Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s easy to find advice about how to deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">difficult people at work<\/a>. But what if it\u2019s you who is the difficult employee? And you can\u2019t seem to stop being that person?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why does it matter if I am a difficult employee?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Even with changes to the workplace <\/strong>since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">the pandemic<\/a>, many of us spend more time interacting with colleagues than with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">family<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Meaning difficult work relationships can bring a lot of<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\"> stress<\/a> to our lives. Joking about being a bad employee can be a way to hide that we feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxious<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">alone<\/a>. We might secretly worry about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dont-want-to-work.htm\">the future of our career<\/a>, or wonder if there is something wrong with us.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/24023210_Problematic_Interpersonal_Relationships_at_Work_and_Depression_A_Swedish_Prospective_Cohort_Study\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Swedish study<\/span><\/a> with over 4,000 participants directly connected low social support at work, serious conflict at work, and exclusion by superiors or by co-workers to employee depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Are you stuck in a pattern?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And sometimes work issues,<\/strong> if they are in all honesty an ongoing problem for us, across more than one job, aren&#8217;t just about work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Work issues can often be a reflection of personal issues we\u2019ve had for a long time. By taking our workplace problems seriously, we can often end up changing our life in general, not just our career<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What makes me a difficult coworker?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Not sure why people see you as difficult to work with? It&#8217;s worth<\/strong> asking yourself these questions, or even journalling about them. Be honest in your replies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Am I happy in my job? What sort of mood do I turn up in? Is that affecting others?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do I do my best, or am I always half hearted? What is that really about?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>What do I see as the positives and the negatives of this job? How do these beliefs affect how I behave at work?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do I feel equal to my colleagues? Or secretly more deserving? Or less? How might that affect how they perceive me? Or how I behave?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When others talk do I fully listen? Do I actually try to see their perspective?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Am I good at communicating? Do I clearly state my ideas and ideas?<\/li>\n<li>Do I feel listened to and understood? We struggle to understand social norms, have a personality that is very different to that of others, or can&#8217;t keep things impersonal and overreact to everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mental health issues that can lead to workplace conflict<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\">And all of these issues above can be directly related to diagnosable conditions or mental health issues.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Struggle to understand social norms?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-autism-spectrum-disorder.htm\">Autism spectrum disorder<\/a> means that your brain won\u2019t easily understand the social rules others seem to naturally just \u2018get\u2019. You might, for example, not realise when to stop talking about something, or when you are boring other people. And things like eye contact or people standing too close to you might leave you uncomfortable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Or sometimes it\u2019s a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\"> personality disorder<\/a> that is the issue. A personality disorder <\/span><span class=\"s1\">means your brain simply doesn\u2019t see the world in the same way others do. You are seen as a difficult employee but you actually can&#8217;t understand the way others think and act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Talk too much, do things without thinking, distract others, forget to finish things?<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/a> might be the issue. You might have been hired for being bright and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creative<\/a>, but now feel like you are constantly letting everyone down. Try as you might you tend to forget things, or not finish what needs to be done. It can also look like often being late, or being known as disruptive. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Always trying too hard, overcompensating, annoying others?<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> can leave us constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-paranoia.htm\">paranoid<\/a> about what others think of us. We can then try so hard to be liked we drive others crazy with our overcompensating. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Known as oversensitive? Blow hot and cold with colleagues?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">Borderline personalty disorder (BPD)<\/a> might be your issue. Main symptoms include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\">fear of being rejected<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\">abandoned<\/a> that sees you lash out then withdraw. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And the other main symptom is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">emotional dysregulation<\/a>. This means your emotions change too quickly and before you can stop them. It can feel like you lack some sort of emotional protective skin others have, and the end result is you come across as a difficult employee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124703\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-yan-krukov-7640484-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"difficult employee\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-yan-krukov-7640484-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-yan-krukov-7640484-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-yan-krukov-7640484-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-yan-krukov-7640484-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-yan-krukov-7640484.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Feel tense and unable to be yourself at work?\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Are you someone else entirely when at work, compared to when with your loved ones or at home? And do you have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\"> fearful thoughts<\/a> in the workplace? Or a sense of dread the closer you get to the office each morning? Always overthink all the things you said and did around colleagues and judge yourself? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">Social anxiety<\/a> can be the issue. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What should I do if I think I am a bad colleague? <\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Keep a diary for a week or two. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s better to start with facts over suspicions or anxieties. Keep a dairy for a few weeks of interactions with colleagues or things that actually go wrong, and of reactions of others you feel show they don\u2019t like you or are upset with you. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">What exactly happened? How did it make you feel, and what behaviour then followed?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Step back and see the big picture. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is this the first time you\u2019ve had an issue? Is it related to taking the wrong job you aren\u2019t comfortable with? Or is the truth that there are there parallels to the way you relate to others outside of work? Family, friends? Did you have similar issues at school? What is the real root of you seeming a difficult employee?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Ask for constructive feedback. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes we can create a situation in our head that is far different than the one we are actually in, particularly if we have anxiety or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>. So it\u2019s best to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/giving-constructive-feedback.htm\">feedback<\/a> before panicking. Often this helps us to see a more balanced picture, as everyone also has skills and positives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So what now? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes we have just taken a wrong turn. We\u2019ve <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/my-job-is-killing-me-losing-the-will-to-live.htm\">said yes to a job deep down we knew we\u2019d hate<\/a>. And our frustrations at constantly having to put all our time and energy towards something we don\u2019t like can leave us to be far from our best selves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If this is the case, then<\/strong> careers counselling or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">working with a coach<\/a> can be a godsend. We can get crystal clear on what we really want, as opposed to what we think we <em>should<\/em> want from life.
