But are we missing out on the benefits of hobbies for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>In a nutshell, yes. If you tell yourself you have no time for hobbies, you are overlooking a wealth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing benefits<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">The benefits of hobbies for mental health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So when it comes to hobbies and mental health, what are the benefits we can expect?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Bolster self-esteem.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The more regularly we focus on a particular activity, the better we tend to get at it. And that\u2019s why having a regular hobby can be so good for building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\">feelings of confidence<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">self-worth<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Even if you feel as though you\u2019re failing in other areas of your life, an activity that you can master during your down time can provide a sense of accomplishment. So yes, you can knit or paddle board your way to<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/category\/self-esteem\"> self-esteem<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Reduce stress.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">You might think adding a hobby to your weekly to-do list would add more stress to your life, but research shows it\u2019s quite the opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Studies have shown that partaking in enjoyable leisure activities improves the body\u2019s psychological and physiological functioning. In particular,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2863117\/\"> <span class=\"s3\">research from 2009<\/span><\/a> discovered hobbies could lower blood pressure and levels of the stress hormone cortisol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Prompt \u2018flow\u2019.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Some hobbies can induce a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindful state<\/a> of enjoyment known as \u2018flow\u2019 . Foster new friendships.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Add to all that, hobbies are often a social activity and may allow you to hang out with like-minded people, prompting feelings of bonding and connection that are crucial to our happiness and wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The best hobbies for mental health\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The best hobbies for mental health depend on you. It won&#8217;t necessarily be what works for your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\"> best friend<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a>, for example. It has to be what makes you feel good. Here are some tips to nail down what that is.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Decide what you really need.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Perhaps you\u2019re craving creativity and you really want to funnel your talents into arts and crafts. Maybe you\u2019re looking for a challenge, something that pushes you outside of your comfort zone and gives you a sense of achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Or perhaps it\u2019s the social aspect that has you hankering after a hobby; you want to do something different with your day, sure, but what you really want is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">make some new friends<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Have a think and decide what need you\u2019d like a hobby to fill for you. For extra clarity, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">using a journal<\/a> and getting your thoughts out on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Look to your childhood.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Did you have a hobby in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood<\/a> that you just couldn\u2019t live without? Like a dance class you went to, or a club you joined? Is there anything stopping you from taking that hobby up again as an adult?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">The activities you enjoyed as a child felt fun for a reason. They sparked an interest in you, helped you discover new talents and skills, and aided your development.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Re-igniting that passion in adulthood could help you rediscover latent talents, spark fond memories, and even help you reconnect to your childhood self. Think about what you already enjoy.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">You might love to fill your spare time with gardening, feel most at ease when baking cakes at the weekend, or take pride in hitting personal bests when out for a run. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Take a \u2018zoomed out\u2019 view of your current lifestyle when it comes to hobbies and mental health. Which activities bring you the most joy?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">You could turn these occasional activities into regular hobbies by signing up for an evening class, forming your own club with friends, or joining a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">sports team<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Make it trial and error when it comes to hobbies and mental health.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">You might not find the right hobby for you right away, but that can be part of the fun. Don\u2019t be afraid to try different hobbies on for size, paying attention to how each one makes you feel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Some good questions to ask yourself might include:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">How do I feel during and immediately after this activity?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Does it drain or replenish my energy?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Is it something I actively look forward to every week?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Does it give me a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/social-pressure.htm\">feeling of accomplishment<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Give yourself a little time to try each hobby before you decide whether you want to make it a regular pursuit or try your hand at something different. There\u2019s no shame in quitting if a hobby doesn\u2019t feel right.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Make time for hobbies and mental health, make time for you<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A hobby will only stick if you regularly carve out time for it and make it a priority.<\/strong> That little slice of me time, whether it\u2019s spent arranging flowers, going to a cooking class, or playing a team sport, can be just as important \u2013 if not more so \u2013 than the list of commitments and demands that make up your week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So, consider dedicating some of your free time to a new hobby that lights you up,<\/strong> whether it\u2019s joining your local book club or picking up a paintbrush after a long hiatus.
