Darcy<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When it comes to psychotherapists, counselling psychologists and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>, we can believe they have some magical wand. Where does the truth lie?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Psychologists and depression <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Turns out that, much as we want therapists to be super humans<\/strong> who can save us from ourselves? They are (gasp!) just people like the rest of us. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-therapists.htm\">psychotherapists and counselling psychologists<\/a> can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-depressed.htm\">depressed<\/a>. And it can actually benefit you as the client, when you look at the big picture and know more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/first-therapy-session-what-happens.htm\">the way therapy works<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2015 surve<\/span>y of British psychotherapists and psychologists found that 46 per cent of those who responded had experienced depressed moods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is depression, anyway?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Depression means that our low moods and inability to feel ourselves or<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">cope well<\/a> has gone on for a month or more and is consistent or worsening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some depression seems easier to explain.\u00a0 This includes<\/strong> postpartum depression, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/trauma-counselling-london.htm\">depression following trauma<\/a> or injury, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/bereavement-counselling-london.htm\">depression following a bereavement<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">difficult life change<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\">redundancy<\/a>. Other forms of depression seem to hit out of nowhere, and can be connected to things like<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">\u00a0childhood trauma<\/a> we never dealt with.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">[Wondering if you are depressed yourself? It\u2019s pretty hard to get through<\/strong> without at least<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\"> a few bouts of depression<\/a>, whether we want to call it grief, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\">midlife crisis<\/a>, or just an extended \u2018low period\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The positive side of psychologists and depression <\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">When a talk therapist has had depression they can properly understand exactly what you are going through. They know what it\u2019s like to try to function when you are feeling really low. They also know how hard it can feel to put into action tools and tactics that work. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-123986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-7468236-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"psychotherapists and depression\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-7468236-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-7468236-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-7468236-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-rodnae-productions-7468236.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>But they will also know what it feels like when those tools and tactics and <\/strong>the process of therapy itself actually work. They are inspired to help you because they know there is a way forward. A<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ll psychotherapists and most counselling psychologists in the UK have done therapy themselves, as part of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/become-counselling-psychologist.htm\">training and accreditation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The reason why people become therapists in the first place?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In fact a major reason many people decide to be a talk therapist in the first place is<\/strong> because they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/successfully-overcoming-depression-case-study.htm\">experienced depression<\/a> or other mental health issues. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Their own healing journey is the driving factor to their desire to help other people. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is it my fault? Am I making my therapist depressed?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>No. This would be a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">cognitive distortion<\/a>, what is known as \u2018personalisation\u2019. This is where you make everything about you despite any clear evidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A therapist has spent hundreds of hours training in having empathy without attachment<\/strong>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> They see your struggles. But they also know that you have the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\"> inner resources<\/a> to deal with them. They are not into sympathy, empathy&#8217;s <\/span>negative cousin (learn the difference in our article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\">sympathy vs empathy<\/a>). <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The therapy profession and burnout<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">If a therapist gets depressed, it\u2019s from their own life and issues, not yours. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And if their depression is related to their job it is often less about clients and more about typical<\/strong> workplace issues. This looks like being overworked, and losing sight of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\">work-life balance<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/private-mental-health-care-or-nhs-counselling.htm\">The <\/a>NHS is hardly known for their organisation and useful allocation of funds. Widespread vacancies also meant they were taking on an extra workload. 30 per cent reported having to work more hours than they were contracted for, and more than 40 per cent agreed they felt exhausted at the end of each day.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But if my psychologist is depressed can they really help me? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s highly likely that you have already done many sessions with a therapist who was having a bad day or was even<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\">depressed<\/a>. Therapists have all the tools available to function <i>despite <\/i>their moods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>If a talk therapist experiences depression they are also likely to reach for<\/strong> support from their peers, supervisor, or their own therapist. Yes, many therapists also attend therapy themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My therapist is not themselves lately and I don\u2019t know what to do<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A good therapist knows their limits. If they are truly emotionally overwhelmed, they will find a replacement therapist for their client list, or reschedule appointments. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Of course, like in any profession, some therapists lose their way and can <\/strong>fall short of ethics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-makes-a-good-therapist.htm\">good practice<\/a>. If you are finding your therapist does not seem present in sessions, speak up. Let your therapist know what you are experiencing, and give them a chance to respond. If it&#8217;s decided that they are no longer the right therapist for you, then this gives them a chance to refer you on to someone who is better suited to help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If your therapist in any way breaks a professional boundary?
