This is <\/span><span class=\"s1\">often based on the misconception that the symptoms of mental health are a result of having a \u201cweak character.\u201d In turn, this can compound feelings of shame and embarrassment.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How To Support Men\u2019s Mental Health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So how can you support the men in your life with their mental health struggles?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Spot the signs.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">While depression can often come across as being sad and withdrawn in women, it can sometimes have different symptoms in men, such as aggression and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\">outbursts of anger<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Not certain if someone is or isn&#8217;t going through mental health challenges? Look for changes<\/strong> to their personal base line. Is their mood, energy, and general demeanour different lately? Are they having<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\"> difficulty sleeping<\/a> or finding it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-case-study.htm\">hard to concentrate<\/a>? Do they seem to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">indulging in bad habits<\/a> more than usual? Have they recently become a Dad? (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postpartum-depression-in-men.htm\">Male postpartum depression<\/a> is a thing).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">2. If, that is, he&#8217;s the sort who likes to talk about how he is. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s important to remember men don&#8217;t necessarily<\/strong> communicate the same way as women (of course nor are all women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-skills-attract-love.htm\">communicative<\/a>, this can be a gender stereotype).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When engaging in conversation there&#8217;s nothing wrong with talking about everyday things. The fact you are connecting and being there at all is more important than pushing him to tell you how he feels, particularly if he doesn&#8217;t want to. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If you do talk &#8216;feelings&#8217;, stick to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">&#8216;how&#8217; and &#8216;what&#8217; questions<\/a>, as why questions send the best of us into<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-critical-signs.htm\"> self-critical<\/a> rabbit holes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When in doubt, you can always just ask.<\/strong> <span class=\"s1\">\u00a0&#8220;I sense things are difficult right now. Is that right? Did you want to talk about it?&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Listen over giving any well-meaning advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Be sure not to make<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\">assumptions<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-judging-others.htm\"> judgements<\/a>. You are not in their mind, you can&#8217;t know what they are going through. As for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/giving-advice-in-relationships.htm\">advice<\/a>, it&#8217;s only useful if it&#8217;s directly asked for. When someone is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\"> anxious or depressed<\/a>, they are more vulnerable to criticism than usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Instead, just listen. A friend coming along and encouraging us can be helpful.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">5. Share useful information for male mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It may help to share details of a time when you struggled with your own mental health.<\/strong> This can be a reminder that it\u2019s okay not to be okay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If a person is open and seems willing to seek support,<\/strong> it can be helpful to gather some information on their behalf. For example, you could find information on talk therapies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-counselling-case-study.htm\">CBT<\/a>, locate support groups in the local community, or gather articles that may help your friend or loved one understand their condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">There are also special free, confidential helplines just for men and for young people here in the UK, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-helpline.htm\">find a list here<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The key is to make suggestions rather than offering advice.<\/strong> For example, asking, &#8220;Are you aware of talk therapy?&#8221;, is much better than suggesting, &#8220;What you need is therapy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">6. Respect their boundaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">You may have heard the phrase \u201cYou can take a horse to water but you can\u2019t make it drink\u201d. This is true of supporting someone you love and care about. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">You can offer your support in many ways, but ultimately, it\u2019s up to the person in question whether or not they want to seek help for themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">7. Consider support yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Partner of someone you are convinced needs mental health help?<\/strong> It can be easy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\">project<\/a> all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">issues in a relationship<\/a> onto one person, but usually both parties have their own things to deal with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, the very fact that you were attracted to<\/strong> a relationship with someone who is sad or angry in the first place would relate to your own unresolved childhood issues. This is particularly true if you are often putting yourself into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">the &#8216;helper&#8217; role<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So if you actually could benefit from<\/strong> seeing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">psychotherapist or counsellor yourself<\/a>, remember that sometimes the best way to show what works is to lead by example.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Need support yourself?
