Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Guilt, according to evolutionary psychology<\/strong>, was the brain&#8217;s way of making sure we didn&#8217;t veer into behaviour that would leave us ostracised from the tribe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And even nowadays a little guilt is a good thing. <\/strong>Not having any is a worrying sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/machiavellianism-psychology.htm\">sociopathy<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\">narcissistic personality disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>But what if you feel guilty all the time?<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>When &#8220;I feel guilty!&#8221; is out of control<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A \u2018guilt complex\u2019 (more correctly referred to as \u2018false guilt\u2019)<\/strong> \u2018happens when we feel at blame <em>even when we aren&#8217;t sure we did anything wrong<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It looks like: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worrying-to-much.htm\">constantly worrying<\/a> you\u2019ve upset others<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stop-overthinking.htm\">always analysing<\/a> if you could have done things better<\/li>\n<li>feeling guilty for things you didn\u2019t even actually do<\/li>\n<li>or for simply<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\"> having bad thoughts<\/a><\/li>\n<li>taking responsibility if others are in a bad mood<\/li>\n<li>using the terms \u2018should have\u2019 and \u2018could have\u2019 often<\/li>\n<li>letting one small thing that went wrong turn into a day of intense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dangers-criticism-realise.htm\">self-criticism<\/a><\/li>\n<li>a constant belief that if things are not going well, it\u2019s down to something you must have said or done<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\"> blaming others<\/a> or practising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\">psychological projection<\/a> (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/defence-mechanisms.htm\">defence mechanism<\/a> against guilt)<\/li>\n<li>feeling bad not just for what you might have done, but for who you are.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>But why do I feel guilty all the time?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy-techniques.htm\">Cognitive therapy<\/a> <strong>sees guilt as arising from a set of negative<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\">core beliefs.<\/a> These beliefs lead us to mistakenly see everything through the lens of, \u201cI cause people to suffer\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you get such negative ideas of yourself and the world?<\/strong> Generally we <span style=\"color: #333399;\">develop our belief system as a child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Mimicking guilt.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It might be that you learned guilt by <em>mimicking. <\/em>You saw the example set by adults<\/strong> around you and followed it. For example,\u00a0 you had a parent who always wailed that things were his or her fault, and learned that being guilty is how you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attention-seeking-behaviour.htm\">gain attention from others<\/a>. Or you grew up in a very Christian community, where feeling guilty might be something you learned gave you worth.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">2. This can look like, \u2018why do you have to drive me crazy\u2019, \u2018why can\u2019t you be like your brother\/sister\u2019. Or &#8216;why did I ever decide to be a parent\u2019.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Parents can manipulate a child into a guilt-ridden mindset even if their intention <\/strong>is to be \u2018good parents\u2019. This comes from the sort of caregiving where a parent or guardian is unable to accept the child fully as they are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They will encourage the child to be \u2018well-behaved\u2019 in<\/strong> order to \u2018earn\u2019 affection or attention.\u00a0And what happens when the then child feels any \u2018not perfect\u2019 things? Sadness or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-in-children-how-can-you-help.htm\">anger<\/a>, for example? The child feels racked with guilt. Worse, he or she shoves their real self so deep inside that they grow up as adults who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">lack boundaries<\/a> or have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity issues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Guilt as a response to trauma.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes the only way a child\u2019s mind can process a terrible trauma<\/strong> is to decide they somehow caused it. This means lower self-esteem, one of the main triggers of depression.
