Be honest about how you are feeling.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>A desire to be respectful and sensitive to the survivors, victims, and families of victims might mean you feel too embarrassed or selfish to admit you are feeling overwhelmed<\/strong> or in need of support merely as you were in the vicinity of an attack. But suppressing your anxiety and worries can mean they stay unresolved, growing in power or even triggering other, older anxieties you also haven&#8217;t dealt with, putting you at risk of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Would you tell them to &#8216;just be grateful they are fine&#8217; or to &#8216;get over it&#8217;, or would you be<\/strong> understanding and kind to them? Could you then try to treat yourself like you would this good friend?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t see this as selfish \u2013 it&#8217;s been found that the more we can practice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the art of self-compassion<\/a><\/span>, <\/strong>the more, not less, we then show<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> empathy<\/a><\/span> to others.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Learn to recognise negative thinking spirals.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Researchers have observed that one of the main psychological effects of terrorism on society at large is a rise in what is called &#8216;catastrophising&#8217;. <\/strong>A form of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> negative thinking<\/a> <\/span>(also known as a &#8216;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-distortions-cbt.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cognitive distortion<\/a><\/span>&#8216;),  catastrophising leaves you going over the details of the event again and again in your head, imagining the worst possible outcomes for the future, and feeling increasingly helpless. The result is that you are increased risk for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety disorders<\/span>,<\/a> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><\/span>, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low self-esteem<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work instead for a balanced view based on facts.<\/strong> What is the exact opposite view of the negative thought you just had, and between your negative thought and its opposite, is there an in-between ground that is closer to the truth?<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you feel your negative thinking and anxiety is out of control, consider ways to make the event more grounded in reality for you. Some Parisians, for example, found that a visit to the actual site<\/strong> of the attacks to light a candle and pay respects left them with a clearer perspective, feeling more able to process their feelings and get on with their lives.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Monitor your media intake. <\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_13629\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3508066424_356c229748.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13629\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3508066424_356c229748-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3508066424_356c229748-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3508066424_356c229748.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bettyx1138\/3508066424\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">bettyx1138<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yes, the internet means we can keep updated with what we need to know when crisis hits, and can easily access worried friends and family.<\/p>\n<p>But it also means <strong>in our panic to know all that is happening, we are privy to an onslaught of media that includes fear mongering and opinions peddled as fact, <\/strong>creating<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> distorted thinking<\/a><\/span> and yet more <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manage-anxiety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anxiety<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Be tactical. Can you choose a reliable news source instead of reading all of them? Cut back on social media until you are feeling more steady? Use a timer to monitor usage? Ask a trusted friend to only fill you in on what is necessary, and take a break entirely even?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It can pay to ask yourself why you are online all the time. Has the event possibly left you<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> feeling lonely<\/a><\/span>? This is actually a normal response to trauma. If you are fighting loneliness, is there a more positive way to find connection, such as reaching out to neighbours, or attending an event?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">5. Recognise your fear factor.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Terrorist attacks leave citizens in<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> emotional shock<\/a> <\/span>which can linger for days or weeks.  Emotional shock involves symptoms of raised awareness, including feeling on edge, suspicious, and fearful.<\/p>\n<p>The end result can be irrational thinking. For example, you might suddenly not want to take public transit even though you&#8217;re told it&#8217;s safe, or feel you should cancel all social events, or even start thinking about <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/moving-abroad-cause-depression.htm\">leaving the country.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If there is still real danger, of course, act accordingly. But learn to notice when you are making decisions simply from a place of fear. <\/strong>In other words, before you put your apartment up for sale, perhaps talk to others who are not in shock who can give you another perspective, or wait until you&#8217;ve had time to process your emotions.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">6. But there are rarely satisfying answers to senseless tragedy<\/strong>, and allowing yourself to obsess on answers can lead right to the addictive spirals of negative thinking and media addiction discussed above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead, seek an understanding that works for you.<\/strong> <strong>What philosophies make sense to you, personally, bring you as much personal peace as possible<\/strong> given the circumstances, and leave you feeling hopeful about the future and your place in it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider if it&#8217;s time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">set a new goal<\/a> in order to find personal resolution. What actions can you now take in life<\/strong> that will make you feel better, not worse, about the world you live in? Is it time to<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> start volunteering<\/a><\/span>? Would you like to start working on healing your family relationships? Or is it time to begin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-de-stress-mindfulness-relaxation-break.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">practising mindfulness<\/span> <\/a>so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">appreciate the now moment<\/span> <\/a>more?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">7. Do seek support &#8211; but with discernment. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Feeling vulnerable can diminish our discernibility, leaving us more likely to turn to people we usually wouldn&#8217;t out of a sense of panic and united suffering.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But if someone is bad at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-listener-person-centred-counselling.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">being a listener<\/span> <\/a>or unsupportive in good times, it&#8217;s sadly unlikely to be different in bad times \u2013 in fact they might even be more prickly as a result of their own anxiety. And just because someone was also near to the tragedy doesn&#8217;t mean they will understand your reaction, as we all respond differently to<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> stress.<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Protect yourself from the further overwhelm of feeling rejected, abandoned, or ashamed at a time when you are already feeling sensitive by trying to stick to friends and family you are sure can be true sources of love and support.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are not sure who to turn to, remember there are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hotlines<\/a><\/span> to call with listeners who are trained at being empathic, or consider speaking to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anxiety-counselling-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">professional counsellor<\/span> <\/a>with experience in understanding the effects of trauma.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Has this article been helpful?
