Is it consuming enough that you start to feel inadequate when around others? It could be a sign of an inferiority complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">What is an inferiority complex? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The term was coined in 1907 by psychologist Alfred Alder,<\/strong> in his theory of individual psychology. It&#8217;s officially defined as &#8220;a basic feeling of inadequacy and insecurity, deriving from actual or imagined physical or psychological deficiency.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">In other words, an inferiority complex is the persistent and intense sense of feeling less than, often resulting in the belief that one is inferior to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>According to Adler&#8217;s theory, we have all felt a sense of inferiority at some point.<\/strong> Which can be beneficial, as it can motivate you to seek self-improvement and help you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-goals.htm\">accomplish your goals<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">While it&#8217;s not uncommon to experience these feelings of &#8216;less than&#8217; from time to time, those with an inferiority complex aren&#8217;t just having a momentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-confidence-how-much-of-a-problem-is-it-really.htm\">lapse of confidence<\/a>. They struggle with chronically low self-esteem to the extent it is overwhelming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The Two types of Inferiority Complexes <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Adler also claimed that there were <strong>two types of inferiority complexes<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Primary inferiority<\/strong> <strong>complex<\/strong> starts during childhood and is due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learned-helplessness.htm\">feeling helpless<\/a> or being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-sibling-rivalry-stop.htm\">compared to others, such as siblings<\/a>. Sometimes, the effects of this can be carried into adulthood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Secondary inferiority complex<\/strong>, on the other hand, occurs when you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">unable to meet your personal goals<\/a> as an adult. Individuals with this complex often have a false sense of confidence, believing they are better than others, despite the lack of evidence to support their beliefs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Adler argues that these feelings of superiority can <\/strong>also\u00a0 be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">coping mechanism<\/a> for those that feel inferior. As a way of hiding deep insecurities, a person may exaggerate their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\"> sense of worth<\/a> to feel better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">How can I tell if I have an inferiority complex?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>An inferiority complex can present itself in polarising ways. Sometimes you might <\/strong>withdraw from people you perceive to be more accomplished. Other times you can find yourself behaving competitively to overcompensate for certain insecurities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">The common signs you may experience in your personal and professional life include:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling down about yourself <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">suffering from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\">lack of confidence<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-be-less-sensitive.htm\">extremely sensitive<\/a> to criticism (and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/giving-compliments.htm\">compliments<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">always<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\"> comparing yourself to others<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/agoraphobia-and-social-anxiety.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">avoiding social situations<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">often<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\"> feeling guilty<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed<\/a> about your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">choices<\/a> and actions<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling the need to downplay your accomplishments and achievements <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">becoming nervous and anxious around other people<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">a tendency to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attention-seeking-behaviour.htm\">seek attention<\/a> and validation <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/its-all-my-fault-self-blame.htm\">finding faults in yourself<\/a> or others<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\"><span class=\"s1\">afraid to be assertive.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Why do I have this feeling?<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_126362\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126362\" class=\" wp-image-126362\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-maria-eduarda-loura-magalha\u0303es-5145453-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"inferiority complex\" width=\"268\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-maria-eduarda-loura-magalha\u0303es-5145453-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-maria-eduarda-loura-magalha\u0303es-5145453-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-maria-eduarda-loura-magalha\u0303es-5145453.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-126362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Maria Eduarda for Pexels<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Going back to Alder&#8217;s theory, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">childhood experiences<\/a> can play<\/strong> a large role in feeling inferior. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">Constant criticism<\/a> from parents or lack of praise can often affect a child&#8217;s view of the world and damage self-esteem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Modern research shows that <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>s<\/strong><\/span><strong>ocial and cultural pressures<\/strong> to reach certain milestones can also prompt a lack of confidence in one\u2019s ability.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">According to the <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/about-us\/news\/60-young-people-unable-cope-due-pressure-succeed\"><span class=\"s3\">Mental Health Foundation<\/span><\/a>, 60% of young people feel so much pressure to succeed that they feel <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">unable to cope<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/social-media-body-image.htm\"><strong>use of social media<\/strong><\/a> can also play into feeling inferior. A 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30507215\/\"><span class=\"s4\">study<\/span><\/a> revealed that there was a high correlation between scrolling through your feed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depressive symptoms<\/a>, such as feeling inferior. You may be exposed to highly edited posts, which can increase unfavourable comparisons and make you feel dissatisfied with yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Is it really a big deal? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you become too concerned with <\/strong>being judged or how you compare to others, it can affect how you interact with your loved ones. It may even lead you to isolating yourself to avoid feeling worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Similarly, the same concerns might creep into your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/working-from-home-mental-health.htm\">work life<\/a>, affecting your overall performance. It can cause you to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\"> lose focus<\/a> and may prevent future growth over the fear of not being skilled enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4193149\/#ref2\">Research<\/a> also shows that <strong>feelings of inferiority are significantly linked to depression<\/strong>. It can even lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">poor quality of sleep<\/a>, and and increase the risk of experiencing a sleeping disorder such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\">insomnia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">How can I manage my constant sense of inferiority?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So then what can you do if this is you?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\">1. Recognise your strengths.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0You may be putting too much attention on your flaws, triggering the onset of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">negative self- beliefs<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Jotting down your personal strengths is a great way to balance your self-image, reminding yourself of your best qualities when needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">2. Set smaller goals.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Sometimes, our deep-rooted feeling of inadequacy can stem from having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-expectations.htm\">high expectations<\/a> or setting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-goals.htm\">unrealistic goals<\/a>. That can hinder your progress and prevent you from trying new things. <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">Setting yourself small, manageable goals<\/a> can help you overcome your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-critical-signs.htm\">inner critic<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">3. Change the way you compare yourself to others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you tend to put yourself beneath others when doing so? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">If so, try to untangle your sense of worth from the thoughts you have. For example, if you admire someone&#8217;s confidence, don\u2019t automatically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assume<\/a> they\u2019re better than you. Instead, you can use this as inspiration to work on a quality you&#8217;d like to improve on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a04.Get to the root of feeling.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Identifying the root of your complex is the most effective way to manage your feelings of inferiority. It&#8217;s likely that it could be traced back to an unpleasant event as far back as even your childhood. This requires you to explore what areas of your personal or professional life make you feel less accomplished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It&#8217;s worth considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> which focuses on helping you to challenge any<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\"> limiting beliefs<\/a> you hold about yourself.
