intensive care, those statistics rose to 46 per cent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Neurological and psychiatric diagnoses were more likely to follow Covid than influenza and respiratory tract infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The worse the Covid infection, the higher the chance in general of a mental health diagnosis. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Patients who experienced delirium or altered mental states during Covid had higher rates of mental health issues in the six months to follow. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">So I have a one in three chance of mental health issues post Covid? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-123330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/national-cancer-institute-NFvdKIhxYlU-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"long Covid\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/national-cancer-institute-NFvdKIhxYlU-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/national-cancer-institute-NFvdKIhxYlU-unsplash-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/national-cancer-institute-NFvdKIhxYlU-unsplash-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/national-cancer-institute-NFvdKIhxYlU-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>No. The study results are intimidating,<\/strong> but need to be taken with a grain of salt. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The statistics are drawn from electronic health records of American patients <em>who had gone to their doctor or to a hospital. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This can&#8217;t account for the many people with Covid who didn&#8217;t <\/strong>go to their doctor. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">These numbers might be quite substantial, and significantly lower the above statistics, given that America does not provide a free health system to all like we have in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/erj.ersjournals.com\/content\/early\/2021\/02\/11\/13993003.04364-2020#ref-3\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">previous American study<\/span><\/a> using data from one hospital only put the risk of depression or PTSD at only one in 10, becoming a higher risk in those who already had mental health issues before contracting Covid-19. Of course ten per cent is still substantial and of concern to scientists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What mental health issues are we talking about here? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The study mentions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">dementia<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-disorder-tips-insomnia.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">insomnia<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mood-disorders.htm\">mood disorders<\/a> (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>) <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/confused-thoughts.htm\"><span class=\"s1\"> psychotic disorders<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\">substance abuse disorders<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a> wasn&#8217;t covered by this particular study. But it&#8217;s worth noting it&#8217;s also being reported by those who lived through severe symptoms or were hospitalised. And <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32437679\/\">data put together after the SARS outbreak of 2002<\/a>, a somewhat similar situation, found that 33 per cent of survivors reported PTSD-like symptoms.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Medical symptom, or stress related?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-123351\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/usman-yousaf-Dd6St65dfYw-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"long Covid and mental health\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/usman-yousaf-Dd6St65dfYw-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/usman-yousaf-Dd6St65dfYw-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/usman-yousaf-Dd6St65dfYw-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/usman-yousaf-Dd6St65dfYw-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Medical symptoms that can form part of a serious case of Covid <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">and then create mental health symptoms include brain <\/span><span class=\"s1\">haemorrhages and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">strokes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But just because you didn&#8217;t have such a medical issue doesn&#8217;t mean<\/strong> you should overlook mental health symptoms. They can also come from the stress of a diagnosis. T<span class=\"s1\">he researchers explain that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\"> the level of mental health issues <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201creflects, at least partly, the psychological and other implications of a Covid-19 diagnosis rather than being a direct manifestation of the illness.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Long Covid, depression, and anxiety<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The NHS officially recognises depression and anxiety as symptoms on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/coronavirus-covid-19\/long-term-effects-of-coronavirus-long-covid\/\">webpage about long Covid<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>With long Covid, there can feel more to be anxious about than with other illnesses<\/strong>, as so much is still unknown, such as when (or if) symptoms will stop. <\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-the-unknown.htm\">Anything unknown<\/a> can cause fear. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fearful thinking<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0is a root cause of anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Poor sleep is also a common symptom reported by those with long Covid, and this, too, can contribute to mental health issues. The UK&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/our-work\/research\/sleep-and-mental-health-uk\">Mental Health Foundation reports<\/a> that 48 per cent of British adults with sleep problems feel it affects their mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>It&#8217;s okay to not feel yourself after Covid<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Instead of feeling<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed<\/a> for feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-doctor-about-anxiety.htm\">depressed or anxious<\/a> post Covid, remember that you are navigating a lot. It&#8217;s not surprising to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learned-helplessness.htm\"> feel overwhelmed<\/a>, given that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>having Covid can feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">out of control<\/a> and scary<\/li>\n<li>we can be reminded of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/death-anxiety-fear-of-death.htm\">our own mortality<\/a> or facing it for the first time<\/li>\n<li>sickness can increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thinking<\/a> such as thinking we are &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-always-have-bad-luck.htm\">unlucky<\/a>&#8216; or &#8216;doomed&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>or leave you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">feeling alone<\/a> if others you know didn&#8217;t suffer the way you did or understand<\/li>\n<li>it can exacerbate pre-existing mental health issues, or trigger ones we thought we were over<\/li>\n<li>our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">career<\/a> and relationships can suffer, further affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">mental wellbeing<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What should I do if I think I now have a mental health issue?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>In summary, long Covid is a vulnerable time, and the best thing we can do is<\/strong> offer ourselves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">self-compassion<\/a> and seek help and support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are many self-help tools available for mental health that do work.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bibliotherapy-read-yourself-better.htm\"> Self-help books<\/a> and online courses for anxiety and depression are worthwhile, and online forums can help you feel less alone. Tools like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\"> journaling<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> are shown to improve moods, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\"> self-care<\/a> is also helpful. It&#8217;s important to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/food-and-mood.htm\">eat well<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">exercise<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\"> learn how to say no<\/a> and create space for yourself to recover.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But if your mental health issues are affecting your<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\"> ability to cope<\/a> on a daily basis, or are in any way leading to self destructive habits or thoughts?
