Is it true? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">If so, what are they, and why are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-autism-spectrum-disorder.htm\">the signs of autism spectrum disorder<\/a> different in females? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The core autism symptoms <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Autism, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/autism-testing.htm\">diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder<\/a>, now covers a very wide variety of behavioural profiles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And each person will have their own unique way of manifesting their symptoms.<\/strong> This comes down to neurodevelopmental differences, sure. But it can also be influenced by co-occurring disorders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">personality traits<\/a>, and the environments we learn and develop in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Women and girls with autism <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>On one end we might find a child with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\">learning disabilities<\/a> who is non verbal but full of love. And on the other one with a high IQ who is not interested in having friends and identifies as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/aspergers-in-children.htm\">Aspergers<\/a>, what a psychologist might call &#8216;high functioning autism&#8217; or &#8216;mild autism&#8217;, although these term are not necessarily liked in the autism community who see them as divisive and judgemental. <em>(Note that Aspergers is now diagnosed under ASD in America, but a term still in use in the UK , such as in NICE guidelines).\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Women with autism can be a friendly<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindful-parenting.htm\">mother<\/a> struggling to manage a basic job or find a social circle, or a well-known artist who is shy, but still has a a large group of friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Regardless of the profile, there are a set of core symptoms that are shared<\/strong>, which are: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">communication<\/a> differences <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">lack of social intuition or ease <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">specific interests and often one overriding focus<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">rigidity (not flexible with your approach to life and ideas) <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">repetition (repetitive behaviours, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">habits<\/a>) <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">dislike of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">change<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And although they aren\u2019t seen as core symptoms, many on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-be-assessed-for-adult-autism.htm\">autism spectrum<\/a> also experience:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">sensory difficulties (under or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-oversensitive.htm\">oversensitive<\/a> to light, sound, colour, touch)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">issues regulating emotions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\">anger<\/a> in particular). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do women and girls share these autism symptoms?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_123911\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123911\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-123911\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2882713402_3b2ddb4efb-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"women and girls with autism\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2882713402_3b2ddb4efb-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2882713402_3b2ddb4efb.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-123911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dq090702\/2882713402\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">brokinhrt2<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Yes.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s just that the way the symptoms manifest is different.<\/strong> Which has historically meant they might miss out on being diagnosed, or be misdiagnosed. Although that is changing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28545751\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Current research from 2017<\/span><\/a> that looked at data from over fifty studies suggests the ratio of girls to boys being diagnosed with autism is around 3:1. This shows an improvement on previous research that found disparities as high as 16:1. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How autism is different in females <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Females can have their autism overlooked because they:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">have a higher chance of being quieter, which can mask symptoms <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">handle social situations a bit better<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">can come across as more anxious (leading to a misdiagnosis of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> anxiety disorder<\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The ideas around autism are also very stereotyped, which could influence diagnosis. The cliche here that is often rolled out is a male who loves trains. If a female, on the other hand, was over focussed on something like faeries, their rigid interest might be overlooked as something &#8216;girly&#8217; instead of a symptom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There are of course females who can present exactly like<\/strong> their male counterparts. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Nor does everyone falls into the neat categories of girl\/boy in the first place (<a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15374416.2016.1228462\">high rates of gender dysphoria in those with autism has been attracting researchers<\/a> for the last few years). <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why would there be a difference between the sexes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A theory that it\u2019s because of brain differences has since been mocked. And this is not least for<\/strong> the glaring sexism and huge assumptions the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12039606\/\">researcher Baron-Cohen<\/a> works from. He states, without solid scientific backup, or in any way accounting for the effects of socialisation,\u00a0 that a male brain is higher on systemising, and a female brain higher on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\">empathising<\/a>. He concludes that autism is an &#8216;extreme male brain&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Modern research, particularly with our new understanding of brain plasticity, shows that substantial differences between the female and male brain <\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">simply don\u2019t exist. They are based on a series of misinterpreted research gone wild. Or what neuroscientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2019\/feb\/24\/meet-the-neuroscientist-shattering-the-myth-of-the-gendered-brain-gina-rippon\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Gina Rippon, author of &#8216;the Gendered Brain&#8217;<\/span><\/a>, calls &#8216;neurofoolishness&#8217;, and writer and psychologist Cordelia Fine &#8216;neurosexism&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>The power of socialisation when it comes to girls with autism<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The most logical reason for differences is currently thought to be socialisation.<\/strong> Despite recent strides in understanding gender and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity<\/a>, Western society still places heavy expectations on us all about what is \u2018feminine\u2019 and what is \u2018masculine\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-123930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexandr-podvalny-TciuHvwoK0k-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"autistic girls\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexandr-podvalny-TciuHvwoK0k-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexandr-podvalny-TciuHvwoK0k-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexandr-podvalny-TciuHvwoK0k-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexandr-podvalny-TciuHvwoK0k-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexandr-podvalny-TciuHvwoK0k-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Which leads to groups of girls socialising differently than groups of boys.<\/strong> In fact socialising more. Girls are more likely to be taught to seek approval through others, including peers. Boys are more likely to be taught to seek approval through action.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">So girls with autism might have better social skills as the life of a girl presents more opportunity for socialising than the life of a boy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And girls can be treated differently<\/strong> by teachers and parents. A boisterous boy, for example, might be pandered to for being a &#8216;ball of energy&#8217; or &#8216;a real boy&#8217;. A boisterous girl can be told to &#8216;calm down&#8217; or &#8216;stop being hysterical&#8217;. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Girls are still be taught to hide their personalities more, which could explain why more autistic females than males are good at &#8216;masking&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The long reaching arm of unbalanced research <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Autism was first recognised as a neurodevelopmental disorder in the 1940s. But the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29667863\/\">first major study <\/a>looked at four times as many boys than girls. And the trend seemed to continue. What if the first study had made an effort to include an equal number of girls and boys? We&#8217;ll never know. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>On a good note, several decades later in the<\/strong> 1980s, the same researcher pointed out something important. He made it clear that no matter how developed the diagnostic is, we should never lose sight of the fact that each child is unique. Let&#8217;s hope he meant girls, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Mother of a girl with an autism?
