The body doesn\u2019t lie, goes the saying, and when it comes to stress \u2018<strong>general adaptation syndrome<\/strong>\u2019 is a tell all.<\/p>\n<h2>What is general adaptation syndrome?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>General adaptation syndrome, or \u2018GAS\u2019, is a fancy way of<\/strong> describing the biological chain of reactions that stress triggers in your body. The term is attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK349158\/\">endocrinologist Hans Selye.<\/a> Way back in the 1930s he noticed the stress the poor rats in his laboratory were going through had similarities with those his patients when a medical student did. It had a predictable physical pattern.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And your body will experience this pattern of physical symptoms even if it\u2019s not a bad stress you are going through. So<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/made-redundant-covid-19.htm\"> losing your job<\/a> could set it all off, but so something like the positive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/weddings-and-depression-pnd.htm\">stress of getting married<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/love-or-infatuation.htm\">love of your life<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Why should I care about GAS?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a useful way to tell if you are more stressed than you realise.<\/strong> If you are trying to convince yourself you are \u2018fine\u2019, and things are \u2018under control\u2019, general adaptation syndrome can help you realise if that is not true. You can then take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-management-for-students.htm\">steps to lower your stress<\/a>, such as by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learn-how-to-delegate.htm\">\u00a0delegating things<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">saying no to people<\/a>. This is down to our<\/strong> primal brain, which unfortunately has not kept up with the times. It\u00a0 can react to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">a colleague being snarky<\/a> with us much the same effect as if a bear was attacking us in the woods. It \u2018sounds the alarm\u2019 with the infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">\u2018fight or flight\u2019 response<\/a>, now called \u2018fight flight or freeze\u2019 as it turns some of us go for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freeze-response.htm\">deer in the headlights response<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And fight or flight leaves our \u2018sympathetic nervous system\u2019 being triggered.<\/strong> This system manages how our stomach, heart, muscles, and bladder\/intestines get on. (So if you ever wondered why stress makes you need the loo, there\u2019s your answer.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alarm stage symptoms are short. A few seconds, sometimes longer. <\/strong>They are the precursors to the more well-known stress symptoms, that moment where you feel like you\u2019ve been given a shot of something or drank ten coffees. Symptoms include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>suddenly feeling hot or flushed<\/li>\n<li>your heart starting to beat faster<\/li>\n<li>feeling like your senses are sharpened, or like all is \u20183-D\u2019<\/li>\n<li>eye dilation<\/li>\n<li>breathing faster and less deeply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Resistance<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Resistance (or the &#8216;adaptation&#8217; phase) brings the bigger stress symptoms most of us <\/strong>recognise. This is augmented by the body now releasing cortisol. So we are looking at things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>upset stomach<\/li>\n<li>headaches<\/li>\n<li>mood swings<\/li>\n<li>lethargy<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\">sleep problems<\/a><\/li>\n<li>muscle tension<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">brain fog<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">poor concentration<\/a><\/li>\n<li>feeling on edge and irritable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note that this adaptation phase can go on for<\/strong> days, weeks, months&#8230;in some cases, years. Such as in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">complex trauma and c-PTSD<\/a>, even years.<\/p>\n<h3>Exhaustion<\/h3>\n<p><strong>This &#8216;stage three&#8217; has an alternate, which is &#8216;recovery&#8217;.<\/strong> This happens when we deal well with the resistance stage and lower our stress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Otherwise the stage three of &#8216;exhaustion&#8217; means<\/strong> <strong>we\u00a0 can cycle back through<\/strong> the symptoms of the alarm phase (sweating, racing heart, etc). And also end up with symptoms like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">fatigue<\/a> that no amount of coffee can stop<\/li>\n<li>lowered tolerance for stress<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burn-out-syndrome.htm\">burnout<\/a> &#8211; that &#8220;I&#8217;m done&#8221; feeling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>At this point, the body&#8217;s<\/strong> immune system is depleted. We can develop physical illness like diabetes and cardiovascular issues. And we can also develop mental illness.<\/p>\n<h2>General adaptation syndrome and mental health<\/h2>\n<p><strong>When we allow stress to cycle through to the exhaustion phase, we put ourselves in line<\/strong> for mental health issues like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety and anxiety disorders<\/a> (generalised anxiety disorder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic disorder<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fears-and-phobias.htm\">phobias<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mild-depression.htm\">depression<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can I stop the stages of stress?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Once our fight, flight, or freeze mode has triggered, there are self help tools that can really<\/strong> help our mind and body calm down. Such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>breath work and deep breathing<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">progressive muscle relaxation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\">visualisation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">journalling<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-ecopsychology.htm\">getting out in nature<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Of course the obvious choice for dealing with stress and the GAS response is to step away <\/strong>from the stressor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/saying-no.htm\">Say no<\/a>, walk away, ask someone else to do all or part of the responsibility you are struggling with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But part of high-end stress can be<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\"> cognitive distortions<\/a>, thinking that isn\u2019t true. We can believe we are trapped, that we \u2018have\u2019 to do something. Or that if we don\u2019t we are some sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-fear-of-failure.htm\">failure<\/a>, and will \u2018never again get this sort of opportunity\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2>What types of therapy can help?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy<\/a> can be a great help here.
