That helps you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">improve your relationships<\/a> and social skills? But confused to see the terms \u2018interpersonal therapy\u2019 and also \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dynamic-interpersonal-therapy.htm\">dynamic interpersonal therapy<\/a>&#8216; (DIT)?<\/p>\n<p><em>Are they or aren\u2019t they the same thing?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What is interpersonal therapy?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u2018Interpersonal therapy&#8217;, or &#8216;IPT&#8217;,<\/strong> believes that by looking at and improving your ways of relating and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-connection-coronavirus.htm\">connecting with others<\/a>, you can improve your moods and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">It especially looks to see if a recent and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"> difficult life event<\/a> has disrupted the ways you relate and connect, believing that life events affect our moods and relating, and vice versa.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is a short-term therapy that focuses on the issues you are dealing with here and now. So it helps you troubleshoot current relationships,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\"> improve your communication skills<\/a>, and learn how to ask for and sustain social support.<\/p>\n<h2>What is dynamic interpersonal therapy?<\/h2>\n<p>Dynamic interpersonal therapy, or &#8216;DIT&#8217;, is again a short-term therapy that believes how we relate directly affects our wellbeing, for better or worse. In fact all DIT practitioners are psychodynamic therapists.<\/p>\n<p>And psychodynamic psychotherapy is based on the idea that the solution to our present issues lies in the past.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">So with dynamic interpersonal therapy, you will be looking at the ways you learned to relate as a child. How are they causing you stress in current relationships?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>IPT vs DIT &#8211; 5 key differences<\/h2>\n<p><strong>So in summary, no! These two types of therapy are not the same thing. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>So then to clarify, how are they different?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. The school of thought they arise from.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, interpersonal therapy (IPT) is influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychodynamic-approach.htm\">psychodynamic therapy<\/a>. But it&#8217;s even more influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\"> attachment theory<\/a>. It is not seen as falling under the psychodynamic umbrella but is seen as a \u2018psychosocial\u2019 therapy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Dynamic interpersonal therapy, on the other hand, is actually a branch of psychodynamic therapy. You might even see it just referred to as &#8216;short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Where they look for the root of your issues.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>They both believe the root of mood issues is in the ways we relate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IPT particularly looks at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\"><em>recent life challenges<\/em> <\/a>that have affected your relating.\u00a0This could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a>, significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\">clash with another person<\/a>, the beginning or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">end of a relationship<\/a>, an event that has left you isolated and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/tired-of-being-alone.htm\">alone<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/long-covid-mental-health.htm\">illness<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/moving-abroad-cause-depression.htm\">moving abroad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DIT, on the other hand, looks to the past and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-schema-psychology.htm\">patterns of relating <\/a>you learned as a child.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Research and recommendations.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some therapies become the subject of more research than others, often as they are cost efficient for governments. This sees them labelled as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-evidence-based-therapy-practise-and-treatment.htm\">evidence based<\/a>\u2019. It\u2019s not to say other therapies aren\u2019t as effective, it just means they are less proven.<\/p>\n<p>IPT is currently more evidence based than DIT. But DIT has had more attention of late and now both IPT and DIT are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg123\/chapter\/1-Guidance\">recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. What issues they can help with.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Again, they both are recommended for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>. Both are used to help<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\"> anxiety<\/a> as well. And naturally they both help with relationships and loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>Interpersonal therapy is also used to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\">substance abuse disorders<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\"> bipolar disorder<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-eating-disorders.htm\">eating disorders<\/a>. It can also help with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">life changes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">grief<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\">midlife crisis<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">PTSD<\/a> from a difficult experience.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Time duration.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Both of these therapies are time-limited and \u2018brief\u2019 over long-term. IPT usually lasts 12 to 16 weeks but can also be offered in as few as 8 sessions. DIT is generally done in a full 16 sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Note that interpersonal therapy can sometimes be used as a &#8216;maintenance therapy&#8217; for depression. So you might, say, over the course of a few years go see an IPT therapist every now and then to check in on how you are coping post depression.<\/p>\n<h2>So which therapy is for me?<\/h2>\n<p>Did you have a tough childhood and learn poor relating skills from parents, or never feel loved? <em>DIT can help you work through these past relationship problems.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Did you recently experience a substantial life change such as a bereavement, breakup, new job, illness, or big move? <em>Interpersonal therapy focuses on how life changes affect us.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you hate talking about the past?<\/strong> <em>Even if you did have a tough childhood, if you find talking about your past overly upsetting?
