Distressed? You could be dealing with separation anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Yes, the term is more often used in the context of children or dogs. But this is about to change. Adults can suffer similar, and it is about to become a diagnosable disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is separation anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some people call it \u2018being clingy\u2019. Others refer to it as <\/strong>\u2018over-dependence&#8217;. Whatever name you give it, separation anxiety commonly manifests as feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worried, anxious<\/a>, or panicked when apart from a particular person, like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-help-a-friend-with-anxiety.htm\">friend<\/a> or spouse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">It can also lead to extreme<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jealousy-head.htm\"> jealousy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">unhealthy relationship patterns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">difficulty sleeping<\/a> when apart, and feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">unable to cope<\/a> when that person is not around.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>These feelings might seem amplified at the moment if<\/strong> you\u2019ve spent an increased amount of time at home with your kids, partner, pets or roommates due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-connection-coronavirus.htm\">pandemic<\/a>. And now you are suddenly thrust back into the routine of normal life.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">What causes clingy feelings?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-124150 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/black-guy-350x400.png\" alt=\"separation anxiety\" width=\"350\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/black-guy-350x400.png 350w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/black-guy-500x571.png 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/black-guy.png 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Not everyone experiences feelings of anxiety when they\u2019re left alone, so why are some people seemingly predisposed to it?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Fear of being alone.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>While some people relish time by themselves, others don\u2019t like to be left<\/strong> alone with their thoughts. The company of other people can be a welcome distraction to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">uncomfortable emotions<\/a> that they are unsure how to deal with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Autophobia is an extreme form of this. People with this phobia are fearful of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ask-for-help.htm\">being alone<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">lonely<\/a>, and feel they need to be in the company of others to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">feel safe<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>However, many people don\u2019t fear being alone until they are going through something difficult.<\/strong> You might find it easier to cope when in the company of those closest to you. If you\u2019re feeling especially clingy right now, it could be because you simply need that extra support.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Anxious attachment.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Always felt fearful about time spent apart? It could be down to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-styles.htm\">attachment style<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">Attachment Theory<\/a> was first put forward by psychologist John Bowlby, who proposed that infants needed to form a close emotional bond with a caregiver in order to form healthy relationships in adulthood. Others added to the theory, and now the four attachment styles that tend to be referred to are s<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ecure, anxious-avoidant, anxious-ambivalent, and fearful-avoidant.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">&#8216;Anxious attachment<\/a>&#8216; typically leads to having a hard time feeling secure in relationships.\u00a0 It can mean you have issues with over-dependency,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jealousy-head.htm\"> jealousy<\/a>, and clinginess.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Separation anxiety disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The next version of the<\/strong> World Health Organisation&#8217;s diagnostic health manual,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpsych.ac.uk\/docs\/default-source\/events\/development\/icd-11\/calc-d-1.pdf?sfvrsn=3648e8c6_4\"> the ICD-11, will now classify separation anxiety as a disorder<\/a> that is not just for children but also for adults.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So if your apprehension about being separated from the people you<\/strong> are emotionally attached to affects your ability to cope and thrive, you can now be diagnosed with this disorder.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Separation anxiety can also be a symptom of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">borderline personality disorder (BPD)<\/a>, a mental health condition characterised by unstable moods and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-critical-signs.htm\">poor self-image<\/a>. It can be common for people with BPD to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-mean-to-my-partner.htm\">lash out<\/a> when they experience separation anxiety. This can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stop-self-sabotaging-behaviour.htm\">sabotage their relationships<\/a> at a time when what they really want is closeness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">How To Manage Separation Anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/viktor-talashuk-pq8YByqaheY-unsplash-400x306.jpg\" alt=\"separation anxiety\" width=\"400\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/viktor-talashuk-pq8YByqaheY-unsplash-400x306.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/viktor-talashuk-pq8YByqaheY-unsplash-500x383.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/viktor-talashuk-pq8YByqaheY-unsplash-768x588.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/viktor-talashuk-pq8YByqaheY-unsplash-1536x1176.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/viktor-talashuk-pq8YByqaheY-unsplash-2048x1568.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>So, what should you do if you\u2019re struggling with separation anxiety, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">feeling fearful<\/a> of being alone?<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Try short bursts apart.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exposure-therapy-for-anxiety.htm\">Exposure therapy<\/a> suggests that when you\u2019re exposed to the thing you fear most, but within a safe setting? And for a short time frame?\u00a0 Over time, this may help you to overcome your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\"> distress<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You don\u2019t need to be apart from your person for hours at a time. Instead, you could start<\/strong>\u00a0being by yourself for a short period. Nip out for some fresh air by yourself, do the grocery shopping on your own, or even spend time in another room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If actually being apart from your loved one feels too daunting<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\">visualisation techniques<\/a> may help. You could imagine being separated for a few moments and write down how you feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Eventually, you may build up the courage to spend some time apart. You may even learn to enjoy your own company.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>2. Question the validity of your thoughts.<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Not every thought we have is true. It can be helpful to monitor your thoughts before<\/strong> feelings of panic and distress come on. You could try asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">helpful questions<\/a> to get to the root of the problem, such as \u2018what am I feeling?\u2019. &#8216;Is this negative thought I&#8217;m having actually true?&#8217;.\u00a0 \u2018What am I fearful of?.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A diary may help you record your thoughts and identify patterns.\u00a0<\/strong> A<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30712734\/\"> <span class=\"s3\">2018 observational study<\/span><\/a>\u00a0found that this kind of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\"> expressive writing<\/a> can improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilience<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Turn to relaxation techniques.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Popular relaxation methods can calm an anxious mind \u2013 and there are many you can try. Some people find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">meditation<\/a> effective and an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/meditation-in-depth\"> <span class=\"s3\">in-depth scientific review<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0indicates that it can moderately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-social-anxiety.htm\">improve anxiety<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other ways to relax and find calm include yoga,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">progressive muscle relaxation<\/a>, and deep breathing exercises. Of course, the most effective relaxation technique is the one that works best for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\">Can therapy help my separation anxiety?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>If separation anxiety stems from issues in your childhood, <\/strong>talking to a therapist may help. A qualified therapist can support you in identifying the root cause of your anxiety and provide tools that will help you manage it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-counselling-case-study.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> can be a good choice. A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3263389\/\"> <span class=\"s3\">2011 scientific review<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 concluded that it\u2019s an effective treatment for a wide range of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> anxiety disorders<\/a>.
