We also need to consider our mental wellbeing. What can we do to make sure we\u2019re still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">engaging in self-care<\/a> even when money is tight?<\/p>\n<h2>The link between finances and happiness<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Though it can feel inappropriate to admit, the truth is that<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">financial security is directly connected to good mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/19485506211060115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent paper in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science<\/a> puts this clearly when it concludes, &#8220;although money may not necessarily buy happiness, it reduces the intensity of stressors experienced in daily life\u2014and thereby increases life satisfaction.&#8221; <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This highlights the importance of guarding and prioritising our<\/strong> mental health even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/10-ways-help-debt-problems.htm\">when our economic situation is strained<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That being said, we shouldn\u2019t form the blanket conclusion that money alone<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-happiness-really.htm\">the key to happiness<\/a>. Yes, it is a strong component of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/general-adaptation-syndrome.htm\">living a less stressful life<\/a>. But the true answer to the question \u2018What makes us happy?\u2019 is much more complex.<\/p>\n<h2>What ultimately makes us happy?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/sonjalyubomirsky.com\/wp-content\/themes\/sonjalyubomirsky\/papers\/LSS2005.pdf\">American study on pursuing happiness<\/a> concluded that while 60 per cent of our happiness comes from uncontrollable factors such as circumstances and genetics, the other 40 per cent\u00a0 is the result of <strong>intentional activity on our part.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This means that while we<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-uncertainty.htm\">face different circumstances and challenges in life<\/a>, we all have the capacity to push back against tides of unhappiness to some extent when they arise.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_136446\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136446\" class=\"wp-image-136446 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/juliane-liebermann-Pw7i-YVg5uM-unsplash-400x293.jpg\" alt=\"how to survive a recession\" width=\"370\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/juliane-liebermann-Pw7i-YVg5uM-unsplash-400x293.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/juliane-liebermann-Pw7i-YVg5uM-unsplash-500x367.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/juliane-liebermann-Pw7i-YVg5uM-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-136446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Juliane Liebermann for Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The key to excelling in financially difficult situations then, is to realise that while<\/strong> money is a definite factor in influencing the opportunities which are available to us? A large part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\">personal happiness<\/a> is ultimately in our own hands.<\/p>\n<h2>How to survive a recession? Look to self-care<\/h2>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/nyuscholars.nyu.edu\/en\/publications\/happiness-and-self-care\">her publication on <em>Happiness and Self-care<\/em><\/a>, clinical professor Gina Merlo concludes that emphasising self-care means we &#8220;manage stress and enhance overall happiness&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Self-care evidently goes far beyond taking a day off or the advertised version of spending a day at a spa.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23967495\/\">paper on self-care amongst doctors<\/a> wisely points out that self-care is multi-faceted and is any strategy we use to take better care of our physical, intellectual, emotional, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spirituality-and-mental-health.htm\">spiritual<\/a> or social selves. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The paper then concluded that the most relevant core element of self-care which needs to be present in order for us to flourish is a strong sense of self-awareness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Self-awareness as a key to self-care<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A core thing to remember about ourselves as individuals is just that<\/strong>\u2026we are\u00a0individuals.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The self-care steps which one person uses will not necessarily resonate with others. We need to understand what elements need to be present in order for us personally to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\"> truly relax<\/a> and de-stress.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A key way to know this is to give yourself permission to ask\u2014and answer\u2014the question:<\/strong> \u2018What would truly make me happy today?\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is not a question which should be asked in a fantastical way<\/strong> with answers involving winning the lottery or striking it rich in the market. Instead, we should consider our true <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/debt-depression.htm\">financial circumstances<\/a>, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/be-yourself-around-others.htm\">our true selves<\/a>, and ask ourselves what commonsense activities we could implement to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">increase our happiness levels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>This might mean going to the zoo\u2026or starting a jigsaw puzzle\u2026or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\">standing up for ourselves at work<\/a>. It could be any one of a million possibilities. The only key is that it should be a step which we take voluntarily with an eye on speaking to our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-self.htm\">unique personality<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Thrive in a recession by changing routines<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_136447\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136447\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-136447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/priscilla-du-preez-7jQQZdsAETk-unsplash-1-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"recession mental health\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/priscilla-du-preez-7jQQZdsAETk-unsplash-1-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/priscilla-du-preez-7jQQZdsAETk-unsplash-1-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/priscilla-du-preez-7jQQZdsAETk-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-136447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Priscilla du Preez for Unsplash<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Routines are amazing things which help wire our brains to<\/strong> complete repetitive tasks effectively.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S019188691730274X\">a 2017 study in the journal <em>Personality and Individual Differences<\/em><\/a> revealed that people who rely on habit and routine to accomplish tasks can sometimes display<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> higher levels of anxiety<\/a> than those who change up their routines.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was further supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31519052\/\">an interesting study looking at how curiosity in daily life affects our wellbeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The study discovered that people who explore new ways of completing tasks are generally more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">goal-oriented<\/a> and experience better moods than people who rely on habit alone.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">What these studies reveal is that when we rely on routines we can lose our sense of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilience<\/a> by limiting the amount of new experiences that we face.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, as we face the task of reimagining self-care and enjoyable activities, one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is the chance to change our routines and explore new avenues.<\/p>\n<h2>How to tweak routines to improve mental health in a recession<\/h2>\n<p>What can changing our routines to improve our mental health look like in practise?<\/p>\n<h3>1. Change the time of your activities.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>get up earlier to be more productive in the morning<\/li>\n<li>take a midday break for new activities (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise<\/a> or household chores)<\/li>\n<li>work hard to make weekends times of anticipation and exploration instead of times of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">habit<\/a> and routine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Change the location of our activities.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>vary routines to include factors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-ecopsychology.htm\">fresh air, sunshine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sensory-overload-in-adults.htm\">different sounds<\/a> or landscapes in order to inspire new experiences<\/li>\n<li>combine mundane activities with more energising locations (i.e. work at the coffee shop; make a long overdue phone call while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">out on a walk<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>explore a \u2018third place\u2019 to add a new geographic twist to your activities (a library, community centre, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Change the social circle of our activities.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>complete a task alone instead of in a group, or in a group instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-time-alone.htm\">alone<\/a> depending on your usual habit<\/li>\n<li>move out of your social comfort zone and do something completely out of character in order to expand your social horizon, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\">volunteering<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>4. Pivot to more meaningful activities.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Perhaps the most relevant answer to the question<\/strong>, &#8220;How to survive a recession with our mental health intact?&#8221; is found in the recent book <em>Principles of Medical Professionalism.<\/em> Author Gia Merlo points out the need for people to engage in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">more meaningful activities<\/a> as a means of avoiding negative patterns and emotions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This shift toward an<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-existential-psychotherapy.htm\"> increase in meaning<\/a> is a crucial part of self-care because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-existential-crisis-signs.htm\">search for meaning<\/a> is tied to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\"> deepest values<\/a> we hold as people.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">As we explore differing ways to engage in self-care, it is then vital for us to consider the things that we hold most important\u2014our faith, our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/get-along-with-family.htm\"> family<\/a>. Our charitable endeavours, or any other cause we believe in deeply.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>By implementing this change, along with the other self-care strategies<\/strong> discussed here, we can go a long way toward re-setting our view of daily happiness as we weather the economic storms around us.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Need support with your mental health?
