Read our comprehensive <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guide to Sleep Problems<\/a><\/span>].<\/p>\n<h3>Sleeplessness and mental health<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Research shows that if you do suffer often from sleeplessness, you are more prone to developing certain mental illnesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicalpsychiatryjournal.com\/article\/0006-3223(95)00188-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a study<\/a><\/span> led by researchers from the University of Michigan, for example, it was found that <strong>those who did suffer from insomnia were four times more likely to then develop <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And sleep problems are far more prevalent in those who have psychological health issues as well.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Harvard medical school in America offers the statistic that while up to 18% of adults suffer with sleep problems, up to 80 per cent of patients with mental health issues suffer from chronic sleep trouble.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>What mental health conditions are related to sleep problems?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>As mentioned,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-and-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> depression<\/span> <\/a>often comes hand in hand with sleep disorders<\/strong>. Other mental health issues that can involve sleeplessness are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manage-anxiety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/generalised-anxiety-panic-disorder-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anxiety disorders<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ADHD<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bipolar disorder<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">schizophrenia<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">addictions<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>But is my sleeplessness causing poor mental health &#8211; or vice versa?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>While it is confirmed that mental health challenges and sleep challenges tend to come hand in hand, it&#8217;s often hard to tell if sleep issues are a symptom or a cause. <\/strong>Scientists suspect a common cause for both in the brain, but have yet to pinpoint where this is and how it works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So in many cases it&#8217;s left a &#8216;chicken or egg&#8217;, mutually contributing situation<\/strong>. For example, depression often causes sleeplessness. But not sleeping leaves you more emotionally vulnerable, prone to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">negative thinking<\/a><\/span>, less able to think clearly, and even more sensitive to pain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So it&#8217;s possible that sleeplessness can turn a small mental health issue into a bigger one<\/strong>, such as exacerbating anxiety into an anxiety disorder, or low moods into depression.<\/p>\n<h3>Normal sleeplessness, or a sign of a problem?<\/h3>\n<p>How do you know if your sleeplessness is in the normal range, or is a sign you are suffering a psychological issue or are increasingly at risk of developing one?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>1. Look at what is the probable cause of your sleep problem.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following are normal causes of occasional sleeplessness &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a new sleep environment<\/li>\n<li>an obvious disturbance (noisy neighbour, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/parenting-and-mental-health.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new baby<\/a><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>a life change (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/symptoms-of-bereavement-how-to-cope.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bereavement<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">redundancy<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/moving-abroad-cause-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moving house<\/a><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-heartbreak.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relationship breakdown<\/a><\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-after-divorce.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">divorce<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/workplace-stress-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stress at work<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>a rise in caffeine, nicotine, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alcohol intake<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>stopping an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exercise regime<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_13998\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/386516499_d75ea93c6b-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13998\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13998\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/386516499_d75ea93c6b-1-400x262.jpg\" alt=\"problems with sleeping\" width=\"400\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/386516499_d75ea93c6b-1-400x262.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/386516499_d75ea93c6b-1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pittaya\/386516499\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Pittaya Sroilong<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>2. Rule out medical conditions that could be causing sleep issues.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have you started a new medication recently? Is there a chance your hormones have changed, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postnatal-depression-case-study.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pregnancy<\/span> <\/a>or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/menopause-anxiety.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">menopause<\/a><\/span>? Have you had your thyroid checked?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>3. Then consider how long your sleep problem has been going on for.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s occasional, a night or two here and there, it&#8217;s not likely related to anything more than <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stress<\/a><\/span>. But if your sleep problem has been going on for several weeks or more and seems to be getting worse over better, or affecting your moods, it might be that your sleep issues are rolling into a bigger problem and it&#8217;s time to speak to your GP.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Even if your sleeping issue began with what seemed a logical reason, such as one of the above, if it ongoing and is affecting your moods it&#8217;s a good idea to seek advice.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>It&#8217;s not just insomnia \u2013 other sleep disorders to watch out for<\/h3>\n<p>Don&#8217;t think that just because you can sleep a bit, you don&#8217;t have to worry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insomnia- difficulty falling asleep or staying so &#8211; is only part of the wider category of sleep problems related to mental health issues that can also include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>waking up too early every morning<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-and-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chronic fatigue<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>sleepiness during day<\/li>\n<li>nightmares<\/li>\n<li>waking up several times in the night<\/li>\n<li>narcolepsy<\/li>\n<li>sleep apnea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Can therapy help my sleep problems?<\/h3>\n<p>If you are experiencing sleep issues, there are things you can do by yourself, such as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-disorder-tips-insomnia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">practising good sleep habits<\/a><\/span> and upping your <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-care-a-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">self-care regime<\/a><\/span>, or trying relaxation techniques like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/easy-ways-to-be-mindful.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mindfulness<\/span> <\/a>and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">progressive muscle relaxation.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But in many cases<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/services.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> talk therapies<\/span> <\/a>are indeed a helpful addition when it comes to sleep problems, <\/strong>especially if your sleep is affected by worries, anxiety, or racing thoughts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Therapy can also help if your sleeplessness is caused by a life change it&#8217;s hard to handle by yourself, such as<\/strong> losing a love one the demise of an important relationship. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">therapist<\/span> <\/a>can help you understand how you are feeling and make a plan for moving forward that means you feel more relaxed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if you are finding a small sleep problem has rolled into a bigger one because you are now actually anxious about sleep itself (more common than you think), then you might want to consider<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a><\/span>. A shorter term form of talk psychotherapy, CBT can help you change negative thought patterns about sleep in their tracks.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Have you found that sleep problems made your mental health worse?
