Even if it makes no sense to feel scared, anxiety will leave you feeling some form of fear, including lower forms like dread or unease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feeling out of control<\/strong>. You feel like you have no power over your life and emotions as you can&#8217;t pinpoint exactly why you feel so scared and nervous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A sense of helplessness.<\/strong> Without knowing what could stop the feelings you are experiencing, you can start to feel completely overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tension.<\/strong> This can include physical symptoms like headaches and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">muscle pain<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obsessing on what you are feeling.<\/strong> Anxiety is so irrational that often you can start to even have &#8216;anxiety about the anxiety&#8217;, exacerbating what you are already struggling with.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Panic<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. The overwhelm can escalate into panic or even p<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/recognize-a-panic-attack.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anic attacks<\/a><\/span>. Panic attacks include physical symptoms like breaking out in a sweat, feeling suddenly very hot or cold, a tightening of your chest, and a beating heart.<\/p>\n<h3>When is it stress and when is it anxiety?<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stress<\/span><\/a> is a feeling of overwhelm that has a clear cause or trigger.<\/strong> Life throws something at you you didn&#8217;t expect, or you make a difficult choice, and the resulting sense of frustration, tension and worry is stress.<\/p>\n<p>Stress can of course be irrational \u2013 you can become so blinded by your emotions and upset that you have exaggerated, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> dramatic thinking<\/a><\/span>. But it is rational in the sense that you know why you are going through it. You might also suffer sleeplessness, feel constantly distracted, and have dizzy spells.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Social anxiety disorder<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8211; more than just being anxious about social events, this disorder sees your anxiety about social interaction affecting your everyday quality of life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Panic disorder<\/strong> \u2013 experiencing panic attacks on a regular basis for no obvious reason.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/ptsd-asd-help-guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a><\/strong><\/span> \u2013 ongoing psychological and physical stress after surviving a traumatic experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phobias<\/strong> \u2013 these can include claustrophobia and agoraphobia, or things like fear of flying<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Obsessive compulsive disorder<\/a><\/strong><\/span> \u2013 involving anxiety but its own separate disorder, OCD involves managing obsessive thoughts that cause anxiety by using ritualistic thought patterns or behaviours.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that anxiety can also come hand in hand with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-counselling-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">depression<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3>Therapies for dealing with anxiety<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Most <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-therapy-choose.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forms of counselling and psychotherapy<\/a><\/span> help with anxiety because they create a safe space for you to gain clarity on what you are going through.<\/strong> They also help you cultivate your inner strength, leaving you to feel stronger and safer even when life does become difficult.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/span><\/a> is often recommended for generalised anxiety disorder as it helps you gain recognition and control of your thought patterns. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-based-cognitive-therapy-london.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)<\/span> <\/a>adds in mindfulness techniques to help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings and differentiate between what you are really experiencing in the present moment compared to what your mind is telling you you are experiencing.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do you have an experience with anxiety you&#8217;d like to share?
