A counselling psychologist simply has a more scientific background.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Whereas a psychotherapist would have spent their entire four or more years of study learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-therapy-choose.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">different psychotherapeutic approaches<\/span> <\/a>and ways of working with clients, a counselling psychologist will have spent more time studying the research around human behaviour and the mind. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Counselling psychologists, with their scientific psychology background, can also be found in other environments <\/strong>that psychotherapists and counsellors are less common in. Their training means they also work in education, for corporations, the military, and in social services, to offer some examples.<\/p>\n<h2>Counselling psychologist vs psychotherapist<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/therapists.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">UK Counselling psychologists<\/span><\/a> cannot prescribe medication. The only mental health practitioner who can prescribe medication is a psychiatrist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is because a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/psychiatrists-london.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> psychiatrist<\/span> <\/a>is a trained doctor who then then went into mental health. Many also now include tools of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">mindfulness<\/span>.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Types of issues counselling psychotherapists deal with<\/h2>\n<p>A counselling psychotherapist will deal with the same issues as a counsellor or psychotherapist (depending also on what they have decided to specialise in if they are not a &#8216;generalist&#8217;). These can include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">depression<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">relationship problems<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"ptsdhttps:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/ptsd-asd-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">PTSD<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/workplace-stress-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">workplace stress<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sleep problems<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/parenting-and-mental-health.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">parenting struggles<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">addictions<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What about clinical psychologists, is that the same thing?<\/h2>\n<p>There can be considerable overlap between counselling psychologists and clinical psychologists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both work with clients, and are interested in helping their clients find relief from psychological issues. <\/strong>They both often assist with issues depression, anxiety, and trauma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many clinical psychologists, however, still have a foot in research and are more prone to take a research-based approach<\/strong> such as using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychometric-test.htm\">psychometric tests<\/a> and observation.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this clinical psychologists tend to work with pathological issues (more serious mental health issues) that can include things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">schizophrenia<\/span><\/a>, psychosis, and behavioural problems.
