Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s true we all experience negative thoughts when <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">life gets challenging<\/a><\/span> and we feel overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p><em>But perhaps the thoughts that do the most damage aren&#8217;t the big despairing ones. But the constant stream of negative thoughts you might be having on a daily basis without even realising it. <\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Are negative thoughts really a big deal?<\/h2>\n<p>Constant <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negative thinking<\/a><\/span> can be so ingrained that we don&#8217;t even notice we are doing it, unless we take the time to listen through a practise like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mindfulness<\/a><\/span>. <strong>Because we are used to negative thinking, it&#8217;s easy to assume it&#8217;s therefore benign. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But negative thinking leads to negative emotions, leads to negative choices in life (known as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-distortions-cbt.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negative thinking loop<\/a><\/span>). <strong>So the more negative your thoughts, the more likely it is you aren&#8217;t taking actions that lead to the life you actually want.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And negative thinking also leads to low moods and often <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of the main reasons for this is that negative thinking creates a perfect environment for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low self-esteem<\/a><\/span> to flourish.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Negative thinking patterns that damage your self-esteem<\/h2>\n<p>Once you start to listen to your thoughts, these are the most common esteem-lowering negative thoughts you will likely catch first:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_14069\" style=\"width: 405px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15458549691_0f30779fcd-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14069\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14069\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14069\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15458549691_0f30779fcd-1-395x400.jpg\" alt=\"negative thoughts \" width=\"395\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15458549691_0f30779fcd-1-395x400.jpg 395w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15458549691_0f30779fcd-1-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15458549691_0f30779fcd-1-20x20.jpg 20w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15458549691_0f30779fcd-1.jpg 494w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 395px) 100vw, 395px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/128431605@N05\/15458549691\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">John Hain<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>putting yourself down (you look fat, you are too slow)<\/li>\n<li>negative<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> core beliefs<\/a><\/span> (I&#8217;m no good, I&#8217;m not as smart as other people, I&#8217;ll never win)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">comparing yourself to others<\/span><\/a> (I&#8217;ll never be as good as him at this).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The secret ways negative thoughts effect esteem<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Not all forms of negative thinking are as obvious as the above.<\/strong> Some of the ones that can erode your esteem the most are far more insidious, such as the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. Blaming yourself when something that isn&#8217;t your fault happens.<\/h3>\n<p>It sounds like, &#8220;if only I had of come home five minutes earlier the robbery wouldn&#8217;t have happened&#8221;. &#8220;If only I had of thought to put better treads on my child&#8217;s boots they wouldn&#8217;t have had a terrible fall on ice&#8221;. You might try to pass this sort of thinking off as &#8216;logic&#8217;, but it&#8217;s sort of a fancy way of saying <em>you are not smart and you only mess up. <\/em>Would you tell a friend that &#8216;if only they had of been smarter their partner wouldn&#8217;t have left them&#8217;? Probably not. And it&#8217;s just as illogic.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Always anticipating the worst outcome.<\/h3>\n<p>This sounds like, &#8220;this presentation is bound to go badly&#8221;, &#8220;there is no way this blind date will like me&#8221;, or &#8220;I&#8217;m sure to fail my drivers test&#8221;. You might smugly tell yourself that it&#8217;s just a &#8216;tactic&#8217; you use to keep calm and that by expecting the worst you are never disappointed in life. But you are at the same time training your brain with what is behind such thoughts &#8211; <em>I never do well. <\/em>And your esteem will, with time, take a hit.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Giving yourself many inner &#8216;pep talks&#8217;.<\/h3>\n<p>This sounds like, &#8220;You can do better. Why get 9 out of 10, go for 10, you can do it!&#8221; or, &#8220;Be a winner not a failure!&#8221;. You can trick yourself into thinking you are &#8216;boosting your<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-confidence-how-much-of-a-problem-is-it-really.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> confidence<\/a><\/span>&#8216;. But are you? Doubting others.<\/h3>\n<p>It sounds like, &#8220;\u201cThey will never like me the way I am\u201d, or \u201cI can&#8217;t trust them to be there for me\u201d, or \u201cI am sure they are not as nice as they seem\u201d. But doubt is often a way of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">psychologically projecting<\/span> <\/a>onto others our own worries about ourselves. We are really asking, <em>can you like yourself the way you are, can you trust yourself, and do you see yourself as a nice person?<\/em> (For more, read our piece on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/doubt-in-relationships.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doubt in relationships<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<h3>5. Shame.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Shame<\/span> <\/a>might seem like something that would so obviously knock anyone&#8217;s sense of worth that it should be in the previous section about obvious negative thinking patterns. But the thing with shame is that it is perhaps the most hidden of difficult emotions, so much so that we often don&#8217;t hear it and have to dig behind other thoughts to get at it. Shame sounds like very disparaging and extreme statements about your self, like, &#8220;I&#8217;m a monster&#8221; and &#8220;I&#8217;m not a good person&#8221; or &#8220;I don&#8217;t deserve to live&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>What do I do if my negative thinking is destroying my self-esteem?<\/h2>\n<p>There are ways you can begin to manage your negative thinking yourself, like educating yourself ( try our connected piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How Negative Thinking Sabotages Your Life<\/span> <\/a>) and trying <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-psychotherapy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mindfulness meditation<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s important to not discount the benefit of support when it comes to strong patterns of negative thinking. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a><\/span> is a short-term therapy that specialises in helping you notice and change your thinking patterns. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-based-cognitive-therapy-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mindfulness-based therapies<\/a><\/span> that help you get more in touch with your thoughts and feelings can also be helpful, as can any sort of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/services.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talk therapy<\/a><\/span> which all work to help you clarify your sense of self and see your worth.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Negative thoughts left you unable to cope?
