But<\/strong> assumed it couldn&#8217;t be a serious form of psychotherapy?<\/p>\n<p><em>Think again. It&#8217;s a recognised and recommended intervention that requires no previous experience with creativity or art, and is suitable for all ages.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What is expressive arts therapy?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Expressive arts therapy uses creativity to treat<\/strong> mental health issues, emotional problems, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"> life challenges<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The idea is that the process of making something<\/strong> works as a way for us to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">communicate with ourselves<\/a> and find self-expression. And it allows us to understand our own potential and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-power-how-to.htm\">personal power<\/a> to create not just art, but our own lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If it&#8217;s helpful, think of expressive arts therapy as<\/strong> counselling that doesn&#8217;t need to involve much verbal expression. So in this way it&#8217;s the opposite to other forms of psychotherapy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What types of art are used during an art therapy session?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Again, it\u2019s about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\"> the process of creating<\/a>. Not about adhering to one form or style of art. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Expressive arts therapy can encompass<\/strong> painting, drawing, sculpture, collage. Working with clay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">words<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\">dance<\/a>, drama, movement, singing. Really anything that is about making something. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What is a typical expressive arts therapy session like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>There is not a \u2018typical\u2019 way for an art therapy session to be.<\/strong> Art therapy can be done in groups, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">alone<\/a>. It can involve your therapist giving you a certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">goal<\/a> for a creative task, such as asking you to draw your feelings around a certain situation. You might, for example, be working with a therapist who also trained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychodynamic-approach.htm\">psychodynamic therapy<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-counselling-case-study.htm\">CBT.<\/a> They would integrate methods from these therapies with art in your sessions. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What issues can art therapy help with?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Here in the UK art therapies are officially <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg155\">recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).<\/a> They recommend them <\/span><span class=\"s1\">for children, young people, and adults with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\">schizophrenia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/confused-thoughts.htm\">psychosis<\/a>. NICE also suggests creative therapies as a helpful treatment for children and young people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-think-i-was-abused-as-a-child.htm\">recovering from abuse<\/a> or with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-and-depression.htm\">chronic fatigue syndrome<\/a>, and as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing activity<\/a> for those 65 and over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>With its focus on creativity over verbal expression, art therapy is also often used for <\/strong>\u00a0those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\">learning issues<\/a> that affect their communication. This includes\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-autism-spectrum-disorder.htm\">autism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Other issues that might be helped with expressive arts therapy\u00a0 include: <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">addictions<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/birthday-blues-milestones-affect-mental-health.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">ageing<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">anger issues <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">anxiety and anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-disorder-treatment-therapy.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">borderline personality disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">childhood trauma and neglect<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">communication problems <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mild-depression.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">depression <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-eating-disorders.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">eating disorders<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">emotional difficulties <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">illness and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">medical conditions<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">lack of confidence <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/tired-of-being-alone.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">loneliness<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">low sense of self<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">relationship issues<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">stress<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dont-want-to-work.htm\">work problems<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>But is it a serious intervention?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Art contributed to the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychotherapeutic-approaches-the-main-schools-of-thought.htm\">forms of talk therapy that are popular today,<\/a> and how they approach treatment for difficult or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"> traumatic childhoods<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In 1973, established psychoanalyst Alice Miller announced she had <\/strong>discovered her childhood history. But not through the process of psychoanalysis, rather through spontaneous painting. Shunned at the time by the psychoanalytical community for the questions this threw on its processes, she ended up writing a book. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Drama-Being-Child-Search-True\/dp\/1860491014\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Drama of Being a Child: The Search for the True Self\u201d<\/a> went on to became a sensation and bestseller. It contributed to our current understanding of the causes and effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">abuse and neglect<\/a> on children and on society at large.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">And note that here in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareers.nhs.uk\/explore-roles\/allied-health-professionals\/roles-allied-health-professions\/art-therapistart-psychotherapist\">the National Health Services (NHS)<\/a> have recognised art therapy as a profession since 1997.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>What does research have to say about art as therapy?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-124946\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mike-jones-9051450-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"what is expressive arts therapy\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mike-jones-9051450-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mike-jones-9051450-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mike-jones-9051450-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mike-jones-9051450.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>It can be difficult to do rigorous research on the effects of creative arts therapy because<\/strong> it&#8217;s an umbrella therapy. So many types of creating are used, and in different ways. Sessions tend to be unique.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1524838014555032\">an overview of six research studies on the effects of art therapy on trauma symptoms<\/a> [1] concluded that the quality of the studies was inconsistent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Even so, more than half the studies reported a significant decreased in trauma symptoms. And one study found a clear connection between arts therapy and a significant decrease in depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>As for the effects of making art on stress,<\/strong> a<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/1524838014555032\"> small but interesting study<\/a> [2]found that 45-minutes of making art significantly lowered cortisol levels in participants.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A brief history of art therapy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Alice Miller used\u00a0 art to change our<\/strong> understanding of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\"> child abuse.<\/a>\u00a0But she was not the point that creative art therapies took off from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Creative art therapies were integrated with therapies far earlier.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-introduction-jungian-psychology.htm\">Carl Jung<\/a> himself experimented with creativity and integrated it into his work, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-archetypes.htm\">his strong interest in drawing mandalas<\/a>. But creative art therapy began to receive recognition in England and America more in the 1940s, with the work of people like psychoanalyst <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Naumburg\">Margaret Naumburg<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">How do I find an art therapist? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s important you find an art therapist who is properly trained and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/registered-therapists-quality-standards-uk.htm\">registered<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Here in the UK art therapy is an<\/strong> MA program at university. And your therapist should be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcpc-uk.org\/standards\/standards-of-proficiency\/arts-therapists\/\">registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)<\/a>. If you aren\u2019t sure about a therapist\u2019s qualifications, don\u2019t feel nervous to ask before booking.
