If that&#8217;s you, it&#8217;s time to look at what might be causing you summer depression.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Mood killers that lead to summer depression\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>What summertime stressors should you watch out for? And how can you best handle them to ensure sunny days ahead, both weather and mood wise?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1. Comparing yourself to others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sitting in your hot city flat roasting away, while looking at snapshots of your friends others next to their new pool or vacation home? You might start to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-critical-signs.htm\">criticise yourself<\/a> or tell yourself you are a failure. This can trigger<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> poor self-esteem<\/span> <\/a>and its resulting low moods.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action Tip:<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social media is now proven to lower moods<\/a><\/span>. So monitor your time on it. Learn how to practice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">present moment awareness<\/a><\/span>, and try <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/gratitude-tips.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gratitude<\/a><\/span>, where you make time each day to notice the things that are actually going okay for you. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>2. Lack of routine.<\/h3>\n<p>Schedules that kept you moving forward and feeling organised can go out the window in the summer. Along with regular meal times and sleeping schedules. While for some people the freedom this brings is exhilarating, for others it can cause <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stress and anxiety.<\/a><\/span> Or make them feel so disorganised they start criticising themselves.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action Tip:<\/strong> While a weekly schedule might not be realistic, try making a new schedule nightly for just the following day. Integrate as much information as you have available. As well as staving off summer depression it will do wonders for any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleep problems<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>3. Your older ones are perhaps back from university for the summer. And your spouse is booking time off&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whereas during the rest of the year you were by yourself some of the day,<\/strong> you are now constantly surrounded by people. For extroverts this might be heaven, but for some of us the constant company can drain us or leave us overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action Tip<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learn-how-to-delegate.htm\">Delegate<\/a>. Let others help with household chores, meal preparation, and organising days out. Then use the time this creates to spend some time alone. Consider a daily <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-psychotherapy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mindfulness meditation<\/span> <\/a>practise where you go within &#8211; the one place nobody else can follow you. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>4. Challenged boundaries.<\/h3>\n<p>For those of us who struggle to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> set boundaries<\/span> <\/a>on a good day, summer can present more challenges than usual. It&#8217;s not just the kids begging for permission to do things, it&#8217;s the invites to parties and events you don&#8217;t actually want to go, to but feel to guilty saying no to.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em>Action Tip: Read our article on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to be better at saying no<\/a><\/span>. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. Body confidence issues.<\/h3>\n<p>For obvious reasons it&#8217;s the season when body issues are at their worst, for both women and men.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action Tip<\/strong>: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bibliotherapy-read-yourself-better.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bibliotherapy<\/a><\/span> is a great place to begin &#8211; there are many books on the market about how to begin the journey of feeling more at home in your skin. If your body image issue has your self worth so low it&#8217;s stopping you from going out and living your life, do consider <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/low-self-esteem-counselling-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low self-esteem counselling<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>6. Unhealthy eating patterns.<\/h3>\n<p>Forget the myth that summer is when we all naturally slim down. Instead, many of us slide into unhealthy eating habits. Which then means we slide right into summer depression.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It&#8217;s too easy to claim that the heat makes cooking unbearable and call for a takeaway. And then there are the many barbecues, backyard parties, and trips for ice cream, or the &#8216;doesn&#8217;t count on vacation&#8217; mentality if you take a trip away. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>It is also a season where<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\"> binge eating<\/a> becomes almost socially acceptable,<\/strong> with many not eating much in the day but overdoing it when things cool down.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Action Tip: Keep a food diary or use a tracker app like My Fitness Pal that lets you buddy up with other users (social support is great when it comes to staying on track with healthy choices). If you feel like an old <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/eating-disorders-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eating disorder<\/a><\/span> is being triggered, seek a support group or see a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/eating-disorder-counselling-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">counsellor who specialises in eating disorders.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>7. But for many of us it instead fizzles into a lot of sitting around, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">drinking more alcohol than usual<\/span>,<\/a> and again, hitting that ice cream.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Does self care really matter<\/span><\/a>? It is now recognised as so connected to psychological health that the NHS has pages devoted to it &#8211; so absolutely.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action Tip:<\/strong> Set <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">small and achievable goals<\/span> <\/a>daily around self-care. Schedule in a self-care activity weekly you can do with the family, such as hiking. And also schedule in a few hours weekly just for yourself.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>8. Money worries.<\/h3>\n<p>With the kids wanting distractions, you can feel pressured to spend more money in the summer. Add in a vacation away and the budget can be blown. Money can also cause tension in your relationship with your partner if one of you is more lax with spending than the other. And if it all ends in being in the red, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/lwren-scott-debt-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debt is actually a common trigger of depression.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action Tip<\/strong>: Don&#8217;t underestimate the importance of talking with your partner about money. Learn the signs of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debt depression<\/a><\/span> &#8211; if you recognise yourself in them, don&#8217;t hesitate to seek help. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>9. Vacation stress.<\/h3>\n<p>If your summer months involve a trip away, this brings its own set of stressors. You, your partner, and your children might all have a different idea of where to vacation, causing fights. And the logistics and expenses can leave you worried or suffering anxiety, especially if you are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-a-perfectionist.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">perfectionist<\/span> <\/a>or control freak.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action tip:<\/strong> It&#8217;s the C word again -learn <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to communicate even when under stress<\/a><\/span>. Let everyone be a part of organising the trip so you don&#8217;t feel entirely responsible. There is also always the thought of splitting up on different holidays if not everyone agrees &#8211; the time apart can actually be good for a relationship and mean one-on-one time for parents with children that rarely get it.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>10. Birthday blues.<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a summer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/birthday-blues-milestones-affect-mental-health.htm\"> birthday and aren&#8217;t comfortable with ageing<\/a>? This can be enough to trigger a slump or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/midlife-crisis-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">midlife crisis<\/a><\/span>. Summer is connected to youth and beauty, so summertime birthdays can be particularly difficult on this front.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Action Tip:<\/strong> Try the power of a good, quick dose of negative thinking combined with<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> journalling<\/a><\/span>. Sit down and write out all the thoughts and feelings you really have about ageing &#8211; you can rip it up when done and nobody has to see it. Also take time to look at the negative side of being young, too, to gain some <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">perspective<\/a><\/span>. It&#8217;s estimated that up to 60,000 people in the UK alone suffer this &#8216;reverse SAD&#8217; each year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Thinking over the last few summers, can you can see a pattern? That you find yourself feeling a bit low as spring turns into summer, and feeling increasingly miserable as the hot months progress? You might have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seasonal-affective-disorder-in-summer.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">summer-induced seasonal affective disorder (SAD)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Should you get help for summer depression?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Depression can sometimes be a gift, in that it brings to the<\/strong> surface all the things that have been annoying us or not really going right for us. Working with a therapist when such issues rise up can help you identify and deal with what is bothering you for once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>And if it&#8217;s mild depression, choosing to take the support of a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a><\/span> now might mean that you avoid it turning into more serious depression in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Have we missed a common summer stressor that can lead to low moods or even depression?
