Without an overwhelming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">sense of guilt<\/a>? Or the ongoing urge to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/time-management-tips.htm\">be productive<\/a> in some way? If your answer is no, you\u2019re not alone. Many of us don\u2019t know how to relax.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What Is Relaxation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Relaxation is more than just lounging on the sofa, <\/strong>unwinding for the day. It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rest-reward-system.htm\">restful state in which you are free from tension<\/a> in the mind and body. This is often associated with feeling a sense of peace and calm. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Relaxation is achieved by either doing soothing activities, or using relaxation techniques.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The &#8216;relaxation response&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And relaxation techniques might have the upper hand here, <\/strong>as they engage what\u2019s known as the \u2018relaxation response.\u2019 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Coined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nBCsFuoFRp8\">Dr. Herbert Bensen<\/a>, the term is used to describe:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cA physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress and is opposite of the fight-or-flight response.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Fight, flight, or freeze<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">When we experience a situation that our brain perceives as a threat, our body triggers our \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight or flight<\/a>\u2019 response. This response activates the sympathetic nervous system, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-125274\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-claudia-barbosa-2023128-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"how to relax\" width=\"385\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-claudia-barbosa-2023128-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-claudia-barbosa-2023128-500x332.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-claudia-barbosa-2023128-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-claudia-barbosa-2023128-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-claudia-barbosa-2023128.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/>and results in things like raised cortisol, leaving us &#8216;buzzy&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">What people forget is that the autonomic nervous system has two sides. While one side <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\">causes stress<\/a>, the other allows you to relax.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>How to relax?\u00a0 Get &#8216;parasympathetic&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When you engage your relaxation response, it activates this other side<\/strong>, the <em>parasympathetic<\/em> nervous system. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span class=\"s1\">This counteracts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\">the effects of stress<\/a> as it releases hormones that <\/span><span class=\"s1\">lower heart rate and blood pressure, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">relax the muscles, and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">allow your breath to return to normal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">How do I engage \u2018the Relaxation Response\u2019?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Not by watching TV! While it may be an enjoyable activity and does relieve<\/strong> some stress, it doesn\u2019t put you in a state of pure relaxation. It could also serve as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">temporary distraction<\/a>, with the underlying stress still affecting your body. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Engaging the relaxation response, again, involves activating the parasympathetic nervous system, not just temporarily &#8216;checking out&#8217;.\u00a0 Try these methods instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Breath work.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=acUZdGd_3Dg\">Breathing exercises<\/a> are the foundation for many relaxation techniques.<\/strong> Not surprising, given that <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6137615\/\"><span class=\"s2\">research<\/span><\/a> directly links breath work to that sought after parasympathetic activity that leaves us relaxed. And note that deep, measured breathing is free, easy, and can be done literally anywhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Visualisation.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\">visualisation<\/a> you can use your thoughts and imagination to picture yourself in more serene environment, such as at the beach by the calming sea. It works to soothe the mind and body by making you feel as you\u2019re really there. You can do this almost anywhere, giving you an instant sense of peace. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. With progressive muscle relaxation, you learn to identify which parts of the body are most affected by stress and stop things getting out of control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Mindfulness.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Another extremely beneficial way to induce deep relaxation is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>, a process of bringing our awareness to what\u2019s happening in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">the present moment<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/330693418_Mindfulness_Training_and_Physical_Health_Mechanisms_and_Outcomes\"><span class=\"s2\">research<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness training<\/a> influences two different stress pathways in the brain, altering our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">attention<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-regulation-skills.htm\">emotional control<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What if I still struggle to relax?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>How to relax? Give it time. <\/strong>Like any skill, relaxation can take time to master. The more you practice, the easier it will become to relax on a regular basis. But also consider the following.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Stop taking your self-worth from productivity.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Ever feel like you should be doing something when resting?<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">While relaxation doesn\u2019t have to take up much of our time, many feel pressured to be productive all throughout the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcr\/article\/44\/1\/118\/2736404#120078875\">Research indicates<\/a> <strong>that a busy lifestyle, rather than a leisurely one, has become a status symbol.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\">This creates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\">limiting belief<\/a> that you don\u2019t have the time to relax. So, when you finally attempt to, you end up feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilty<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Learn to question this belief. Is productivity really the only way you move forward in life? Is it really what has made you who you are?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Accept you might have &#8216;relaxation-induced anxiety&#8217;.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6134846\/\">study<\/a> published in the Journal of Affective Disorders<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">reveals that some of us become anxious as a result of being relaxed. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This is known as \u2018relaxation-induced anxiety\u2019, <\/strong>which often affects those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety disorders<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">According to Michelle Newman, professor of psychology, people with anxiety may actively resist relaxation to prevent a larger jump in anxiety in the event that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">something bad may happen<\/a> when they are relaxed.<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> Of course those &#8216;bad things&#8217; often don&#8217;t happen. If this is you, the next tip can be helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Reframe your thoughts.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So, if you find yourself questioning what you \u2018should\u2019 be doing instead,<\/strong> or feeling guilty about relaxing, or like it might leave you in danger? It can help to notice your thinking and question how true it really is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> is especially helpful here. It uses techniques that can help you recognise and confront unhealthy thought patterns, restoring more logical, useful, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">balanced thinking<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">4. How to relax? By using consistency.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Like with many things in life, we get better at things we consistently make time for and practice. Don\u2019t wait to become anxious to practice relaxation techniques, it&#8217;s better to carve out time daily instead. This makes anxiety attacks far less likely to happen in the first place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">5. Find what works for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What may work for one person may not work for you. Explore until you find the relaxation technique that suit you best. But note that some techniques like breath work and visualisation take time and commitment to get the hang of.
