But what about children and stress? How can we tell they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">feeling stressed<\/a>, what can help them cope, and what can parents do to help?<\/p>\n<h2>Signs of stress in children and teens<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Children and even teenagers do not always have the skills to verbalise <\/strong>their stress. How do we as parents know if they are going through something?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stress affects all the systems in the body. <\/strong>This is as true for children and adults, so parents can be on the lookout for physiological signs. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\">changes to eating<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\">sleeping patterns<\/a>, headaches, stomach aches, ongoing colds and flu, shortness of breath, and dizziness.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4166684\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study on stress in primary school<\/span><\/a>\u00a0illustrated the importance of school nurses and health educators in recognising stress in children. This is because stress symptoms in kids so often present as physical symptoms, from mild signs such as chills to more severe ones, like nausea and vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/feelings-symptoms-behaviours\/feelings-and-symptoms\/stress\/\">According to the NHS,<\/a><strong> it&#8217;s also important to look out for changes in behaviour. This could be <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/irritability-factor.htm\">irritability<\/a> or becoming more withdrawn.<\/p>\n<h2>Stress in babies and toddlers<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Responding to stress is part of a baby&#8217;s development.\u00a0<\/strong> An article published by <a href=\"https:\/\/developingchild.harvard.edu\/science\/key-concepts\/toxic-stress\/\">Harvard university points out<\/a> that stress can be positive when the effects are brief (crying when the mother leaves the room). It can be tolerable when the more significant impact can be buffered by a supportive and nurturing environment (the mother leaves the room and a loving grandmother soothes the baby).<\/p>\n<p><strong>But stress can also be extremely toxic for a child, when the adversity experienced is<\/strong> strong, frequent or prolonged. (The mother leaves the baby screaming, hungry, and alone for an hour in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">an episode of neglect<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125370\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125370\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-125370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-keira-burton-6624310-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"children and stress\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-keira-burton-6624310-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-keira-burton-6624310-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-keira-burton-6624310-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-keira-burton-6624310.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-125370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Keira Burton for Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4074672\/\">article published in the Paediatrics Journal<\/a> talks about how extreme early life stress can affect the child&#8217;s immune system, and can cause multiple negative health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is hope, however, if a positive intervention occurs during <\/strong>a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/erikson-theory-eight-stages.htm\">child&#8217;s developmental growth<\/a>. If a child grows up in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">neglectful environment<\/a>, but are removed within the a certain developmental window, longer-term effects can be mitigated.<\/p>\n<h2>Children and stress<\/h2>\n<p><em>As a child grows, their ability to cope with adversity develops as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>But the number of stressors they have to face also increase, as they<\/strong> go to school and have to navigate social relationships. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">Lack of connection<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\">bullying<\/a> and academic pressure can significantly increase stress in a child&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other hand, the changes of childhood can also help your child cope.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">Friendships<\/a>, positive relationships with educators, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">self-esteem<\/a> from academic achievement are all examples of this.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4928741\/#B8-children-01-00390\">review on toxic stress<\/a><\/span> talks about the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilience<\/a> (how someone can adapt to adversity despite the circumstances). And it found that children with resilience have strong relationships with their teachers.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Stress in adolescence<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Adolescence is a time of human life when <\/strong>stress factors certainly increase. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/304190804_Stress_in_Adolescence_Effects_on_Development\">study investigating adolescent stress<\/a> points out that teens are facing physical and sexual changes, as well as social and academic pressure.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And it&#8217;s a time when we perceive stress differently. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11682-020-00294-7#:~:text=Developmental%2520studies%2520suggested%2520that%2520adolescents,to%2520stress%2520perception%2520and%2520processing.\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a> that\u00a0 teens are more vulnerable to the effect of stressors, because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\">areas of the brain perceiving and processing stress are still developing<\/a>. Model positive behaviours.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>We can help our children from early on to avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-issues-in-children.htm\">mental health issues in children<\/a> by modelling positive coping methods, and talking to them about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-management-for-students.htm\">what to do in stressful situations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Give them power.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Teach them problem-solving skills, then let them make their own mistakes and find their own solutions so they can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\">develop confidence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Go green.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-ecopsychology.htm\">Spending time in nature<\/a> is very important, especially for those who live in urban settings. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1877042812008269\">study<\/a>\u00a0found that children who have access to nature cope better with adversity than their peers who don&#8217;t. So if you live in a built up area, try to take family time outs in local parks, and consider working time in nature into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-get-along-with-your-family.htm\">family holidays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">4. Get creative.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s is drawing, writing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\">dancing<\/a>, or cooking without recipes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creativity<\/a> can be a healthy way to express and process what&#8217;s going on. <a href=\"https:\/\/mental.jmir.org\/2018\/4\/e11290\/\">Research shows<\/a>, for example, that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\"> journaling helps us cope with stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">5. Be active.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">Physical exercise<\/a>, especially cardio, can lighten your mood, strengthen your immune system, and increase your feeling of overall well-being. According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/exercise-guidelines\/physical-activity-guidelines-children-and-young-people\/\"> NHS guidelines<\/a>, young people between ages five to 18 should &#8220;aim for an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity a day across the week&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">6. Try mindfulness.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> is more and more popular amongst children and teenagers. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry\/article\/effectness-of-the-mindfulness-in-schools-programme-nonrandomized-control-feasibility-study\/BEB4925E41DEB31345A4FB14FA264A09\">British study<\/a> looked at including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-for-children.htm\">mindfulness for children<\/a>\u00a0in school curriculums. It found that the children taking part in the mindfulness programme show lower rates in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">stress and depression<\/a>, and increased rates in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">well-being<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Support for kids<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes a child, like anyone, can feel worried about sharing their stress for fear of upsetting those they love. Even if you are their parent. So sometimes they, too, can benefit from a private and safe space to talk to someone who is unbiased, like a child counsellor. Note that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/online-child-therapy.htm\"> kids can also have therapy over Zoom or Teams<\/a>, if for one reason or other getting in to a therapy office is too challenging.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Worried about your children and stress?
