And is it true that discomfort can be in the name of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why you might already know about it<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Heard a friend waxing lyrical about the benefits of showering in<\/strong> icy-cold water recently? Or noticed that the people you know are suddenly obsessed with HIIT (high-intensity interval training)?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Perhaps you have heard about &#8216;Freeze With Fear&#8217;, the new<\/strong> BBC series hosted by Wim Hof, an adventurer known as the Iceman. Or you&#8217;ve even watched as he challenges celebrities to brave freezing temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>These practices are all based<\/strong> around the concept or hormetic stress.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">What is hormetic stress?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In a nutshell, it&#8217;s a short burst of intense stress designed to make you feel better. If you\u2019re<\/strong> already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\">feeling stressed out<\/a>, it might seem counterintuitive to place your body under more stress. On the face of it, stepping under a freezing cold shower or getting sweaty during a high intensity workout might not seem that appealing, but it\u2019s said to provide physical, mental, and emotional benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7520385\/\"><span class=\"s2\">2020 paper<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong> explains that,<\/strong>\u201cHormetic stressors [are] acute intermittent stressors of moderate intensity [that] produce stress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilience<\/a>, the ability for quick recovery, and possibly rejuvenation of cells and tissues.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">In other words, exposing ourselves to these short periods of stress is said to make our bodies stronger and more resilient at a cellular level, restore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\">balance<\/a>, and help us adapt to challenging circumstances with more ease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17964227\/\"><span class=\"s5\">study on ageing<\/span><\/a>, for example,<\/strong> found hormetic stress increased our tolerance for stress, as well as our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\"> ability to adapt and cope<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125891\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125891\" class=\" wp-image-125891\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tim-wildsmith-Xk8wUSX9ZiE-unsplash-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"hormetic stressors\" width=\"358\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tim-wildsmith-Xk8wUSX9ZiE-unsplash-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tim-wildsmith-Xk8wUSX9ZiE-unsplash-500x374.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tim-wildsmith-Xk8wUSX9ZiE-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-125891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Tim Wildsmith for Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Examples of hormetic stress<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Some examples of hormetic stress include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">intermittent fasting<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">ice baths<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">cold showers\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">saunas<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">hypoxic breathing practices<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">high-intensity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">workouts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Hormetic or just extreme stress?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Hormetic stress isn\u2019t about<\/strong> indulging in risky behaviour or putting yourself in danger<strong>.<\/strong> It differs from extreme stress, because it\u2019s supposed to be mild to moderate.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">While extreme stressors often involve a real threat and can be detrimental to your physical and mental health, hormetic stress is about finding safe and controlled ways to challenge your body in a bid to feel better overall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s also important to remember that hormetic stress practices aren\u2019t something you should be doing for a prolonged period<\/strong> of time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The actual definition of hormetic is helpful to know here, it&#8217;s<\/strong> &#8220;the beneficial effects of a treatment that at a higher intensity is harmful\u201d. It may help you cope with more severe stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2248601\/\"><span class=\"s2\">2009 research paper,<\/span><\/a> <\/span><span class=\"s1\">exposing yourself to moderate stressors could help you more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">effectively manage more extreme stress<\/a>, whether that\u2019s a looming deadline or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/my-job-is-killing-me-losing-the-will-to-live.htm\">crushing workload<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The authors explain that hormetic stress triggers the activation of hormetic pathways in the brain that help neurons cope with more severe stress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You might compare it to working out at the gym. The more you expose your muscles<\/strong> to stress, the better they become at handling that stress. They get stronger and able to deal with heavier strains over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">2. In fact, prolonged stress can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burn-out-syndrome.htm\">burnout<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you\u2019re adding hormetic stress practices to your health toolkit, it\u2019s<\/strong> important to keep time in mind. Don&#8217;t try to outdo your class instructor by going home and doing additional HIIT, for example. Or overload your schedule with too many hormetic activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/easy-ways-to-be-mindful.htm\">mindful<\/a> about how you feel when completing these activities and feel free to take a break or stop completely if it feels like too much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Consider how much stress you\u2019re already under.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Layering extra stress on top of<\/strong> prolonged, severe, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">frequent stress<\/a> may not be helpful.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Be honest with yourself about how much you\u2019re realistically able to take on right now. If it feels like too much, it probably is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And don&#8217;t feel you have to do hormetic stress practices just because<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friends<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a> are. If you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">suffering from anxiety<\/a> and feel you must convert to cold showers as your friends are, it might not be the time. Tackle the root cause of your stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Hormetic practices to ease tension can only go so far.<\/strong> If you\u2019re under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">intense, prolonged stress<\/a> it may be worthwhile to consider the source of your stress and create a plan to overcome it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Sick of endlessly feeling stressed?
