True, you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/apathy-stop-caring.htm\">stopped caring<\/a> about things, the future seems hazy, and you probably have mild <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>. But it\u2019s no big deal. Or\u2026 is it? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">What is mild depression?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Mild depression means you have<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">signs of depression<\/a>, but still manage to keep up your daily routine, for the most part.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">S<\/span><span class=\"s1\">o mild depression symptoms mean you can still experience things like: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">negative and dark thoughts<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">sense of hopelessness<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">low self-esteem<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">lack of motivation <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">foggy thinking <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/irritability-factor.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">irritability <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">less interest in the things you usually enjoy<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The physical symptoms of mild depression<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Interestingly, research has also found that mild depression can manifest as physical symptoms <\/strong>more than other forms of depression. Meaning those with mild depression are more likely to seek medical help than psychological support. And unless their GP is trained in mental health, their real issue might be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.or.jp\/english\/journal\/pdf\/2011_02\/076_080.pdf\">paper on the clinical diagnosis of mild depression<\/a> <strong>connects mild depression most of all to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">insomnia<\/a>, and then to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">fatigue<\/a> and dizziness<\/li>\n<li>a heavy feeling head and headaches<\/li>\n<li>stomach and lower back pain<\/li>\n<li>stiffness in the shoulders<\/li>\n<li>a loss of appetite or weight loss<\/li>\n<li>constipation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why mild depression can end up a bigger problem than severe depression<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_124853\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124853\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-124853\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mentatdgt-1185433-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"mild depression\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mentatdgt-1185433-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mentatdgt-1185433-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mentatdgt-1185433-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mentatdgt-1185433-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mentatdgt-1185433.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-124853\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by mentatdgt from Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Whereas severe depression would see you hardly <\/strong>leaving the house, and moderate depression would be bad enough those around you were very aware you weren\u2019t okay?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">With mild depression you are \u2018coping\u2019, and people might just think you just aren\u2019t yourself. But that you\u2019ll manage. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And therein lies the real danger. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The problem with mild depression is that we can get away with it<\/strong> to the extent that it can be a far more isolating experience than it\u2019s apparently more serious siblings. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">And that means we are far less likely to get support, both from loved ones or from a professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Persistent depressive disorder<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes mild depression can go on not just for months, for years, or even decades<\/strong>. Bit by bit we stop trying in life, or we make increasingly negative or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/decision-making-skills-mental-health.htm\">dangerous decisions<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Note that if mild depression goes on for over two years, you can be diagnosed with &#8216;dysthymia&#8217;, or &#8216;persistent depressive disorder&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The signs of mild depression ruining your life<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Signs that mild depression is decimating your life can mean that you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">setting goals<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/my-job-is-killing-me-losing-the-will-to-live.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">stay in a job that is beneath you or that you hate<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">don\u2019t take care of your physical health<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">have poor<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\"> self-care<\/a> in general <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">indulge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">self-destructive habits<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-food.htm\">food<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">alcohol bingeing<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">don&#8217;t seek out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">new friends<\/a> or love interests <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">stay in bad bad relationships<\/a> as you don\u2019t see any hope for something better. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Bad decisions roll into stagnancy and we live a numb, checked out half life, and convince ourselves that is all there is for someone like us. We get so used to mild depression we no longer remember the difference. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But maybe I am just sad<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">Sadness and depression<\/a> can have similar symptoms, yes. But depression is different because it:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">goes on longer (six weeks or more)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">often has no direct cause, whereas we know why we are sad<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">comes with negative self-talk, where we are convinced we are useless<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">and hopelessness over just overwhelm. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But I\u2019ll snap out of it eventually<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"mild depression\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-ron-lach-8526161-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>When we have mild depression, like with other forms of depression, everything takes<\/strong> more effort to accomplish. So it is all too easy to just go into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/denial-in-psychology.htm\">denial<\/a> and tell ourselves that one day we\u2019ll snap out of it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-always-have-bad-luck.htm\">lucky<\/a> and do. But it\u2019s not worth taking that risk, not least because one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\">episode of depression<\/a> makes you more likely to have another in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2169519\/#R73\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research around the recurrence of depression is outdated<\/span><\/a>, involves many social and economic variables, and focuses mostly on major depression. But the general statistic used here is that once you have one episode of depression, you have a 50% chance of having another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So what do I do if I think I have mild depression?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">So what should you do if you think you have mild depression? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Make it concrete.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Again, denial can keep us endlessly trapped in walking depression. So it is useful to get your issue out there so you can\u2019t fall backwards into avoidance, but have to face it. Write the words out on paper. And then reach out to someone you trust and let them know you think you are depressed. If you have nobody to tell, then consider chatting with others in the privacy of a forum, or calling a free, confidential help line. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Accept that progress is not going to be comfortable. <\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Depression can become a comfort zone. It can end up, despite all the destruction it is causing in your life, feeling safe. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Happiness or effort, on the other hand, can feel not only scary but really uncomfortable, to the point you physically feel itchy or strange. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your depressed brain is actually trying to help you from what it perceives as danger (big bad life), so it\u2019s shutting down to conserve energy. Going against this primal instinct will not feel comfortable. The sooner you accept that, the less likely you are to panic and go back to old ways when you try to step forward and make changes. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. And then do one uncomfortable thing daily. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s important you write down each thing you do daily or it will be too easy to not bother. The goal is one different uncomfortable thing daily no matter how small. Actually getting up when the alarm goes instead of hitting snooze.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Doing your hair nicely instead of the usual sloppy ponytail. Eating a healthy breakfast instead of the sugary pastry you use to numb yourself out. Walking around the block at lunch instead of just staying at your desk. Having one glass of wine instead of three before bed. Or even trying a sober night. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Educate yourself about mild depression. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It can help to learn more about depression. What is it doing to your brain and body? How many other people are actually going through it to? What are your options? What tools can help? Are things like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\"> journalling<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">gratitude<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/food-and-mood.htm\">diet changes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">exercise<\/a>, and mediation worth trying? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Seek support. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Mild depression thrives on secrecy and on isolation. It is like our<\/strong> secret troll in the closet we spend all our time hiding at home feeding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The very best way to end the cycle is to get support.<\/strong> It can start with the support of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\"> trusted friends<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dysfunctional-family-help.htm\">family members<\/a>. But of course they are invested in your happiness, and this can feel stressful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a>,<\/strong> <strong>on the other hand, is unbiased. Their only goal is to help.<\/strong> They create a safe, confidential space to be very honest about what you are experiencing, a sounding board to start to understand any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-memories-are-they-real.htm\">hidden roots to your low moods<\/a>, and a support and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-accountability.htm\">accountability system<\/a> to help you in moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Time to stop living a numbed out life and start feeling alive again?
