If it goes on long enough, even our personality can start to feel different. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And for those who truly suffer,<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-disorder-tips-insomnia.htm\"> insomnia cures<\/a> can feel an endless letdown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Why don\u2019t they work for some of us? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Insomnia cures for the masses <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/digital-fatigue.htm\">stop using screens<\/a> a few hours before bed, our room is the recommended temperature. We\u2019ve changed our mattress and bought black out blinds. And yet here we are, wide awake again, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rising-early-5am-club.htm\">getting up very early<\/a> knowing we won&#8217;t get more sleep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The problem with this scenario is that is assumes that insomnia is an <i>exterior <\/i>issue. When research consistently points out that sleeplessness is often an <i>interior <\/i>issue, inextricably connected to our mental health.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But aren\u2019t my moods only bad because of my sleeplessness? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/our-work\/research\/sleep-and-mental-health-uk\">survey by the Mental Health Foundation<\/a>,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><strong>almost half us of us here in the UK feel poor sleep is affecting our mental health. More than <\/strong>a third of us feel poor sleep leaves us with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety<\/a>, 43 per cent feel it gives them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-anger.htm\">anger issues<\/a>, and 42 per cent claim it leaves them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stressed<\/a> and in overwhelm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>On the other hand, who hasn&#8217;t found that when we are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">anxious, stressed<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\">angry<\/a>, it\u2019s hard to fall asleep? And for those who suffer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">major depressive disorder<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">bipolar disorder<\/a>, sudden issues with sleep can signify they are about to have another episode. So it comes before the difficult moods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Sleeplessness and mental health &#8211; chicken or egg? <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_125146\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125146\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-125146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-eminumana-2871490-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"sleeplessness\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-eminumana-2871490-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-eminumana-2871490-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-eminumana-2871490-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-eminumana-2871490.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-125146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Emin Umana for Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Researchers now see sleep and mental health issues as a<\/strong> \u2018bidirectional relationship\u2019, a bit like the chicken or egg conundrum. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">Sleep problems<\/a> can be a cause and a consequence of mental health challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Matthew Walker, neuroscientist and director at the <\/strong>Centre for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cI have not been able to discover a single major psychiatric condition in which sleep is normal. So I think sleep has a profound story to tell in both our understanding, our treatment, and maybe even ultimately our prevention of grave mental illness\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But how does all this help my insomnia? <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_125147\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125147\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-125147\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-shvets-production-7203956-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"cure for insomnia\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-shvets-production-7203956-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-shvets-production-7203956-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-shvets-production-7203956-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-shvets-production-7203956.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-125147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Shvets Production for Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">If constant sleeplessness is a problem it\u2019s worth taking a good, hard, and honest look at your mental health. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Have you often suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-doctor-about-anxiety.htm\">depression or anxiety<\/a>?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">unresolved childhood issues<\/a> or traumas? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Are you comfortable with your emotions or do you tend to avoid or downplay them?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you know how to self soothe when you are upset?<br \/>\nOr do you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">bad habits or addictions<\/a> to avoid your emotions and self?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Is there a history of mental health issues in your family? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Were you a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-oversensitive.htm\">sensitive child<\/a>? Are you still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-be-less-sensitive.htm\">oversensitive<\/a>?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Was your childhood stable, did you feel loved?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you have people to talk to? Or do you have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/reaching-out-support.htm\">deal with everything alone<\/a>?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Other insomnia cures that really don\u2019t work\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Back to neuroscientist Matthew Walker&#8230; he has strong viewpoints<\/strong> on some of the insomnia cures out there. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Don\u2019t stay in bed if you suffer sleeplessness.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The idea to just lie in a dark, cool room hoping for the best\u2026 nope. Walker actually suggests that it\u2019s better to train the brain to see the bedroom as only for sleep. If you can\u2019t sleep it\u2019s better to get up and go to another room and do a quiet activity like reading. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Don&#8217;t rely on sleeping pills. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">He isn\u2019t optimistic about prescription sleeping pills. They sedate you but don\u2019t actually provide real sleep, or any of the restorative benefits of real sleep. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. And don\u2019t use alcohol to knock yourself out before bed.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s the same issue.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\"> Alcohol<\/a> a sedative, which might effectively knock you out. But again, it\u2019s not a naturalistic sleep. And it blocks your REM sleep which is critical for mental health. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What sorts of talk therapy can help me sleep? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So can talk therapy help? Actually, yes.<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">If you experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">neglect<\/a>, then a therapy that manages your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thinking<\/a> would be a good place to start.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"> Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> is often recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/bjgp.org\/content\/69\/686\/e657\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research overview<\/span><\/a> looking at 13 trials involving over 1500 adults concluded that participants who had had undergone at least four to six sessions of CBT therapy struggled much less with insomnia.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There are also newer therapies that are a bit like brain training.<\/strong> You don\u2019t have to endlessly talk about your past, instead they work to stabilise your emotional reactions. This means your anxiety lowers and you can cope better. These include<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/emdr-therapy.htm\"> eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR),<\/a> clinical hypnotherapy, and <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/blog\/posts\/what-is-bwrt-therapy\">brain working recursive therapy (BWRT)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mindfulness for sleeplessness<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And don\u2019t overlook <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>, a tool used by many therapists nowadays in their work with clients. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6557693\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2019 research overview<\/span> <\/a>concluded that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">mindfulness meditation<\/a> was effective for some forms of insomnia, and that over the long term it competes in effectiveness with other evidence-based insomnia treatments. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And Walker, who admits as a scientist he actually was suspicious<\/strong> of meditation, now actually recommends it.
