Just have a strong feeling you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">can&#8217;t trust them<\/a>? It&#8217;s a definitely something to take seriously.<\/p>\n<p><em>But it&#8217;s also something to look at honestly, as it might mean other things than you expect.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Key things to know\u00a0about therapy and trust<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">Therapy<\/a> is an unusual and unique experience if you think about it. Where else in life do you share your thoughts and secrets with someone you don&#8217;t know personally, and then pay them for it?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Because therapy is such a different experience, you can&#8217;t expect it to be comfortable or familiar at first. Or even for quite some time.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Acquaint yourself with the process and its pitfalls before determining if any discomfort and lack of trust is about your therapist&#8230; or something else.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Recognise that therapy is actually a relationship.<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/therapist-costs-makes-you-money.htm\">pay for the experience of therapy<\/a>. But it is still about forming a bond with someone, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-therapeutic-alliance.htm\">therapy at heart a relationship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Think about other relationships in life and how long it can take to know someone. Are their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a> you weren&#8217;t sure of at first that you now like? Or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\">romantic partner you took ages to fall for<\/a>? Therapy is no different. It can take time and patience to hit your stride and to form a bond of trust.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_15236\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4517637307_e8c22799f2-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15236\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15236\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/recognizepanicattack-285x400.jpg\" alt=\"I don't trust my therapist \" width=\"285\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/joehoughton\/4517637307\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Joe Houghton<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>You do need to give your therapist a chance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s recommended that you try four appointments<\/strong> (an assessment and three sessions) before making your mind up about whether you can trust your therapist.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Also keep in mind that if you aren&#8217;t good at trusting relationships elsewhere, you are not suddenly going to be good at building one in the therapy room! If you often<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\"> like someone at first then change your mind<\/a>, or get suspicious of others over small things? It&#8217;s likely to happen with your therapist, too.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>2. Learn about transference.<\/h3>\n<p>Have you ever known someone you always felt or acted awkward around? Only to have the sudden realisation that it might be because they reminded you of one of your parents whom you don&#8217;t get on with?<\/p>\n<p>This is really what is referred to as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-transference-in-therapy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>transference<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>in psychology.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Transference refers to when a client assumes or feels certain things about the therapist because of other relationships they have in the present or past.They are &#8216;transferring&#8217; feelings and thoughts from those other experiences onto their therapist, instead of seeing the therapist as they really are right here and now.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Are you seeing your therapist as he or she really is?<\/strong> Or are you making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">assumptions<\/span><\/a> about them based on your past experiences with others?<\/p>\n<h3>3. Understand psychological projection.<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_15222\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15222\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mindfulnessbasedcognitivetherapy-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"By: Celestine Chua\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: Celestine Chua<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Projection is the art of unconsciously attributing<\/strong> how we secretly feel to others instead of ourselves.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>A tricky mechanism, it can blind us to what is really happening in our relationships.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">psychological projection<\/span> <\/a>is common in the therapy room.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">You might think you don&#8217;t like your therapist because deep down you are worried they don&#8217;t like you. Or you might think they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/judging-people-why-we-do-it.htm\">too judgemental<\/a> when really it&#8217;s you judging them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>When not trusting your therapist can be a GOOD thing<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Having uncertain feelings about your therapist can actually lead to important progress, if you approach it correctly.<\/strong>\u00a0And yes, that means talking to them about it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If you feel you&#8217;d rather run away then talk honestly to your therapist about what you are feeling? It&#8217;s likely this &#8216;abandon ship&#8217; pattern is in your other relationships, too. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Therapy provides a safe space where you\u00a0can experiment at other ways of relating<\/strong> that you can then take out and try with confidence in your real life. Being brave enough to explore such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-avoidant-attachment.htm\">patterns of avoidance<\/a> and judgement in the safe space of the therapy room can<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0lead to big changes in the way you relate to others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you instead keep running from one therapist to the next<\/strong> at the first hurdle? Or see therapy as a place to &#8216;fool&#8217; your therapist into thinking you like them? You will miss out on this great benefit and really just waste your money.<\/p>\n<h2>I definitely don&#8217;t trust my therapist. What next?<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s two ways to look at it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You don&#8217;t have to like your therapist for therapy to be effective.\u00a0<\/strong>The truth is, if you rarely trust or like people, you might not like any therapist you work with.\u00a0It&#8217;s a matter of picking someone you can relax enough around that maybe in the future you could like or trust them.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">But if you really don&#8217;t trust or like them, then it might be in your best interest to find another therapist. \u00a0Therapy is like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-dating-rules.htm\">dating<\/a>, and you need that &#8216;click&#8217; to eventually happen. Or it&#8217;s unlikely the therapy will serve you as well as you can.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Good reasons to\u00a0not trust your therapist<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Like any profession, some therapists are just not good at what they do.<\/strong> Or they simply don&#8217;t like their job, which reflects in how they are around clients. If the following signs of unprofessionalism sound familiar, it is time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quitting-therapy.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fire your therapist<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they talk about themselves frequently in sessions<\/li>\n<li>they are disrespectful, engaging in behaviours like answering the phone or eating in sessions, starting late, interrupting you when you are speaking, or\u00a0cancelling your appointments at the last minute<\/li>\n<li>they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">criticise you<\/a> or put you down<\/li>\n<li>they don&#8217;t take your concerns seriously or even belittle them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If a therapist ever does something inappropriate such as a sexual advance,<\/strong> not only should you feel free to leave immediately. But you might consider filing a complaint with the relevant licensing boards (in the UK, this would be the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BACP<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychotherapy.org.uk\">UKCP<\/a><\/span>\u00a0&#8211; look into where the therapist is registered).<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you do find you&#8217;re having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-always-have-bad-luck.htm\">bad luck<\/a> finding a therapist, consider an umbrella organisation over hiring an individual therapist<\/strong>. They will vet their therapists very carefully.
