I was told to expect the best years of my life, that I would make unforgettable memories and lifelong friendships. Nowhere had anyone bought up mental health at university.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The university dream vs reality<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I arrived prepared, fully kitted out with all of<\/strong> my student essentials. While my last-minute accommodation wasn\u2019t as aesthetically appealing as my 20-piece kitchen set, my housemates seemed nice. And I was eager to get settled in.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">But the transition into student life wasn\u2019t at all what I had imagined. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The first few weeks were a huge adjustment.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Fresher week pressure<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Socialising proved to be a struggle. Fresher\u2019s week was filled with nothing but<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\"> booze-fuelled events<\/a>, even when it came to daytime gatherings. As someone who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\">naturally introverted<\/a> and doesn\u2019t like to drink, I found the pressure of big nights out overwhelming. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I didn\u2019t feel like going most of the time,<\/strong> and I only wish I had stayed home when I did. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">My choice for not drinking was often questioned, making me feel singled out and awkward. I was smart enough to win a place at university, but it was as though my tutors spoke a different language, one everyone else understood but me. And the more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-overwhelmed-with-life.htm\">overwhelmed<\/a> I felt at this sudden stupidity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">the less I could concentrate<\/a>, the worse the problem became. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I feared being called on during seminars, afraid <\/strong>I would make myself look like a fool. Sometimes, my hands shook uncontrollably, and I would get the desperate urge to escape. And I suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exam-stress.htm\">exam anxiety<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Panic made me skip classes<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It reached the point where I was suffering from <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attacks<\/a> before class. I started regularly skipping lectures and seminars as the thought of attending became unbearable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It only made me feel more behind, and I <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">constantly worried<\/a> about how I would be able to catch up. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/impostor-syndrome.htm\">felt like a fraud<\/a> and wondered whether I was ever deserving of my place at university to begin with.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>And then the loneliness hit<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By the end of the first semester, it appeared that my housemates and most of my peers had settled<\/strong> well into their new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friendship<\/a> groups. Me, on the other hand? I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">could barely leave my room<\/a>. It only made me feel worse in the end and even more<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/covid-christmas.htm\"> homesick<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">I knew I couldn\u2019t go on feeling like this, so I decided to do something about it. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Reaching out to student support services<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I was really nervous, but I contacted the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">mental health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">wellbeing service<\/a> on campus and arranged a one-to-one meeting with one of the advisers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The woman I saw was lovely and gently encouraged me to get<\/strong> everything off my chest. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">I told her I was struggling and was surprised at how understanding she was. I was also shocked to hear how common it is for new students to struggle during their first year. This was alien to what I was led to believe about being a fresher, but it was comforting to know I wasn\u2019t alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Help for mental health at university<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>With the help of weekly follow-up appointments with the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> service, I was offered a range of academic and emotional support. I was also referred to an off-campus counselling service nearby for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy<\/a> sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I was nervous as I had never tried one-to-one therapy before.<\/strong> The only other form of help I ever received in the past for mental health was a referral to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">mood management<\/a> course as a teenager.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It wasn\u2019t the best experience as the course was held in a group setting and I didn\u2019t find it particularly helpful. I imagined myself being sat opposite the<\/strong> watchful eye of my therapist, panicking about what to say or what they would think about me. However, once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-makes-a-good-therapist.htm\">my therapist<\/a> introduced himself to me, I knew I was in a safe space. He was lovely and not at all intimidating like I thought he would be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">He explained<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-behavioral-interventions.htm\"> the purpose of CBT<\/a>, giving me a general idea of what to expect from the session. I felt reassured as it made the process less daunting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We briefly explored what brought me there and how I was currently feeling<\/strong> in the last few months leading up to this. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It was slightly uncomfortable in the beginning, mainly because it was the first time hearing some of my thoughts out loud. But by the end of the first session, I felt a great sense of relief after releasing some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> that were festering in my mind for months. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I was also hopeful, as I already had a better understanding of how I was feeling,<\/strong> and most importantly, what I wanted to change. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The Breakthrough <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>After several more sessions, it became clear what the underlying problem was.<\/strong> While I struggled with both the social and academic side of student life, it all tied in with my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>. My negative thoughts were rooted in the false belief that I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-not-good-enough.htm\">wasn\u2019t good enough<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>However, the more aware I was of my thoughts, the easier<\/strong> it became to challenge and change them as the weeks went on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>One of things I found most helpful about CBT was<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-dysfunctional-behaviour.htm\">breaking down my behaviour<\/a> and identifying my triggers. This helped me understand my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\"> thinking patterns<\/a> and gave me a further understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">how my anxiety worked<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>I also found it particularly helpful to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">log down what I was feeling<\/a> over the week and talk about it with my therapist. Together, we would build on new coping strategies and techniques to prevent behaviours that didn\u2019t help me in the long run. By then, my CBT sessions had come to an end, but I was still applying everything that I had learnt. This made settling in much easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Compared to my first year, I didn\u2019t feel pressured to live up to any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">expectations<\/a> and was able to ease into my studies. Not to mention I wasn\u2019t as anxious during my lectures and seminar, which improved my ability to concentrate.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Why you should take\u00a0 your mental health at university seriously<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>With the help of the university, I also had some extra support in place.<\/strong> After being encouraged to claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/disabled-students-allowance-dsa\">DSA (Disabled Student Allowance)<\/a> over the summer, I was provided with a specialist mentor for tailored one-to-one support. This helped me to manage my workload, allowing me to keep on top of my assignments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Even when I struggled, I felt comfortable enough to<\/strong> gain further support from my tutors when needed. I had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\">newfound sense of confidence<\/a>, especially when it came to being more vocal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>With new modules that year, I was introduced to more of my classmates<\/strong>, finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">making like-minded friends<\/a> in the process. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">When I opened up to them about my mental health, I was surprised that many of them could relate and had some difficulties adjusting too. This made me realise that everyone was on a journey of their own and there was no reason to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">feel ashamed<\/a> of my struggle.
