It&#8217;s thought to be a combination of changing hormones and a predisposition to mental health issues. Other factors can raise your risk, including an at risk pregnancy, a traumatic birth, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\"> poor lifestyle choices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>But there are other challenges postpartum that we do clearly know can affect your moods. Recognising these potential mood destroyers in advance can help.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Sleep deprivation.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>In a still not fully understood, chicken or egg sort of situation<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">poor sleep is directly connected to mental health issues<\/a>. This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-doctor-about-anxiety.htm\">depression and anxiety<\/a>, as well as other problems like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">bipolar disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you already easily fall prey to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-disorder-tips-insomnia.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>, and sleep problems then affect your mood? Note that the pattern of <span class=\"s2\">nighttime wakings a newborn involves, called &#8216;partial sleep deprivation&#8217;,\u00a0 is particularly damaging. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><span class=\"s2\">According to a <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sleep\/article\/19\/4\/318\/2749842\">US study<\/a>, &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u201cpartial sleep deprivation has a more profound effect on functioning than either long-term or short-term sleep deprivation.\u201d<span class=\"s6\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Lack of control over your body and your life.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s3\"><strong>The body that grown a human (or several) for nine months<\/strong> is still not yours after birth. Your<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> body will be food (if you decide to breastfeed), a couch to nap on, a toy to pull, mouth and bite, and your baby\u2019s comfort zone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>Also, the life you lived before went through significant changes<\/strong>. You can feel you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">don\u2019t have control over anything<\/a>, because the baby\u2019s needs overwrite a lot of things. Part of postpartum care can be about acceptance of what is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p14\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Fathers can find themselves receiving less attention, and mothers might resent that fathers get to go on with their lives with fewer changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>And then there is extended family. Yes, their support can be<\/strong> very valuable in the postnatal period. But sometimes their unsolicited parenting advice can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\">cause conflict<\/a> or stress, even though they mean well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #800080;\">4. The breastfeeding debate.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">A 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1751485119301679\"><span class=\"s7\">study<\/span><\/a> <strong>examines the mental health effects of decisions related to breastfeeding. They emphasise the responsibility of<\/strong> health care providers to support mothers through this time, not just with practical lactation issues, but emotionally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p16\"><span class=\"s5\"><strong>And then there is the myth about breastfeeding being a natural easy thing,<\/strong> like a duck taking to water. It isn&#8217;t. Some women need lactation specialists as part of their postpartum care, or find breastfeeding is not possible. As the study points out&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p16\"><span class=\"s5\" style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8211;women \u201cmay also need to educate family members to be realistic and supportive of women who may have difficulties with exclusive breastfeeding. Or who decide to stop breastfeeding early, whether due to physical, emotional, or practical issues\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p18\"><span class=\"s4\">Postpartum psychosis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>It is also very important to be aware of the risk o<\/strong>f <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-postpartum-psychosis.htm\">postpartum psychosis<\/a>. A condition that gets less press than the baby blues, it can be a very dangerous situation for both baby and mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><strong><span class=\"s8\">Postpartum psychosis<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s2\"><strong> develops within six weeks of childbirth, and symptoms can consist of:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/flashback-vs-hallucination-vs-delusion.htm\"><span class=\"s2\">hallucinations and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">delusions<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mania.htm\">manic mood<\/a> or rapid shifts from high to low moods<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"> restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-paranoia.htm\">acting suspicious<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fearful<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">and acting out of character, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-you-talk-too-much.htm\">endlessly chatting<\/a> when usually reserved.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/post-partum-psychosis\/\">NHS suggests<\/a> that postpartum psychosis affects one 500 women in the UK and should be treated as a medical emergency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\">7 Ways to improve postpartum care <\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"p23\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Nourish and nurture.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_124618\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43807243320_0f8788ff88.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124618\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-124618\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43807243320_0f8788ff88-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"postpartum care\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43807243320_0f8788ff88-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/43807243320_0f8788ff88.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-124618\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ellaolsson\/43807243320\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Ella Olsson<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s2\">Provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-eating-healthy-relationship-food.htm\">nutritious meals<\/a> for your body. And obviously while a long spa day is not likely to happen, little moments for yourself matter.\u00a0 A hot shower alone, or half an hour without the baby as your partner or family step in, can be crucial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s9\">2. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Move when you can.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s2\">The effect of movement in producing endorphins (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-happiness-really.htm\">happiness<\/a> hormones) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4703784\/\">now proven<\/a>.<\/span><span class=\"s10\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4703784\/\"><span class=\"s8\">Research<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> shows that endorphins increase with exercise. It does not have to be a full workout, it just needs to be movement. A<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> walk outside if weather permits, with or without baby. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\">Dancing<\/a> is another way to lift your spirits and help you cope with the day\u2019s challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Stop the comparison.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>Yes, your baby needs to be monitored to ensure<\/strong> they are hitting necessary health and development markers. But be wary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">unrealistic expectations<\/a> for your baby. Don\u2019t forget, babies develop at their own pace. So don\u2019t compare their milestones, sleep, or eating to other babies, beyond doctor&#8217;s guidelines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Another minefield of comparison is our postpartum body.<\/strong> Like babies, every body is unique, changes in its own way. While it is important to feel good in our skin and be healthy, we have to be aware of the work our body just gone through and work towards acceptance<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #993366;\"> A <a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/bmcpregnancychildbirth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1471-2393-14-330\"><span class=\"s7\">review<\/span><\/a> shows that women\u2019s view their postpartum body as a project to work on, and that this contributes to psychological distress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #333399;\">4. Use social media wisely.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>Speaking of comparison, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/social-media-body-image.htm\">social media<\/a> can be dangerous territory.<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"s3\">New mums today have to cope with the expectations of society, and representation of motherhood in social media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><strong>We have to be careful not to believe everything that social media says,<\/strong> and select people to follow wisely. A wealthy family with endless staged professional photographs of parents and child (and probably an entire team of staff helping out) is not going to make any new mother feel fantastic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span class=\"s2\">An online presence can, however, be beneficial if used to seek support instead of being used for <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">social comparison<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s2\">According to a <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1877575617302604\"><span class=\"s12\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">US survey<\/span><\/span><\/a>, 84% of new mothers felt like their social media community provides them social support.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s9\">5. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Spend time in nature as part of postpartum care.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p24\"><span class=\"s2\">Open the windows, or go outside, if possible to somewhere green. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationaljournalofwellbeing.org\/index.php\/ijow\/article\/view\/449\/509\"><span class=\"s13\">study<\/span><\/a> recommends connecting with nature to reduce stress and increase the feeling of contentedness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #333399;\">6. Skin-to-skin contact.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalpartnership.org\/our-work\/resources\/health-care\/maternity\/hormonal-physiology-of-childbearing.pdf\">National Partnership for Women and Families in America suggests<\/a> that,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\"><span class=\"s8\">&#8220;through the early weeks, skin-to-skin contact may benefit maternal psychological well-being by release of oxytocin and other hormones&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s15\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s9\">7.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">Partner time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\">And that leads to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/get-closer-intimacy-issues.htm\"> importance of intimacy<\/a> with your partner. This does not have to be sexual. But a hug goes a long way, as does a shoulder to release those fourth trimester tears.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4035568\/\">research review<\/a> on how we self-soothe identifies crying as a significant part of the process and as a stress release.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p27\"><span class=\"s2\">Be honest if you need postnatal support <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>Again, many women find themselves facing<\/strong> sudden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>, or having difficulties with their partner and family over parenting choices that leave them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stressed<\/a>. This can be made worse if their partner is also struggling (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postpartum-depression-in-men.htm\">postpartum depression also happens for men<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>And support really helps.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1523-536X.2006.00106.x\"> <span class=\"s18\">Research<\/span><\/a> looking at data from 22 different studies on postpartum care found that in women with family dysfunction or postpartum mood issues, home visits from a nurse and\/or peer support made a huge difference. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #666699;\">Only 15 per cent of women with peer support, for example, experienced depression, versus 52 per cent in those who didn\u2019t have that support.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Has having kids left you feeling empty or uncertain?
