But we all know that it isn\u2019t without its downsides. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><em><span class=\"s1\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsph.org.uk\/our-work\/campaigns\/status-of-mind.html\"><span class=\"s2\">The Royal Society for Public Health<\/span><\/a>, rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-doctor-about-anxiety.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a> in young people have risen 70% in the past 25 years, matching the rise of the internet and social media. And multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0747563220303927\"><span class=\"s2\">studies<\/span><\/a> have certainly found that social media and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> do have a strong link.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Social media and my mental health journey<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Like for many, social media was once a central part of my everyday life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It wasn\u2019t until my mental health took a turn for the worse that I began to wonder whether social media was causing me more harm than good. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Now, going several years without it, there\u2019s a big difference from the person I once was.<\/strong> But how much did quitting social media help towards actually benefiting my mental health?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">It all started out so innocently&#8230;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Throughout my teens, social media was still a new phenomenon, with<\/strong> additional platforms such as Twitter arriving on to the scene.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_124865\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124865\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-124865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-fauxels-3184435-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"social media\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-fauxels-3184435-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-fauxels-3184435-401x600.jpg 401w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-fauxels-3184435-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-fauxels-3184435.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-124865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Fauxels from Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>T<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>he most fun and exciting aspect of it was keeping up with <\/strong>my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a>. Despite spending the majority of my day with them at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-management-for-students.htm\">school<\/a>, I\u2019d immediately be logged onto my laptop and into Facebook as soon as I arrived home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>But then social media became easier and faster<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By the time I started attending college, most platforms evolved into apps, making it easier to use.<\/strong> I never had to log out, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Facebook<\/a> and Twitter being one tap away in my back pocket. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>With the arrival of apps such as Instagram and Snapchat, there became even more interesting ways to share snippets of our lives.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">My eyes were glued to my phone screen, convulsively checking for notifications and updates every two seconds.<\/span> <span class=\"s4\">There was so much content, and I didn\u2019t want to be left behind. I needed to feel &#8216;in the know&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>And now research tells me why the addiction was starting<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>While social media feels like mindless fun, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iomcworld.org\/open-access\/neurotransmitter-dopamine-da-and-its-role-in-the-development-of-social-media-addiction-59222.html\"><span class=\"s2\">research<\/span><\/a> shows that it has a significant effect<\/strong> on the brain. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">With likes, comments and other forms of interactions, it can activate the brain\u2019s reward centre, releasing a feel-good chemical known as dopamine. This is also the main chemical involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/addicted-to-texting.htm\">addictions<\/a>, associated with desire and pleasure. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Every time I came down from the slight buzz of an interaction, I\u2019d frequently feel the<\/strong> overwhelming urge to revisit the apps for more, bouncing from one platform to another.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>My moods start crashing<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>After a while, I began feeling a shift in myself and started increasingly suffering from <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">low moods<\/a>. Despite how much I tried to suppress it, I couldn\u2019t shake off the feeling of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\">despair<\/a>. It only caused me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-social-anxiety.htm\">withdraw further into myself<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Eventually, my social life began declining and I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">struggled to connect with my peers<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124866\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-alex-green-5700193-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"social media and mental health\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-alex-green-5700193-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-alex-green-5700193-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-alex-green-5700193-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-alex-green-5700193.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>I reached out to my doctor and I was put on antidepressants. My only aim was to<\/strong> return back to a sense of normality before leaving for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/university-and-depression-survival-guide-students.htm\">university<\/a>. For me, social media felt like the closest thing I had to that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s4\">It helped me sustain a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-connection-coronavirus.htm\">sense of connection<\/a>. As someone who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\">naturally introverted<\/a>, it also allowed me to express myself in a way that felt challenging to do in person<\/span><span class=\"s1\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">The Breaking Point<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>After two years of being on medication, there was no improvement in my mood.<\/strong> Between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/university-and-depression-survival-guide-students.htm\">adjusting to life at university<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-management-for-students.htm\">workload stress<\/a>, my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">symptoms of depression<\/a> were worsening. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This fuelled my use of social media, as it became a<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\"> form of distraction<\/a> from my unpleasant thoughts. This proved to be an unhealthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/avoidance-coping-depression.htm\">coping mechanism<\/a>, as I would end up addictively scrolling for hours on end. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">I didn\u2019t feel as though I could help it. And with every post and image I consumed, I questioned my worth. This stemmed from the constant comparisons to highlights and filtered images.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>The dangers of social comparison<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%25252Fa0033111\"><span class=\"s2\">Research<\/span><\/a> also now shows that comparing ourselves negatively with others on platforms such as Facebook contribute to the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\">rumination<\/a> (negative and addictive overthinking). And this increases the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">symptoms of depression<\/a>. It can all end up a negative, self-perpetuating cycle. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Which was definitely true in my case. The worse I felt, the more I scrolled. It only led me further into a never-ending loop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>By the time I graduated from university, Facebook resembled a status symbol among my peers<\/strong>. It became a platform reserved for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\"> successful job updates<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\">happy<\/a> announcements. My profile became inactive as the thought of posting anything gave me <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">anxiety<\/a>. My life felt too unworthy to share.<\/p>\n<h2>I had never even thought of leaving my social media life<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Despite how social media was making me feel, leaving it never felt like an option.<\/strong> I was worried that I\u2019d be out of touch with the world without it, and felt consumed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-the-fomo.htm\">fear-of-missing-out, otherwise known as FOMO<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><strong><span class=\"s5\">Ultimately, I reached a point where I felt so inadequate that it led to me having an <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">emotional breakdown<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">While I wouldn\u2019t go as far to blame social media itself, I do believe it enhanced my current struggles with my mental health and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\"> self-esteem<\/a>. Not only did my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> symptoms of anxiety worsen<\/a>, I also never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">felt more alone<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><em><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s when I made the liberating decision to take a break and deactivate my profiles on the apps. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">Did deactivating my profiles help?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124864\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-thought-catalog-2228555-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"social media and mental health\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-thought-catalog-2228555-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-thought-catalog-2228555-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-thought-catalog-2228555-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-thought-catalog-2228555-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-thought-catalog-2228555-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Initially, the decision to deactivate my profiles left me feeling anxious, much due to that<\/strong> FOMO. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">But with the apps gone, I could no longer scroll for proof to validate my fear of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-not-good-enough.htm\">being not good enough<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">To my surprise, the uneasiness quickly fell away, and was replaced with a sense of liberation. It was as though a tremendous amount of pressure had been lifted.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Day by day, I began to feel an improvement in my mood. I didn\u2019t feel as<\/strong> overwhelmed as I usually did, especially in the morning as I used to spend the first hour in bed scrolling on Instagram. For the first time in years, my mind had a sense of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/take-psychology-quiz\">mental clarity<\/a>. Without being bombarded with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\"> unrealistic expectations<\/a>, I wasn\u2019t clouded by the usual repetition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Would research support my feeling better without social media?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>According to a landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/guilfordjournals.com\/doi\/10.1521\/jscp.2018.37.10.751\"><span class=\"s2\">study<\/span><\/a> carried out by the University of Pennsylvania,<\/strong> reducing your social media use can significantly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\"> improve wellbeing<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"> The findings revealed that students who limited their use to just 30 minutes a day showed a decrease in symptoms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>As I stepped into a better headspace, I began to reflect on<\/strong> my relationship with social media. It allowed me the time to put everything into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The results made me entirely delete my accounts<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I couldn\u2019t believe how much more comfortable I felt within myself compared to before.<\/strong> The addictive nature of social media still made me question, from time to time, whether it was worth returning back to. But then I would remind myself that I was<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> pushed to my emotional limits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I didn\u2019t want to find myself stuck in the same <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-dysfunctional-behaviour.htm\">behavioural cycle<\/a><strong> that made me<\/strong> so unhappy. I concluded that it was best to prioritise my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> and I actually chose to properly delete all social media accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>And now, several years later, how do I feel?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Now, a couple years later, I couldn\u2019t be happier that I backed out of that world when I did.<\/strong> Turns out I don&#8217;t miss it. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">These days I keep a profile on Linkedin for my career, and that&#8217;s it for me. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And w<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>hile I can honestly say quitting social media clearly helped my wellbeing, I don\u2019t consider it a necessary step for everyone<\/strong> to take. Simply taking a break or limiting your use can make all the difference, allowing you to put your thoughts and feelings into perspective. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><strong>The key is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-social-anxiety.htm\">be mindful<\/a> of your usage and how it makes you feel<\/strong>, especially if you\u2019re struggling with your mental health like I was.
