But also perhaps give you a feeling of being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">worn out<\/a> and depleted, or even<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\"> a bit low<\/a>? It&#8217;s likely you\u2019re feeling the brunt of digital fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">What is digital fatigue?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>The term is used to describe a<\/strong> state of mental exhaustion brought on by the excessive use of digital devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Also referred to as \u2018screen burnout\u2019, it&#8217;s not a <\/strong>new discovery. But it&#8217;s been bought to the forefront since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">Covid-19 pandemic,<\/a> From working from home, to staying entertained and connected with others, digital technology has never been so popular (&#8216;Zoom fatigue&#8217;, anyone?).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">According to a 2020 <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/about-ofcom\/latest\/media\/media-releases\/2020\/uk-internet-use-surges\"><span class=\"s2\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">report by Ofcom<\/span>,<\/span><\/a> UK adults are now spending more than a quarter of each day online, a record high.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Common symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Considering digital fatigue is another form of<\/strong> mental exhaustion, the symptoms are generally similar. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Signs include the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">low energy levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">lack of motivation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">difficulty concentrating<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">feeling anxious<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-overwhelmed-with-life.htm\">overwhelmed<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">low mood<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">sore, watery, or irritated eyes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">headaches or migraines\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">difficulty falling asleep<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li5\"><span class=\"s1\">sensitivity to light\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">pain and discomfort in neck<\/a>, shoulders and back.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Why does digital fatigue happen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/unsplash-ULgCbKd9OO4-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"digital fatigue\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/unsplash-ULgCbKd9OO4-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/unsplash-ULgCbKd9OO4-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/unsplash-ULgCbKd9OO4-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/unsplash-ULgCbKd9OO4-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/unsplash-ULgCbKd9OO4-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>So then why are we all so numb and tired after a day of working from home?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Poor lighting.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The false light of our computers, the infamous<\/strong> &#8216;blue light&#8217;, is a contributing factor. It affects our sleep cycles.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/blue-light-has-a-dark-side\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Harvard Health explains<\/span><\/a> that blue wavelengths boost attention. Useful in the day, but contributing to poor sleep if we are exposing ourselves at night.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And poor sleep is directly connected to low moods. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3181883\/\">Research estimates<\/a> that about three quarters of those who are depressed also suffer insomnia.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Elevated work-based pressures.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Endless Zoom meetings are exhausting.\u00a0 They lack the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\"> social connection<\/a> and body language cues of in-person gatherings. They can also feel more stressful when others have a close up of your face, and can see your subtle reactions more than if, say, they were across a table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Needing to be more focussed.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Digital tools like Zoom also generally require more attention and focus than face-face interactions. This is because we are forced to consciously monitor non-verbal cues and make direct eye-contact when speaking. No wonder it\u2019s exhausting and we are left with digital fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">4. Going into FOMO.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldsocpsychiatry.org\/article.asp?issn=2667-1077;year=2020;volume=2;issue=2;spage=171;epage=172;aulast=Sharma\">An interesting study published in the Journal of World Social Psychiatry<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> looked at how our excessive technology use during Covid-19 affected stress. What it found was that working from home, without the monitoring and rules of working in an office, meant most of us had social media and news constantly going in the background.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And this &#8216;background listening&#8217;, where we constantly receive bits of information, leads to a sort of fear of missing out (FOMO). Meaning we feel obliged to be constantly available to all this incoming info. Which led to feelings of stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">5. There are no stopping cues.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>According to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/adam_alter_why_our_screens_make_us_less_happy\/transcript?language=en\">a Ted talk by psychologist Adam Alter<\/a>, the reason why our digital usage has increased is because there\u2019s no stopping cues. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">These are signals that give the gentle nudge to move on to something different. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For example, with books, when you reach the end of a chapter, it prompts you to consider whether<\/strong> you want to continue reading. These cues allow us some breathing space, preventing us from exhausting ourselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>On the other hand, digital tools are a bottomless pit,<\/strong> making us want to keep on consuming and working for hours at a time. It all stems down to balance, allowing you to adjust your lifestyle in a way that suits you best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Take regular breaks to stop digital fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Although most digital tools lack stopping cues, incorporating a gentle reminder to take regular breaks is a great way to make up for it. This could look like setting an alarm, or sticking to a regular schedule of breaks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You might want to incorporate some<\/strong> stretching, or a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-de-stress-mindfulness-relaxation-break.htm\"> mini mindfulness break<\/a>, which helps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\">lower stress<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Be mindful.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Speaking of mindfulness. Sometimes, we use our devices out of<\/strong> habit, or as a way of distracting ourselves. Being mindful helps you identify these triggers and then question what other alternatives might be healthier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Of course, it takes time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">cultivate a mindful awareness<\/a>. On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">a daily mindfulness practise of even only ten minutes has been found to lower anxiety<\/a> and improve concentration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Dedicate time for offline activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Before you tuck into a new Netflix series after a long day working behind a screen, it\u2019s worth<\/strong> considering another way to unwind that is easy on the eye and doesn&#8217;t simply add to digital fatigue. And ideally something that leads to better mobility, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercising<\/a>, to improve posture and alleviate the stiffness, aches and pains a life in front of a screen brings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have kids, consider spending time together with all of you off screen.<\/strong> You set the example when it comes to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/children-and-technology.htm\"> kids and technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">5. Set boundaries.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Just because digital technology is a part of our everyday lives, doesn\u2019t mean our usage is non-negotiable. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">Setting boundaries<\/a> is vital when it comes to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\"> balancing your work with the rest of you life<\/a>. It enables you to prioritise what you value most, easing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">the stress of decision making<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Is the truth that it&#8217;s not just your screen but your job that has you depressed?
