Not to mention the expanding groups of digital nomads in various parts of the world. But what happens when we pack our bags and return (for whatever reason) to our initial home country? Can we end up with &#8216;reverse culture shock&#8217;?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">What is culture shock?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">According to the website of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukcisa.org.uk\/Information--Advice\/Studying--living-in-the-UK\/Reverse-culture-shock\">UK Council for International Student Affairs<\/a>, <span class=\"s3\">culture shock<\/span> can affect anyone. The cause of culture shock can be the new environment, climate, culture, people, and language. It can also arise from contributing factors like being away from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\">family<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friends<\/a> and familiar surroundings.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">The Council speaks about a U-curve model of 5 stages.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Honeymoon:<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> excitement with the new place, enjoying the differences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Distress<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\">: feelings of confusion and isolation or inadequateness, as we are getting more familiar with the culture, and realise our safety net is not so close.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Reintegration:<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\"> feelings of anger<\/a> and frustration, up to hostile feelings towards the new culture, this is a healthy stage of re-owning and reconnecting to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">original values<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Autonomy:<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"> as our experiences of the new culture expands, we feel more comfortable, and we have more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">skills to cope<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p11\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Independence<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\">: we can value the differences and similarities, and we can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/reach-your-full-potential.htm\">reach our full potential<\/a> dealing with most situations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">And what is reverse culture shock?<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_125955\" style=\"width: 392px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125955\" class=\"wp-image-125955\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/megan-nixon-QZPGeuJ2AIY-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"reverse culture shock\" width=\"382\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/megan-nixon-QZPGeuJ2AIY-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/megan-nixon-QZPGeuJ2AIY-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/megan-nixon-QZPGeuJ2AIY-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/megan-nixon-QZPGeuJ2AIY-unsplash-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/megan-nixon-QZPGeuJ2AIY-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 382px) 100vw, 382px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-125955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Megan Nixon for Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Reverse culture shock is feeling a similar pattern of emotions when we return to our home country after an extended time abroad.\u00a0 Suddenly, it is what we used to know that feels foreign and leaves us feeling out of place. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>You adapted to another culture, now you have to re-adapt to the old one.<\/strong> <\/span>According to a book on reverse culture shock,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.craigstorti.com\/the-art-of-coming-home-craig-storti-book\"><em>The Art of Coming Home\u00a0<\/em>by Craig Storti<\/a>, you might also experience four different stages than you see in regular culture shock. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Criticality\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; You may suddenly have a lot of criticisms of your own country, and feel frustrated and impatient with others. And you might constantly compare the positive things about where you were living with the worst things about your home country.<\/li>\n<li><b>Marginality\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity<\/a> might be less normal and mainstream now you understand more about the world at large. You might feel you no longer fit in.<\/li>\n<li><b>Overexertion\/Exhaustion\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; Everything can seem to take a lot of energy, even small things, as you readjust.<\/li>\n<li><b>Resistance\/Withdrawal\/Self-Doubt\/Depression\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; The more you see the flaws in the culture you used to just accept, the more you might resist adapting to it.\u00a0 It might feel easier to withdraw, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nostalgia-good-or-bad.htm\">live in your memories<\/a> or create fantasies of your other life abroad. This can all lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mild-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why am I experiencing reverse culture shock and my friend isn&#8217;t?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>It&#8217;s a personal experience. And according to the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/2009-2017.state.gov\/m\/fsi\/tc\/c56075.htm\"><span class=\"s3\">US Department of State<\/span><\/a>, the intensity of our re-entry experience can depend on additional factors. These include\u00a0 if we willingly decided to move back home or were forced, how long we were away, how different the other culture was, and also how old we are.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>It is also a question of how our home countries changed while we were away.<\/strong> In today\u2019s world, buildings, shops and public spaces are transforming rapidly. We might feel like we are not even in the same place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plus, we might be in a difficult transition period that doesn&#8217;t help.<\/strong> For example, if we have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/multigenerational-households.htm\">live with the in-laws<\/a> before our new place to live is ready.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">When what has changed is&#8230; you\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_125957\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125957\" class=\"wp-image-125957 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4016522-e1660584118492-400x318.jpg\" alt=\"reentry anxiety\" width=\"400\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4016522-e1660584118492-400x318.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4016522-e1660584118492-500x397.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-4016522-e1660584118492.jpg 524w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-125957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Karolina Grabowska for Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>Another important element in why we can feel ill at ease returning home is that we ourselves <\/strong>have changed during our time abroad. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">Our values<\/a>, our openness to other cultures, our tastes, etc., can make us feel very different from the people we left behind that we once shared so much with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>There is an interesting <a href=\"https:\/\/www8.gsb.columbia.edu\/cbs-directory\/sites\/cbs-directory\/files\/publications\/The%2520Shortest%2520Path%2520to%2520Oneself%2520Leads%2520Around%2520the%2520World%2520-%2520Living%2520Abroad%2520Increases%2520Self-Concept%2520Clarity%2520%255BOBHDP%255D.pdf\"><span class=\"s3\"> study<\/span><\/a> investigating how living abroad influences our self-concept.<\/strong> While the study only looked at those on overseas MBA programs, it did find an interesting set of data showing that when we live abroad it allows us to reflect on our own values and beliefs. The result is that we have a clearer, more stable, and lasting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\">sense of self<\/a>. This then lead to a stronger sense of what participants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">wanted their career to be<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><strong>Interestingly, this self clarity came with time. If you travel quickly<\/strong> from place to place this benefit is unlikely, it was more common in those who were in a place for three or more years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">How can reverse culture shock affect you?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>More research needs to be done, especially as most studies to date have been done on students. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1877129713001640\">often quoted study<\/a> looked at American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/student-stress-what-is-it.htm\">student<\/a> pharmacists returning from an 8-week placement in Kenya.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The study found that some of the students experienced \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">anxiety<\/a>, trouble in school, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">relationship difficulties<\/a> on their return. Participants reported that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-well-do-you-know-me.htm\">felt misunderstood<\/a> by people who had never had such an experience, and upset with American wealth.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">On the other side of the coin, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/2158244020970555\">a more recent study<\/a> on PhD students returning to Saudi Arabia from the States <strong>found that participants had <\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><strong>internal conflict and developed negative feelings toward their home country.<\/strong> They often dreamt about leaving their country again.<\/span><span class=\"s2\">The study also revealed that if your home country has difficult bureaucracy or is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">financial stress<\/a>, these uneasy feelings can be stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">5 tips to overcome the effects of reverse culture shock<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">There are some things we can do to overcome the stressful feelings of reverse culture shock, even before returning home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s6\">1. Keep in touch while abroad.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s5\">If we stay in touch with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-of-opinion.htm\">friends<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dysfunctional-family-help.htm\">family<\/a>, and follow the events in our home country, we will feel more connected when we return. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s5\">2. Keep the memories alive.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s5\">Bring something back from the country you visited.\u00a0 Cook the food, have something representing their culture, listen to music from there, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s5\">3. Find groups where you can share the experiences<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s5\">Sharing experiences with people who went through similar times can help, as they understand what you lived through. In yet another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0147176714001199?via%253Dihub\"><span class=\"s7\">study on American students<\/span><\/a>, it was concluded that after returning home from abroad those who had communication with peers who had intercultural experiences as well felt more at ease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s5\">4. Help others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s5\">Get involved with the community you now find yourself in again. Look around if there are opportunities to volunteer at organisations that support intercultural experiences. Or host\/guide someone from abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s5\">5. Look at your country with a fresh eye.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p15\"><span class=\"s5\">Explore your country with a new eye. Appreciate its values and beauty, be a tourist.
