Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We wish each other peace and joy<\/strong> each holiday season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">But how can we actually bring these feelings into our life and make them more than just words scrawled in a greeting card? And are they even realistic states of being?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Are peace and joy overrated?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Peace, for far too many people, means<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0 avoiding all and any<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\">conflict.<\/a>\u00a0Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">saying no to social events<\/a>, or life challenges that might in any way leave us feeling bad about ourselves, affecting our fragile sense of self.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">In truth, we aren\u2019t actually at peace at all. We are simply in hiding and playing small.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Peace doesn\u2019t come from avoiding things. <\/span>It comes from being so comfortable and<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\">confident with who we are <\/a>that we don\u2019t have to hide from conflict, as we can turn it into something calm and constructive. We don&#8217;t have to hide from <\/span><span class=\"s1\">life challenges and social interactions because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feel-like-a-failure.htm\">failures<\/a> and the opinions of others don\u2019t dictate who we are.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fake joy or real joy? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>As for joy, it, too, has false cousins. If we pretend we are happy all the time<\/strong> as a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-repressed-signs.htm\">repress old sadness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\">anger<\/a>? Or to be liked? Or because we are convinced \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/positive-psychology-movement-myths.htm\">acting positive<\/a>\u2019 will somehow magic away inner turmoil? It\u2019s not really joy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are also false notions about joy<\/strong> that are certainly popular, making the self-help industry millions, while making millions miserable and convinced they are a failure. And anger helps us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">set boundaries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">An interesting <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1745691611406927\">research study by a professor at Yale<\/a><\/span> found that aiming to only be happy all the time can have many negative consequences. It is connected to being less successful, more selfish, and also gullible. And it can lead to being overconfident and taking risks, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">excess alcohol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">drug consumption<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\"> binge eating<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">5 Steps to actually be more zen\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>But how do we go from fake inner zen to real? And truly build peace and joy into our lives for good?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Replace your anti-zen habits.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You know what they are. The things that leave you running on a stress high, like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/perfectionism-helping-or-harming.htm\">perfectionism<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">comparison\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/people-pleaser-meaning.htm\">people-pleasing<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">expectations.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As for what to replace them with? Two words &#8212; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">boundaries<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/accepting-what-is.htm\">acceptance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boundaries mean you<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">say no<\/a> when you are doing things only to please and create space in your life. Space to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\"> take care of yourself a<\/a>nd develop your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-ways-stronger-sense.htm\"> sense of self.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Acceptance means you stop getting trapped in<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/grass-is-greener-syndrome.htm\">grass is greener syndrome<\/a>. You take a hard look at your unrealistic and exhausting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-expectations.htm\">high expectations<\/a> for life, yourself, and others, and lower them as much as possible. It&#8217;s not about laziness, it&#8217;s about letting yourself feel good.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Change your patterns of attention<\/span>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">The funny thing about peace and joy is that they are often right in front of us, but we miss them entirely. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We are so busy focussing on what is not working<\/strong> in our lives, what is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\">stressing us out<\/a>, we walk right past a beautiful park every day on our way to go back to the office and eat at our desk. Constantly put off that dance class we meant to take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Two techniques are really powerful here. One is<\/strong>\u00a0good old<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\"> gratitude<\/a>. It&#8217;s made the rounds for years because it works. If you find it hard to remember to write down what you are grateful for in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\"> journal<\/a>, try attaching gratitude to something you always do, like always finding five things to be grateful for as you brush your teeth before bed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/clinmedjournals.org\/articles\/ijda\/international-journal-of-depression-and-anxiety-ijda-4-024.php?jid=ijda\">Data analysis using 60 research studies around gratitude<\/a> <\/span>found that it consistently lowered depression, regardless of the age group involved.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Then there is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>. It requires commitment, yes. But over time a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness practice<\/a> entirely realigns our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective<\/a> away from worries about the past and future, and directly to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> the now moment<\/a>\u00a0instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Retrain your thinking. <\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">If there is one thing that robs us most of peace and joy it\u2019s not what happens to us. It\u2019s what we think about what happens to us. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) <\/a><strong>is based on the concept that<\/strong> <strong>negative thinking sets of a cycle that leads directly to low moods.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thought<\/a> creates a negative emotion, which then creates a negative body sensation. That discomfort leads us to take a negative choice. And this negative action then starts another negative thought&#8230; and on the circle goes, until we feel depressed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">The magic word here is balanced thinking. It means that we learn to not think the very worse or go into victim mode. We also don&#8217;t use <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-positive-thinking.htm\">positivity<\/a> to bypass reality, which isn&#8217;t helpful either. Instead, we find the middle ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>If we get caught in a traffic jam on a way to an important pitch meeting,<\/strong> we don\u2019t immediately assume, &#8220;Well I&#8217;ll be so late I won&#8217;t get the contract now. Right,\u00a0 might as well just turn around and go home.&#8221; Or brush off what&#8217;s happening with fake positive thinking so that we don&#8217;t even call and let the others know we are late. Instead we calmly assess things then decide, &#8220;Well, it&#8217;s not ideal, but I&#8217;ll give them a call to let them know I&#8217;m late, and use this time stuck in traffic to practice saying my pitch out loud, which could actually help me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[Learn more in our article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">How to Practice Balanced Thinking<\/a>&#8220;].<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">4. Rehaul your relating skills. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124769\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thought-catalog-23KdVfc395A-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"peace and joy\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thought-catalog-23KdVfc395A-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thought-catalog-23KdVfc395A-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thought-catalog-23KdVfc395A-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thought-catalog-23KdVfc395A-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thought-catalog-23KdVfc395A-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Another common destroyer of peace and joy is<\/strong> relationship issues. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">Constant conflict<\/a> or issues with relating leave us feeling so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">lonely<\/a> and disconnected it can even affect our physical health long term.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The crazy thing about relating is that many of us think we are just doomed to always have bad relationships, or be alone. But in fact relating is simply a skill. Anyone can learn it, and, with enough practise, revolutionise their relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">learning how to properly listen<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">asking useful questions<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\">navigating conflict better<\/a><\/li>\n<li>knowing how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dangers-criticism-realise.htm\">offer constructive over destructive criticism<\/a><\/li>\n<li>managing your emotions if you tend to overreact and lash out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Another part of relating is accepting that we are not so different than everyone else.<\/strong> A wonderful habit to get into on this front is volunteering, which has been<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-017-4561-8\"> shown by research<\/a> to help with depression and increase life satisfaction.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">5. Get support.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes we&#8217;ve just lived through too much and we&#8217;re a bit broken inside.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">Childhood trauma<\/a>, for example, can leave us with so little sense of self and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">esteem<\/a>, that deep down we don&#8217;t even think we deserve good things. Or we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">convinced the world is so dangerous<\/a>,\u00a0 peace and joy just can&#8217;t happen. Or we just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\">feel angry. All the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It can feel like a death sentence, an endless life of misery. But it doesn&#8217;t have to be.<\/strong> Trauma affects our ways of thinking and being, but there are\u00a0 nowadays many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">therapies that are designed to help trauma<\/a>.
