Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How connected are alcohol and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mild-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>, really? And what if you only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\">feel happy<\/a> when drinking alcohol?<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m only happy when drinking alcohol&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>The British public is hardly known for its restraint when it comes to alcohol.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/alcoholchange.org.uk\/alcohol-facts\/fact-sheets\/alcohol-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to the charity Alcohol Concern<\/a>, 24% of Brits and Scots regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">drink more units than the recommended guidelines<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And it contributes to over six thousand<\/strong> deaths a year, as well as more than 60 medical conditions. One of which is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-counselling-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression. <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Alcohol and depression \u2013 chicken or egg?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The relationship between drinking and depression is <\/strong>less about determining which causes the other. And more about an intertwined relationship that becomes a vicious cycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, we can convince ourselves that alcohol makes us feel good.<\/strong> We drink to relax after a hard day. So we see alcohol as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\"><em>stopping\u00a0<\/em>any depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But even a casual drinking habit leads to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\">lighter sleep<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">fatigue<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/irritability-factor.htm\">irritability<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workplace-stress-myth.htm\">lowered performance at work<\/a>. And the more we make mistakes or snap at those we love, the more we feel we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/having-a-bad-day.htm\">had a bad day<\/a>. The more we drink, and on the cycle goes. Over time, we develop bigger problems in life that mean we feel worse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">A <a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/alcalc.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/49\/1\/60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study by the University of Vermont <\/a>found that alcohol use &#8220;significantly predicted decreased happiness the next day&#8221; for both men and women in the study, with a slightly higher risk of sadness in women than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Is alcohol a depressant?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes. Alcohol gives you a quick up, but<\/strong> it&#8217;s actually classified as a depressant. For example, alcohol increases the amount of a neurotransmitter called GABA. This has the role of slowing your energy down, &#8216;depressing&#8217; your brain. It is the very neurotransmitter things like Valium work to increase.\u00a0 And we can all agree Valium is no upper.<\/p>\n<h2>If alcohol is a depressant why do I feel happy?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_13769\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14895803631_156093367e.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13769\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13769\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14895803631_156093367e-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"alcohol depression\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14895803631_156093367e-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14895803631_156093367e.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/14895803631_156093367e-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kristoffer-trolle\/14895803631\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Kristoffer Trolle<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Alcohol does up your amount of dopamine<\/strong>, a chemical connected to your brain&#8217;s &#8216;reward&#8217; patterns. So alcohol makes you feel that you are suddenly happy. Of course, to maintain that sensation, just like any pleasurable activity that releases dopamine (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/holiday-romance-mental-health.htm\">good holiday<\/a>, being around someone exciting) you are driven to keep drinking.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But the more the dopamine release encourages you to drink another few rounds, then the more other parts of your brain are suffering a depressed effect. And that depressed effect lingers, while the dopamine is only a quick hit that fades fast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Is drinking when sad dangerous?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s worth noting that if you already suffer mood issues, <\/strong>you are more at risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-use.htm\">alcohol issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">\u00a0An <a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15808128\/\">overview pulling data from over 35 studies<\/a> found that if you are prone to depression, your chance of having alcohol problems are more than doubled. And you are at a higher risk for suicide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>But what if alcohol and depression don&#8217;t seem related for me?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Before you convince yourself you don&#8217;t have a problem, get honest with<\/strong> yourself if the following sound familiar:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a> about what you did and said<\/li>\n<li>poor performance at work<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fatigue<\/span> <\/a>and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insomnia<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">self-esteem issues<\/span><\/a> due to weight (alcohol is high in calories)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sexual-problems-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sexual difficulties<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-partners-double-standard.htm\">promiscuity<\/a><\/li>\n<li>cycles of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> shame<\/a><\/span> and regret after drinking<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">troubles being focussed<\/span><\/a> and organised<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-tips-for-anger-management-in-relationships.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relationship difficulties.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And note even casual alcohol use lowers our<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resiliency<\/a>. Even if right now alcohol-related low moods and exhaustion seem no big deal, if life suddenly throws a curve ball? Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">losing your job<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/symptoms-of-bereavement-how-to-cope.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the loss of a loved one?<\/a><\/span> You would be more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">suffer low moods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Warning signs you are drinking too much<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-136212 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-pixabay-262218-2-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-pixabay-262218-2-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-pixabay-262218-2-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/pexels-pixabay-262218-2.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>This is not to say if you have an occasional drink you are going to suffer depression. Or that you have to <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\">be depressed<\/a> to have a drinking problem.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Warning signs that you are drinking too much include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>using alcohol to cope with your moods or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/building-confidence.htm\"> feel confident<\/a><\/li>\n<li>needing to drink more and more to reach the same effect<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">not being honest<\/a> with loved ones about how much you drink<\/li>\n<li>believing having a hangover is normal<\/li>\n<li>thinking about the next time you&#8217;ll drink throughout your day<\/li>\n<li>physical signs of a drinking problem (low <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>, poor health, weight gain, etc)<\/li>\n<li>alcohol use directly affecting your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\"> relationships<\/a>, career, and family life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How can you tell if your moods and drinking are connected?<\/h2>\n<p>Ask yourself the following questions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take note of your mood before and after drinking. Is there a pattern?<\/li>\n<li>Notice your triggers and reasoning for consuming alcohol.
