What is possibly behind this autism and LGBTQ+ link? And how does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/asperger-syndrome-case-study.htm\">being autistic<\/a> and being part of the LGBTQ community impact a person?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><em>Writer Kylie Noble explores.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Autism and sexuality<\/h2>\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-17794-1\"> 2021 study led by the University of Cambridge<\/a> is the largest study on the sexual activity, orientation, and health of autistic adults to date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It found that autistic teenagers and adults are eight times more likely to<\/strong> identify as asexual or of \u201cother\u201d sexuality than their non-autistic peers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/women-and-girls-with-autism.htm\">Autistic girls and women<\/a> were found to be three times more likely to identify as gay than non-autistic peers. And autistic boys and men were found to be closer to four times more likely to identify as bisexual than non-autistic peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Autism and gender<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The same study found that autistic people are also more likely to identify as<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/transgender-mental-illness.htm\">transgender<\/a> or gender non-conforming.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Of the almost 600,000 adults that were surveyed, trans and non-binary\/genderqueer adults were up to six times more likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-be-assessed-for-adult-autism.htm\">diagnosed as autistic<\/a> than cisgender people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2904453\/\">2010 study<\/a> published in <em>the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders<\/em> also reported that autistic people are more likely to experience<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-gender-dysphoria.htm\"> gender dysphoria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>More honest about sex and gender?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-125057\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-tara-winstead-8378752-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"autism and lgbtq\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-tara-winstead-8378752-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-tara-winstead-8378752-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-tara-winstead-8378752-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-tara-winstead-8378752-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-tara-winstead-8378752.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>There are no clear answers for why those on the <\/strong>autistic spectrum might be more likely to identify as LGBTQ+. Scientists simply don&#8217;t know exactly why some people are autistic and others aren&#8217;t. Or why exactly we make the gender and sexuality choices we do.<\/p>\n<p>John Strang, director of the Gender and Autism Program at Children\u2019s National Hospital in Washington, put forward an interesting theory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectrumnews.org\/news\/gender-and-sexuality-in-autism-explained\/\">when interviewed for <em>Spectrum News<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He suggests that it&#8217;s connected to the unfiltered directness that autism can bring,<\/strong> meaning people are more open about what they experience in life. He said &#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201cYou could then understand the co-occurrence as perhaps a more honest expression of underlying experiences.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>In other words, autistic people may simply hide less<\/strong> about their experiences and desires.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A connected idea is suggested in the same article by <\/strong>Dutch researcher Jeroen Dewinter, and relates to the fact that being autistic tends to mean you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">see things in black and white<\/a>.\u00a0 He suggests autism means you are faster to identify as\u00a0 bisexual based on one same-sex experience. Whereas someone who doesn&#8217;t have autism can have several kinds of sexual experiences but still identify as heterosexual and brush it off as &#8216;experimenting&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it harder for autistic people to be LGBTQ+?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-125068\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mental-health-america-mha-5543181-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"autism and lgbtq\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mental-health-america-mha-5543181-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mental-health-america-mha-5543181-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mental-health-america-mha-5543181-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-mental-health-america-mha-5543181.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>On one hand, autistic people are used to being<\/strong> outside the &#8216;norm&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other, autism means we learn social norms from <\/strong>those around us. Because the natural instinct for social rules that others seem to have isn&#8217;t present. We are left to believe what we are told, or copy the behaviour of others. This could be peers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dysfunctional-family-help.htm\">family<\/a> and media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If an autistic person grows up in an environment that is accepting of LGBTQ people?<\/strong> Then they will learn that diversity of sexuality and gender is permitted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If, on the other hand, an autistic person grows up in an environment that is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/internalised-homophobia.htm\">homophobic<\/a>, transphobic and\/or with strict gender roles? Then they learn that deviance from the majority is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Autistic people are more literal and less flexible in their thinking. So growing up in a non-supportive setting may make it especially difficult for an LGBTQ+ person to accept their difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Autism, LGBTQ, and mental health<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The same University of Cambridge study mentioned above also found that gender-diverse individuals were also more likely to have received a diagnoses of a mental health condition. For example, they were twice as likely to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mild-depression.htm\">experienced\u00a0 depression<\/a> than their cisgender counterparts.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Autistic people experience life and the world in a different way,<\/strong> and have struggles in understanding and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\"> communicating feelings and thoughts<\/a>. Autistic people who are LGBTQ may therefore feel very confused, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-doctor-about-anxiety.htm\">anxious or depressed<\/a> about sexuality, gender and relationships.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>And there is the added pressure of belonging to two marginalised groups in society.<\/strong> This creates two-fold \u201cminority stress\u201d. This is increased once again if the person is non-white or living in poverty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>My experience &#8211; coming out as autistic\u00a0and gay\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<div><strong>I identified as bisexual for a few years. But then I was diagnosed as autistic<\/strong> at aged 25. It ended up being the missing puzzle piece for me. After my diagnosis I could look back on my life and realise that dating men was part of a myriad of ways I had tried to fit in.\u00a0 A way to fight the constant feeling that I was different.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Since my diagnosis as autistic I shifted from identifying as<\/strong> bisexual to identifying as gay.\u00a0 And I&#8217;ve gone from cisgender to non-binary.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In summary, for me, being diagnosed as autistic has been a liberating experience. It has helped me <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-self.htm\">live more authentically<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">achieve better mental wellbeing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Can therapy help with LGBTQ+ and autism issues?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes. It can really help you <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\">develop confidence<\/a>, and to learn how to clarify your needs and get them met. And it can also help you with things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">relating skills<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/understanding-people.htm\">understanding others<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course autistic people\u2019s communication needs can be in opposition<\/strong> to the norms of therapy.
