Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m going to have a nervous breakdown\u201d might be something you&#8217;ve shouted dramatically while under duress, or even secretly worried about when life was just all a bit too much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But what is a nervous breakdown, really? And how do you know if you or someone you love is on their way towards one?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What is a nervous breakdown?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>It is important to understand that a nervous breakdown is not actually an officially recognised mental health diagnosis. <\/strong>It is presently just an umbrella term to describe a loose group of symptoms. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>A nervous breakdown does, however, inevitably involve <\/strong>other mental health conditions or disorders that are diagnosable. For others, month. It does not last forever, though, and <strong>with the right help you will be able to rebuild your life again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>How do I know if I am having a mental breakdown?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In general, a nervous breakdown is preceded by <\/strong>extreme stress and a combination of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><\/span> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety<\/span> <\/a>that leaves you feeling vulnerable. Your will also suffer from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negative thinking<\/a><\/span>, often obsessively so. You might also have a sense of being outside of reality, called &#8216;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-dissociative-disorder.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">disassociation<\/a><\/span>&#8216;. Their world might be crumbling about them over a period of weeks and they might be failing more and more to upkeep their social roles (work, friend, parent, leader) or acting strongly out of character in ways that confuse them.<\/p>\n<h4>Other related symptoms<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Accompanying symptoms of a mental breakdown <\/strong>can again include depression and anxiety, as well as the below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleep problems<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>muddy and confused thinking<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unexplainable aches and pains<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>dizziness<\/li>\n<li>paranoia<\/li>\n<li>feelings of panic<\/li>\n<li>lack of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self care<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>acting like a totally different person<\/li>\n<li>mood swings<\/li>\n<li>a feeling that you might be dying<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Related mental health conditions to a nervous breakdown<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A nervous breakdown often consists of a series of other mental health conditions colluding. For example, you might be<\/strong> depressed or suffer from anxiety, severe stress, and\/or sleeping problems, and then find yourself having a breakdown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Often, what seems a breakdown can be another diagnosable mental health issue in disguise<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>These can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>acute stress disorder<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>episodic panic attacks<\/strong> (if your breakdown seems to come and go and involves panic)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acute depression<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (if your breakdown doesn&#8217;t abate and you have very low moods)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">schizophrenia<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (if your breakdown comes with hallucinations)<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/ptsd-asd-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">post traumatic stress disorde<\/span><\/a>r <\/b>(if your breakdown has flashbacks)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>bipolar disorder<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>(if you feel great then have mini breakdowns)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>borderline personality disorder<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>(if you seem to breakdown often after breakups)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This is why it is so important to seek help if you feel you are having a nervous breakdown<\/strong> &#8211; you might discover you have another disorder as well that can improve greatly with the right treatment.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the recommended treatment for a mental breakdown?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_13530\" style=\"width: 451px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5432059925_e9daf687c9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13530\" class=\" wp-image-13530\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5432059925_e9daf687c9-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5432059925_e9daf687c9-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5432059925_e9daf687c9.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5432059925_e9daf687c9-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/johnonolan\/5432059925\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">John O&#8217;Nolan<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>It is absolutely possible to make a recovery from a breakdown<\/strong> and get back to your daily routine. Of course it can take time to get your life back on track.<\/p>\n<p>S<strong>ome even find that post nervous breakdown and seeking help, their life improves <\/strong>in ways they didn&#8217;t see as possible beforehand. You might find you know yourself better, have more compassion for yourself, or that a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">personality disorder<\/a><\/span> that gets diagnosed due to seeking help responds well to treatment and your life gets easier after years of struggle.<\/p>\n<p>While medication might be prescribed if your nervous breakdown is related to another mental health condition that it is known to alleviate, <strong>the most common treatment for a nervous breakdown is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/services.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">talking therapies<\/a><\/span> with a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a><\/span>. <\/strong>A therapist will help you get to the heart of what is causing you stress, provide warm understanding, as well as help you find coping methods that work for you.<\/p>\n<p>Many kinds of therapy can help, from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/psychodynamic-psychotherapy-and-counselling-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychodynamic psychotherapy<\/a><\/span>, which delves into the way your past drives your behaviours in the present, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/span> <\/a>which has a focus on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It can be very useful to also try relaxation techniques. Ones that are used by therapists but that you can try by yourself include<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-and-therapy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> mindfulness<\/span> <\/a>and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">progressive muscle relaxation<\/a><\/span>. Continuing with methods such as these can help you feel more relaxed on a daily basis, which is thought to make it far less likely you will have another breakdown in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things that can be helpful when recovering from a nervous breakdown can also include<\/strong> good self-care<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">, journaling,<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exercising<\/a><\/span>, and reading books that work to make you feel better (&#8216;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bibliotherapy-read-yourself-better.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bibliotherapy<\/a><\/span>&#8216;).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not try to go it alone if you are suffering from a mental breakdown.<\/strong> Aside from the support of a professional, some find support groups helpful, and others turn to the support of friends and loved ones they trust. There are also several mental health hotlines in the UK that can offer a friendly voice in times of need such as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Good Samaritans<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why me?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s important not to think there is something inherently wrong with you if you have a breakdown.<\/strong> While it has been found that some people might be more sensitive and genetically inclined to a nervous breakdown, and that a difficult childhood might have made you more sensitive to one, we all have our breaking point. With the right set of circumstances almost anyone would have a breakdown.
