Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s nearing the end of another year, the time when annoying<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quit-social-media.htm\"> social media<\/a> posts ask, &#8220;Only so many days left in the year! What have you actually accomplished?\u201d. If you draw a blank and are left feeling, &#8220;Oh my God, my life is a waste,&#8221; you are far from alone.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">It\u2019s okay to sometimes feel useless<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Here\u2019s a secret \u2014<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>most people feel useless now and then.<\/strong> Yes, even people who seem really successful, or have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/therapist-costs-makes-you-money.htm\">a lot of money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>We have created a Western society where we are taught<\/strong> achievement is the key to happiness. But the problem with achievement is that it is never ending. You reach one goal, and there is another one ahead. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/grass-is-greener-syndrome.htm\">grass is always greener somewhere else<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Some people get hooked on the cycle achievement. But some of us sense the futility of it all.\u00a0 Instead of realising the system itself is flawed, we turn the futility onto ourselves. We become frozen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/passivity-in-relationships.htm\">passive<\/a>. We feel lost and like life is passing us by. We<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overlooked-again.htm\"> just aren&#8217;t chosen for the good stuff<\/a>, we tell ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">But my life is a waste, it\u2019s true\u2026 ask anyone<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>It\u2019s amazing how many of us outsource what our life is and isn\u2019t to other people\u2019s opinions.<\/strong> And by doing so we outsource our own value as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Meanwhile, the truth is that other people are so busy thinking about themselves,<\/strong> and what other people think of them, that they are truthfully thinking of you very little, if at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Ask yourself these questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">If suddenly all the people I think have a bad opinion of me vanished from the planet, how would I feel?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">If all those people actually thought I was amazing, would I actually like it? Or would I feel pressured?<br \/>\nWhat does blaming feeling useless on other people around me give me? Don\u2019t feel bad about that, many of us don\u2019t get to this point until later in life, and that\u2019s perfectly okay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Part of growing up means figuring out<\/strong> who we are outside of our family. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">What our values are<\/a>, versus those of our family.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">What deeply matters to us when push comes to shove?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Who would we be if our family didn\u2019t exist?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">How can we live out life as that person starting today?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>But my family is right, I&#8217;m a lost cause<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Of course the problem is some of us have a family member camping in our head for free.<\/strong> It\u2019s generally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\">the parent that always put us down<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-mother-wound-under-mothered.htm\">mother<\/a> who said \u2018why can\u2019t you just be well behaved like other children\u2019. The father who said, \u2018why do you have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">be an artist<\/a> when you could be a doctor like me\u2019. We internalise their voice and mistake it for our own, always nagging at us at every turn life takes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Is the version of your family member who sees you as a loser the version who exists today, or the old version still living in your head?<br \/>\nWhat do you think of your family? Do you see then as losers? Is there some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\">projection<\/a> going on?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">What would it feel like to just live life as yourself regardless of what they think?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Is it possible despite some road bumps that the truth is they would love you anyway?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Why do I feel that my life is a waste?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>So perhaps you are getting an idea now of why you feel your life is a waste. Generally this happens because we:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">have mistaken a flawed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">goal-obsessed<\/a> system for a flaw in ourselves, not seeing we can create our own version of a good and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-be-successful-in-life.htm\">successful life<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">believe more in what others think than what we ourselves think<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\"> endlessly comparing ourselves to others<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">are still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/inner-child-work-can-benefit.htm\">stuck in child mode<\/a> unable to break free of our family<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">secretly enjoy feeling like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\"> we are hopeless<\/a> and pathetic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">What? But there\u2019s a fair amount of science around how addictive negative thinking (&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\">rumination<\/a>&#8216;) actually is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>It can actually make our brain feel good. <\/strong>Unfortunately, as neuroscientist Alex Korb discusses in his book <em>The Upward Spiral,\u00a0<\/em> &#8220;Pride, shame and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a> all activate similar neural circuits &#8230; they&#8217;re activating the brain&#8217;s reward centres.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A main concept in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\"> life coaching<\/a> is that in order to attract something new into our life, we have to admit what we are getting from the old pattern. And then commit to making room by letting something go. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>We have to admit we might just enjoy<\/strong> the attention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/live-life-like-victim-12-ways-tell.htm\">feeling a helpless victim<\/a> brings. Or the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>lack of responsibility wasting our life allows. We\u2019ll have to let that go and accept we might have to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-fear-of-failure.htm\"> face our fears<\/a> and get attention in other ways, if we want to create a life that is valuable.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">How to stop feeling like your life is wasted<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Switch perspective.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">We can be so trapped in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective<\/a> of our family or the perspective of the magical person we think we are supposed to be, that we can totally miss the fact that this might be a privileged and unrealistic viewpoint.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\">What would your five-year old self think? Would they maybe be impressed that you live alone? Have nice clothes? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-at-university.htm\">Went to university<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">What about a person living in poverty in a third-world country? Would they see you as lazy and useless, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-always-have-bad-luck.htm\">lucky<\/a>? Would you want to switch lives with them, or would you suddenly be happy to stay you?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">2. Start to see life as a process, not a result.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Again, focusing on results never brings satisfaction. The way to happiness is to start to enjoy<\/strong> the process. If you are not enjoying the process, you have chosen the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">wrong goals<\/a> anyway. It\u2019s time to get honest about what you actually enjoy doing and start reforming life choices around that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Although don\u2019t confuse <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/introverts-in-the-workplace.htm\">maladaptive coping strategies<\/a> with things you enjoy doing.If \u00a0you like an activity as it helps you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">numb out<\/a>, that\u2019s not<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\"> happiness<\/a>, it means you are escaping. Look for activities that make you feel alive, clear-headed, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">3. If you can\u2019t stop comparing, compare down.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>It doesn\u2019t make you a bad person to notice how you are doing better than others, if<\/strong> done from the perspective of not judging anyone but just checking in with how far you\u2019ve come. And it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/psychology\/downward-social-comparison\">shown to help our moods and confidence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">4. Get out of the past and future and get into the present.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">You can\u2019t change the past, and you can\u2019t control the future. The only place you have any power is here and now. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">Learn how to practice mindfulness<\/a>, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/271904180_The_positive_effects_of_mindfulness_on_self-esteem\">proven to raise our self-esteem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">5. And don\u2019t overlook the power of support.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>The problem with feeling like a massive loser is that it comes with a truckload of<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> shame<\/a>. And shame means we hide what we are going through, pretending we are \u2018fine\u2019. Of course talking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a> or family can be unhelpful, if they are the ones we secretly worry see our life as going nowhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-makes-a-good-therapist.htm\">good therapist<\/a>, <strong>on the other hand, gets it. They have zero judgment and know what you are going through.<\/strong> They can also advise you if you might have another mental health issue that is contributing to your thinking that \u2018my life is a waste\u2019, such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\"> adult attention deficit disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-adhd-in-adults.htm\">Adult ADHD<\/a> <strong>means that your mind thinks faster than you an keep up with.<\/strong> And that what you say and do can not match the you that you are inside your head. The end result is always feeling a failure and like you are wasting your talents and your life.
