And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it can be even worse if that person is your boss.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>So why is it that conflict happens so often in the workplace? How much can dealing with difficult colleagues affect your mental health? And when should you really be worried?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Why difficult colleagues are everywhere<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Why is it that so many people act in complicated ways at work, anyway?<\/p>\n<h3>1. A workplace environment is by its very nature made for conflict.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Workplaces see many of spending our days with people we would not choose as friends otherwise. <\/strong>Not only might you see these people more than you see your loved ones, you are required to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">face challenges and stress<\/a> with them. And <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">we all break at some point under stress.<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s inevitable that in such a contrived environment things will not always go smoothly.<\/strong> No matter how much your company invests in team bonding and your emotional wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em><strong>What to do: <\/strong>Before <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blaming others<\/a><\/span>, consider if your colleagues really are your problem or it might be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-space-mental-health.htm\"> the environment itself<\/a>. Do you feel overwhelmed? Is this the right job for you? Are you perhaps just bored and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating drama<\/a><\/span> to make the time pass?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Review the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/combating-workplace-stress-executive-tips.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">key elements of stress management<\/a><\/span>, including <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self-care<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">better sleep<\/a><\/span>. And consider <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-and-therapy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mindfulness<\/a><\/span>, proven to lower <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manage-anxiety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anxiety<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Of course do learn <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the difference between stress and depression<\/a><\/span>, because the latter can require support.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>2. For example, in banking you will find many driven, money motivated sorts. But personalities, on the other hand, are bound to deviate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">People have different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-people-at-work.htm\">responses to stress<\/a>, and even different responses to success.<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong style=\"color: #800080;\">What to do<\/strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> \u2013 First of all, be sure that you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">know your own personality<\/a><\/span> and are not actually just<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> psychologically projecting<\/a><\/span> &#8211; i.e., putting your own traits onto others. Is it really you that is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difficult-employee.htm\">difficult employee<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Then learn<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> the power of perspective<\/a><\/span>. Too many of us assume that others see the world from our vantage point. Learning to understand others&#8217; viewpoints means you can understand them better. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And communication is always key \u2013 learning <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">how to communicate under stress<\/a><\/span> can be a priceless skill to invest in.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>3. An office can be a negative environment despite a focus on workplace wellbeing.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>No amount of employee perks can make up for the fact that <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/my-job-is-killing-me-losing-the-will-to-live.htm\">many people just don&#8217;t like their jobs.<\/a> This means that no matter how many free meals in the cafeteria, gym passes, or great lounge areas your company offers, you might be facing up to someone else&#8217;s moaning all day. Or even your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">internal negative soundtrack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">What to do: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn boundaries<\/a><\/span> if your colleagues are always dumping on you. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If it is you who are the moaner, ask yourself <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good questions<\/a><\/span>. Is it really the job you hate? Or are you using the job to hide the fact you are really not happy with other parts of your life? The more we are put in stressful situations or forced intimacy with others, the more likely it is that one of these patterns will be set off.<\/p>\n<p>It might just be that a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manage-anger-after-breakup.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent breakup<\/a><\/span> has your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">self-esteem<\/span> <\/a>at an all time low. So a throwaway joke about your wrinkled shirt has you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/pandemic-mental-health-issues.htm\">overreact<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or it might be that one of your colleagues, without you realising it? Drives you crazy because <\/strong>they have a similar personality to the parent figure you had the most issues with as a child. Perhaps, for example, they always tell you what to do and never appreciate your ideas, much like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-mother-wound-under-mothered.htm\">your mother<\/a> when you were a kid.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>What to do:<\/strong> Ideally, get to know who you are. This might be through <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bibliotherapy-read-yourself-better.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reading self help books<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journalling<\/a><\/span>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-i-need-counseling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seeing a counsellor<\/a><\/span>. The more you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">understand yourself<\/a>, the less likely you are to let others get to you. The more you can see them for themselves instead of through a lens of the past. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Other things that can help are to learn about things like<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> attachment theory<\/a><\/span>, which covers what happens if you don&#8217;t get enough attention as a child, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">childhood trauma.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-in-the-workplace.htm\">Some people in every workplace will be suffering from mental health issues<\/a>.<\/h3>\n<p>According to the mental health foundation, one in four people in the UK suffer from a mental health issue in the space of a year. Whether that is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><\/span>, an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anxiety disorder<\/a><\/span>, an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/eating-disorders-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eating disorder<\/a><\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleep problems<\/a><\/span>, or a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">personality disorder<\/a><\/span>, it means that 25% of your colleagues will be struggling at any given time. And there&#8217;s every chance it might even be you at some points.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>What to do:<\/strong>\u00a0Drop your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/handling-depression-stigma.htm\">stigmas around mental health issues<\/a> (including your own) by getting educated.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And try learning the art of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self-compassion<\/a><\/span>. It turns out that the more we can learn to cut ourselves some slack, the more we can give others<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\"> empathy<\/a> and understanding, too.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Worried your workplace is ruining your mental health?<\/h2>\n<p>Difficult relationships, regardless of the reason, can lead to stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anger issues<\/a><\/span>, and depression.
