When you are secretly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sad<\/a> or just not yourself now your kids are not at home? Parents can have the back-to-school blues too.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Why do I have the back-to-school blues?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So why are you the one<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\"> feeling so low<\/a> and not able to be like the other parents? And when is it a sign of something more serious if you aren&#8217;t coping without your kids?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. You don&#8217;t like change.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Some of us by nature need consistency, <\/strong>and seem born to just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hate change<\/span><\/a>. We are the ones who even balk at things like vacations and adventures. We go through a sort of &#8216;adjustment period&#8217; even with changes we know are coming, like back-to-school time.<\/p>\n<p><b>It can help to <\/b>learn healthy <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">tactics for dealing with change.<\/a><\/span> This can include letting yourself have that good cry if you are upset that the kids are growing up and another summer is over.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>When to worry: <\/strong><\/span>Does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">life change<\/a> always trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">extreme anxiety<\/a> for you? To the effect things like your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\">sleep<\/a> and ability to cope suffer?\u00a0 A\u00a0deep-rooted<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-change.htm\"> fear of change<\/a>\u00a0can be related to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ptsd-in-children.htm\">traumatic change as a child<\/a> that hasn&#8217;t been processed, or a childhood with no real security. Dealing with these experiences can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-be-brave-fear.htm\">give us more courage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. And your friends all have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/my-job-is-killing-me-losing-the-will-to-live.htm\">busy careers<\/a> and you feel left behind?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When to worry:<\/span><\/strong> Sometimes we have just never had a significant period of time in life where we were by ourselves. We need to simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-time-alone.htm\">learn to be alone<\/a> . But if being alone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\">triggers anxiety<\/a> and emotional pain? And you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">feel panicky<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">desperate for distraction<\/a>? It&#8217;s likely to be unresolved issues. Dealing with them will improve not only<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\"> your relationship with yourself<\/a>, but your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mature-relationships.htm\"> relationships with others<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. You only like your family, and having to seek a social life stresses you out.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Is it not just that the kids are gone,<\/strong> but that now they are, you are faced with that yawning truth that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">don&#8217;t really have friends<\/a>? Or don&#8217;t even much want them?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not all of us find having a social life<\/strong> outside of family easy. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">connection<\/a>, like it or not, is good for us. And we aren&#8217;t kids or teens anymore, pressured to hang around with certain people. We are adults, free to fully be ourselves and meet people who actually share our exact interests. Look to places like Meetup.com and local community centres to find interest groups you like and push yourself to get out there.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When to worry:<\/span> <\/strong>If you find you don&#8217;t want to leave the house alone at all, or have panic attacks around social events? Look into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">signs of social anxiety<\/a>. Sometimes it&#8217;s not really that we don&#8217;t like other people, it&#8217;s that we have this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/women-mental-health.htm\">mental health issue<\/a> which controls our thinking but can be treated.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>4. <\/strong>You personally always hated going back to school and this time of year.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Do you have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nostalgia-good-or-bad.htm\"> childhood memories<\/a> of amazing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/summer-depression.htm\">endless summers<\/a> always ruined by the boredom of school? Or did you dread September as it meant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boarding-school-survivor.htm\">being sent back to boarding school<\/a>? If so, you might be experiencing the back-to-school blues as it&#8217;s a mood your body is trained to connect to all things school.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When to worry<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 If you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\"> experienced trauma<b> <\/b>as a child<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">bullying<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">inappropriate attention from a teacher<\/a>, or deep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/abandonment-issues.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feelings of abandonment<\/span><\/a> at being shipped off to boarding school? And now often experience September anxiety as an adult? Such experiences can have a long-term affect unless we take the time to acknowledge and process them and reclaim our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">self worth<\/span><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Can you have an honest chat with your partner about splitting the school gate visits? Join forces with a neighbouring mother where you take turns taking all the kids in?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When to worry<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 If the reason the school gates cause so much stress is because you worry excessively what others think of you, this is different than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\">being an introvert<\/a>. It&#8217;s a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">low self-esteem<\/span><\/a> that needs to be dealt with. Low self-esteem is a leading contributor to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">depression<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Your kids are not happy at school and it stresses you out so much.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes our kids really are not happy going to school, <\/strong>don&#8217;t fit in, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\">have learning differences<\/a> that make things a challenge for them. It is normal to be worried for them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it&#8217;s also important to make sure we are not<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-projecting-feelings.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> projecting our own feelings<\/span><\/a> <\/strong>about school being awful onto our kids. This can happen if we ourselves had a hard time with school and always had the back-to-school blues.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When to worry:<\/span><\/strong> If your child is really unhappy at school, consider finding outside private support for your child. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/child-psychologist-london.htm\">child psychologist<\/a> can create a safe space for your child to express their frustrations in a way they might not do with you for fear of upsetting you, and help them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-for-teens.htm\">raise their self-esteem<\/a>. Also note that you have the right to hire a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-educational-psychologist.htm\">private educational psychologist<\/a> should the school refuse to test your child for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-learning-difficulties.htm\">learning difficulties<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. You rely on your kids to keep you feeling good.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Parents get a lot of joy from their kids. And that\u2019s normal. But if they are your only real source of joy, or if you see your kids as friends instead of just your children? Then there can be things that need addressing for both you and your child&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">wellbeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When to worry &#8211; <\/span><\/strong>If you were<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-to-do-if-you-feel-depressed.htm\"> depressed<\/a> before having kids but feel your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">life has meaning<\/a> only now you have them? It&#8217;s a lot of pressure on our children, and can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">codependent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0relating that can leave a child with relationship and self-esteem issues in the future.
