Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Christmas cheer is a great concept, but having the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-to-do-if-you-feel-depressed.htm\">Christmas blues<\/a> is the realistic experience for many.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatrictimes.com\/view\/study-shows-how-patients-manage-holiday-depression\">survey discussed in the Psychiatric Times<\/a> found that 67% of those with depression report that it worsens in the festive season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is behind holiday depression?<\/h2>\n<p>Why is it that the holidays make feeling okay so hard?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Far too much &#8216;comparison shopping&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>And we aren&#8217;t talking about actual gifts here<\/strong>.We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">compare our lives<\/a> to an unrealistic representation of shiny, perfect Christmas experiences we are bombarded with by the media. We compare our holidays to those of others, like our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/staying-friends-with-an-ex.htm\">friends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if that is not enough, this Christmas is then held up to the past ones.<\/strong> The one before the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-after-divorce.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">divorce<\/a><\/span>, or when we were in love and not<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-single-and-mental-health.htm\"> single,<\/a> or when our mother was still around and we weren&#8217;t <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/symptoms-of-bereavement-how-to-cope.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grieving<\/a><\/span>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/birthday-blues-milestones-affect-mental-health.htm\">when we were younger<\/a>, happier&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Stress is higher. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>There are simply more things on the to-do list. <\/strong>More get togethers, more gifts to buy, more meals to plan.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Add to this that we tend to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drink more alcohol<\/a><\/span> (a <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drinkaware.co.uk\/news\/new-study-finds-tis-the-season-for-peak-drinking-and-hangovers\">survey shows<\/a> 61% of Brits who drink indulge far more during the festive season) and eat less discriminately. Both of which can lead to sluggishness and <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">disrupted sleeping patterns<\/span><\/a>, so we aren&#8217;t even well equipped to deal with the stress.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>There is also the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-navigate-christmas-dinner.htm\">stress of having to see family<\/a> we don&#8217;t get along with, which can cause weeks of worry and the Christmas blues.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. End of year anxiety leads to negative thinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_13786\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5319329535_2a03d4c8b2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13786\" class=\"wp-image-13786 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5319329535_2a03d4c8b2-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"depression at Christmas\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5319329535_2a03d4c8b2-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5319329535_2a03d4c8b2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5319329535_2a03d4c8b2-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/13941029@N04\/5319329535\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Chris Wolff<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>With New Years pending, you might be<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/my-life-is-a-waste.htm\">criticising yourself for what you did or didn&#8217;t do with your year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/gratitude-tips.htm\">Gratitude<\/a><strong> goes out the window as suddenly we don&#8217;t have<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compromise-in-relationships.htm\">the right relationship<\/a>, the right house, the right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">budget<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>4.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #993366;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Loneliness<\/span> is a common trigger for the Christmas blues.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Not having a family around you this time of year<\/strong> can make you feel like a leper, no matter how much you claim you like the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-time-alone.htm\"> time to yourself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And because<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> loneliness is not even about being alone<\/a><\/span>, but about not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-connection-coronavirus.htm\">feeling connected to others<\/a>? You can alternately find yourself surrounded by &#8216;friends&#8217; and &#8216;family&#8217; but feeling entirely lost.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">How to pull through the Christmas blues<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So what can you do if the Christmas blues are nipping at your heels?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Be honest with yourself about how you are feeling.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Trying to deny how you are feeling means you can&#8217;t start to seek solutions.<\/strong> It also means you miss the chance to realise if your mood issue is actually something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seasonal-affective-disorder.htm\">seasonal affective disorder (SAD)<\/a>, which can be treated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if you are trying to hide from how you feel by<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">overeating<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">using drugs<\/a> or alcohol, you will just be making things worse. If you can only manage one thing, go for self care.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_13787\" style=\"width: 268px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/11328231473_97d39e8e45.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13787\" class=\"wp-image-13787 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/11328231473_97d39e8e45-258x400.jpg\" alt=\"blue christmas\" width=\"258\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/11328231473_97d39e8e45-258x400.jpg 258w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/11328231473_97d39e8e45.jpg 322w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/funkdooby\/11328231473\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Funk Dooby<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>If one thing slips mist during the holidays, it&#8217;s a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">good self-care routine.<\/a> This is a big red flag if you suffer from low moods, because self-care is now understood to be a pillar of psychological wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So go against the grain and keep your routine going.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">Exercise is proven to help moods<\/a>. Eating well also matters, affecting your energy levels. And watch your alcohol intake.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Don&#8217;t forget a cornerstone of self care is taking time for yourself, even if that means saying no to yet another party.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Get into shades of grey.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>No, not THAT shades of grey \u2013 but grey thinking. The kind of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negative thinking<\/a><\/span> that leads to depression tends to be extreme, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">black and white thinking<\/span> <\/a>that lacks reason.<\/p>\n<p>Take a tip from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a><\/span>. When you have a negative thought, force yourself to think of the exact opposite, then write down a thought that is between the two that you can support with real facts.<\/p>\n<p><em>For example, if you think, &#8216;nobody cares that I am alone at Christmas\u201d, the exact opposite is \u201ceveryone cares that I am alone at Christmas\u201d, and the middle ground is, \u201cyou know my friend called the other day, and Jack at work asked if I&#8217;d be okay over the holidays \u2013 some people do care about my Christmas\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Push yourself to get out and be active.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>There are times when self-imposed isolation with a tub of ice cream and a<\/strong> series to binge is just the ticket. But at Christmas we stay home, turn on the TV, and\u00a0 are faced with images of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/peace-and-joy.htm\">joy and peace<\/a> that can make us feel worse. Plus, we have time off work, so there is no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">workday<\/a> ahead to stop of from spiralling too much.<\/p>\n<p><em>Find things to do that aren&#8217;t Christmas- y and force yourself out, whether that is the gym, a long walk, or even just taking yourself to a movie.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. And it&#8217;s hard to compare yourself in a bad light or feel negative when you are helping others who are less fortunate.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Forget presents, be present.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Remember Scrooge? And the<\/strong> hauntings by the ghosts of Christmases past and future?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Many of us don&#8217;t need ghosts as we haunt ourselves, moping about the past we can&#8217;t change and the future we can&#8217;t control.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The place it is hardest to be miserable in is often <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the present moment<\/a><\/span>.<\/strong> What in this exact moment, right now, is actually ok? What, right in front of you, can you see, smell, hear, or taste that is nice? Are you in a nice room, with nice music, and nice food in the stove? Are these not things to be happy about?<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is essentially<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/easy-ways-to-be-mindful.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> mindfulness<\/a><\/span>, a practice of being aware of your present thoughts<\/strong> and feelings that many therapists now use with clients due to its effectiveness at improving calm and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Don&#8217;t just put up the tree, put up your boundaries.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>If you aren&#8217;t alone but are depressed because of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dysfunctional-family-help.htm\">family stress<\/a>, this one is crucial.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">One of the main reasons we fall into low moods is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low self-esteem.<\/a><\/span> And often what is behind low self-esteem is knowing that we&#8217;ve let people walk all over us again, ie, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poor personal boundaries<\/a><\/span>. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And always overdoing it to please others is also exhausting!<\/strong> See the holidays as a great time to practice <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saying no<\/a><\/span> to what you don&#8217;t want and learning to delegate and say yes to you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-117271 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/headshot-yellow-e1675110089673-150x150.png\" alt=\"Andrea M.
