Call the Samaritans 24-7 at 116 123.\u00a0 If you\u2019re in danger of hurting yourself or someone else, contact 999 for emergency services or go straight to A&amp;E. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">What is suicidal ideation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">According to the <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/how-we-can-help\/if-youre-worried-about-someone-else\/myths-about-suicide\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Samaritans<\/span><\/a>, 1 in 5 individuals have thought about suicide at some point in their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Suicidal ideation is a fancy way to describe<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\">suicidal thinking<\/a> and ideas.\u00a0<\/span>The term was created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-counselling-psychologist.htm\">psychologists<\/a> to try to pinpoint and research how suicidal thinking works. But<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-suicide.htm\"> there isn&#8217;t a typical suicide victim<\/a>, and there isn&#8217;t &#8216;typical&#8217; suicidal thinking, either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">So <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33351435\/\">not all researchers agree<\/a> on what does and doesn&#8217;t fit under &#8216;ideation&#8217;. Contemplating, wishing for, or being<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/death-anxiety-fear-of-death.htm\">preoccupied with death <\/a>and ending your life is ideation. But some want to include suicidal planning under the term, while other psychologists protest it is a different category entirely, as it comes with far greater risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Passive vs active ideation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><b>To clarify this confusion ideation is <\/b><strong>sometimes divided into <\/strong>&#8216;passive&#8217; or &#8216;active&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Passive suicidal ideation<\/strong> is when you\u2019re having thoughts of suicide but with no actual plans to act on it, like fantasies of going to sleep and never waking up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Active suicidal ideation<\/b> is when you have some level of intent to act on such thoughts and may have created a plan to carry them out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why does suicidal thinking matter?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Suffering from passive suicidal ideation does not alone mean you will ever try to<\/strong> take your own life.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>A 2021 global<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18245022\/\">World Health Organisation study<\/a> that interviewed over 85 thousand subjects found\u00a0 that two thirds of those who deal with suicidal ideation never make a single attempt at taking their life.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But ideation certainly does raise your risk of suicide and should\u00a0 be taken seriously. This is particularly true if it&#8217;s your first year of having suicidal thoughts, or if you have a mood or impulse control disorder, factors the same study found elevated one&#8217;s risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>By recognising you have a problem with passive ideation you can learn<\/strong> the warning signs that it is starting for you, and take note if it has arrived with other symptoms that put you at risk of moving towards &#8216;active&#8217; ideation (more on that below). Some people have a mind that is caught in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">black and white thinking<\/a> due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>, and their mind goes to suicidal ideation in the face of any kind of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"> life stress<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For many, though, ideation is triggered by<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-overwhelmed-with-life.htm\">feeling overwhelmed<\/a> by life and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">struggling to cope<\/a>.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> This can happen if we are facing things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">financial difficulties<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-loved-one.htm\">losing a loved one<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\"> health issues<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/general-adaptation-syndrome.htm\">prolonged stress<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Suicidal ideation can also be associated with mental health disorders.<\/strong> Unsurprisingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34045859\">research shows<\/a> it is frequently experienced in those with major depressive disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And ideation is a symptom of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-disorder-treatment-therapy.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>, with up to ten per cent of those who have BPD unfortunately going on to successfully act on their thoughts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other factors that may increase the risk of experiencing suicidal ideation<\/strong> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">if you have attempted suicide in the past <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">substance abuse and addiction<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">struggling with extreme<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/male-loneliness.htm\"> loneliness <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">having experienced significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">trauma or abuse<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-bullying.htm\">victim of bullying<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>socioeconomic inequalities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">*Only recently started experiencing ideation, and also started taking a new medication? Note that there are several medications that can lead to ideation, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-medications-uk.htm\">ADHD meds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/menopause-and-mental-health.htm\">HRT<\/a>, corticosteroids, birth control, and seizure medications.\u00a0 If you are concerned it&#8217;s important to talk to your doctor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">What can I do if I\u2019m experiencing suicidal ideation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So what can you do if this is you, and you tend to often think about death and ending your life?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\">1. Identify triggers.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Try paying close attention to any potential triggers. Is it an environment? A person? A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">habit<\/a> you are indulging in? Start to question the choices that cause suicidal thinking and consider what other choices you could make instead. If you don&#8217;t seem to have triggers and think your ideation might be part of a mental health disorder, it&#8217;s a good idea to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\">see a mental health professional for advice<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Find a healthy way to move through your thoughts.<\/h3>\n<p>This might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">free form journalling<\/a>, it might be talking to a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friend-or-counsellor.htm\"> trusted friend<\/a> or support group. A helpful coping tool can also be engaging in healthy activities that take you away from thinking entirely, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">spurts of intense exercise<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">practicing mindfulness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">2. You can talk to your GP who can refer you to therapy. Here in that UK the NHS often offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> which helps you manage your thinking. For faster access and greater choice of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychotherapeutic-approaches-the-main-schools-of-thought.htm\">what kind of therapy<\/a> you try, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/harleytherapy.com\/?utm_source=Harley%20Therapy%20Blog&amp;utm_content=Mid%20Post\">booking privately<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">3. Make a safety plan.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">A personal safety plan is a suggested tool to help keep you safe in times of distress or when you\u2019re experiencing suicidal thoughts.\u00a0 The steps of safety planning mean writing out your personal:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>warning signs (how to know you are feeling suicidal)<\/li>\n<li>coping strategies (things that take your mind off what&#8217;s upsetting you that you can do by yourself)<\/li>\n<li>people and settings that can provide healthy distraction<\/li>\n<li>who you can ask for help<\/li>\n<li>professionals you can contact in crisis (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-helpline.htm\">help lines<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>what you can do to make your environment safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Samaritans provide a free template<\/strong> for\u00a0 a safety plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/how-we-can-help\/if-youre-worried-about-someone-else\/supporting-someone-suicidal-thoughts\/creating-safety-plan\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Other important warning signs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong>Ideation is only one of the signs you are at risk for taking your life, and it&#8217;s important to pay<\/strong> attention to whether your thinking comes with other connected signs. These include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">feelings of entrapment\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">a sense of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">worthlessness<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">a deep sense of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">hopelessness<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling intense emotional pain\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>or total numbness and fatigue (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mild-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">withdrawing from loved ones or avoiding social interactions<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/my-job-is-killing-me-losing-the-will-to-live.htm\">losing interest in daily life<\/a> or the future<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">severe shifts in mood<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">an increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\">substance use<\/a> or misuse<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">engaging in impulsive or risky behavi<\/span><span class=\"s1\">our<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">looking at methods of suicide.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Feelings of entrapment are particularly important to pay attention to, if new research is anything to go by.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23855989\/\">British study carried out across four years that looked at repeat suicidal behaviour,<\/a> for example, ranked feelings of entrapment as a higher risk factor than ideation and depression.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Useful resources that can help if you are feeling suicidal<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stayingsafe.net\/home\">Stay Safe<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> provides guidance and tools to create a safety plan to help with emotional distress and self-harm, including online tutorial videos and templates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/information-support\/side-by-side-our-online-community\/\">Side By Side<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> is a supportive online community by Mind where you can connect, listen, and share your experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/\">Samaritans<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> is a free 24 hour helpline providing a one-to-one listening service for anyone struggling or experiencing emotional distress. <b>Call<\/b> 116 123\u00a0(free from any phone).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giveusashout.org\/\">Shout<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> offers a confidential 24\/7 text service for those in crisis and in need of immediate help.
