Read our comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Guide to Mindfulness<\/span><\/a>.]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800080;\">What Does Mindful Parenting Look Like?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Three American researchers, themselves parents, realised that no real model of &#8216;mindful parenting&#8217; had been created. So Coatsworth, Duncan, and Greenberg put together<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2730447\/#CR107\"> a comprehensive review of available information on mindfulness and parenting<\/a>,<\/span> then <strong>created their own model for how to best bring moment-to-moment awareness to your relationship with your child<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Their model of &#8216;mindful parenting&#8217; involves the following five approaches:<\/p>\n<h3>1) Compassion for Self and Child.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A parent must have compassion and empathy for their child as a unique being<\/strong>, separate from oneself.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14878\" style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14878\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3009287272_5a3ca9ba8c-292x400.jpg\" alt=\"Mindful parenting\" width=\"292\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3009287272_5a3ca9ba8c-292x400.jpg 292w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3009287272_5a3ca9ba8c.jpg 365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tacitrequiem\/3009287272\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">tacit requiem (joanneQEscober )<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to having compassion for the child, <strong>a mindful parent will hold oneself in equal compassion and empathy<\/strong> (now referred to as &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">self-compassion<\/span><\/a>&#8216;).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>This means you do not hold yourself to a high standard you can&#8217;t reach. When mistakes arise you work to forgive and accept yourself, and plan to do better next time.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2) Listening with Full Awareness and Attention<\/h3>\n<p>Mindfulness consists of clear, focused attention.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Under the mindful parenting approach, this type of attentive awareness is applied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-listener-person-centred-counselling.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">listening<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By directing your full attention to you child, it takes listening to a dimension beyond simply hearing the words that are said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You will start to see your child&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">perspective<\/span><\/a> and become more sensitive to the child\u2019s facial expressions, tones of voice, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-power-of-body-language.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">body language<\/span><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Listening with full awareness not only makes the child feel heard and supported, but by improving your perception of your child it can also help reduce miscommunications, conflicts, and disagreements, particularly during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">adolescent years<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>3) Emotional Awareness of Self and Child<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Strong emotions can have a powerful influence on our behaviour. They can ignite automatic thoughts, responses, and behaviours that could undermine our best parenting practices.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Being committed to identifying and understanding your own emotions (called <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-awareness.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emotional awareness<\/span><\/a>) means you can consciously choose how to respond to your child. And mindfulness leaves us far more likely to recognise and accept what we are really feeling instead of lying to ourselves out of self-judgement. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mindful parenting also involves helping your child with their emotional intelligence, encouraging them to label, express, and discuss their emotions in a healthy way.<\/strong> If you are more present to your child, you will more readily see what they are experiencing or understand their reactions, and will be better equipped to ask them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">good questions<\/span><\/a> about how they are feeling.<\/p>\n<h3>4) Nonjudgmental Acceptance of Self and Child<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_14880\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13584554804_6c1ebae9bd-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14880\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14880\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13584554804_6c1ebae9bd-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"Mindful Parenting Tips \" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13584554804_6c1ebae9bd-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13584554804_6c1ebae9bd-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/13584554804_6c1ebae9bd-1-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/armymedicine\/13584554804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Army Medicine<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Parents tend to have their own strong views regarding a child\u2019s characteristics, talents, behaviours, values, and expectations. <strong>These ideas may be biased by a parent&#8217;s own desires for their children and can be quite unrealistic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Mindful parenting involves trying not to put your own wishes onto your child but instead working to cultivate nonjudgmental acceptance of the child\u2019s unique personality and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">goals.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This does not amount to not setting expectations for you child, or not disciplining when necessary. It&#8217;s more about accepting your child as he or she is right now<\/strong>, and recognising that challenges and mistakes are a healthy part of life.<\/p>\n<p>Such an approach also frees you to see other strengths in your child you might have missed by seeing things in only the way you wanted to.<\/p>\n<h3>5) Self-Regulation in the Parenting Relationship<\/h3>\n<p>Instead of acting from a place of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/control-your-temper.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> anger and hostility<\/span><\/a> when your child misbehaves, mindful parenting means you consciously choose to act in a way that is in accordance with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/conflicting-parenting-styles.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">parenting values<\/span><\/a> and goals.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t imply that emotions such as anger will not be felt. Instead, it suggests that you <strong>pause and reflect on the emotion before reacting from unconscious impulses<\/strong>. Your self-regulation, in conjunction with the previously mentioned emotional awareness, can help your child develop similar skills as well.<\/p>\n<h3>But Does Mindful Parenting Really Work?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Mindfulness itself has been heavily studied by now and the results are better than researchers even expected<\/strong>. From lowering stress and aiding in depression, it&#8217;s positive benefits are not doubted (read more in our article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-and-therapy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Does Mindfulness Really Work?<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>But studies that look at the link between mindfulness and parenting are not as popular. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scirp.org\/journal\/PaperInformation.aspx?PaperID=62741\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">recent 2015 study<\/span> <\/a>was, however, carried out in Australia at the University of Melbourne. It only looked at 68 parent\/child units but <strong>it concluded that mindful parenting significantly reduces stress levels in children.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>And Don&#8217;t Forget This Crucial Bit&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most important parts of mindful parenting is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/easy-ways-to-be-mindful.htm\">develop and maintain a mindfulness practice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Simply meditating for at least 10 minutes each day can help reduce your stress levels and make all of the above concepts much more feasible. <\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And if parenting is leaving you overwhelmed, remember that support is available.<\/strong> Consider seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/parents-therapy-london.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">help for parenting problems<\/span><\/a> instead of blaming yourself &#8211; parenting is not an easy task, and sometimes we all need an impartial viewpoint and safe environment to unload.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Want to share your experience of mindfulness and parenting?
