Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s normal and healthy to sometimes be very emotional.<\/strong> Big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">life challenges<\/a> can evoke big reactions. And we all have tired days when we can react too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>But are you constantly accused of overreacting?<\/p>\n<p><strong>An overreactive personality type tends to come with marked and consistent symptoms and behaviours. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Choose the answers below that are most like you to determine if you are, or are not, the sort to overreact.<\/p>\n<h3>1. How do you decide what to say?<\/h3>\n<p>A &#8211; Often I only know what I am going to say when I hear myself saying it.<\/p>\n<p>B &#8211; I tend to pause to hear my thoughts, and only say what I am pretty sure about. If I am not sure what I feel I usually ask for time to think.<\/p>\n<h3>2. If you listen to your thoughts, what do they sound like?<\/h3>\n<p>A &#8211; There are a lot of thoughts about other people and how they disappointed me, as well as some self-criticism.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\"> I often think in extremes<\/a> \u2013 things are really great or really awful. I dream of how I wish things were, or remember a past that was better than my life now.<\/p>\n<p>B &#8211; I do think about how things went and why, and consider the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspectives<\/a> of the others involved. I&#8217;m often just thinking about what I have to deal with today, or my current situation. Or I&#8217;m making plans.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Is regret a feeling you often experience?<\/h3>\n<p>A &#8211; I feel regrets about things often, or even daily.<\/p>\n<p>B &#8211; I don&#8217;t often regret things, or maybe do now and then.<\/p>\n<h3>5. What do you feel physically if someone is upset with you, or you think they don&#8217;t like you?<\/h3>\n<p>A &#8211; I feel a hot, burning feeling grow inside me. Or I feel physically weak, even shaky, or like my heart is caving in. Sometimes I feel like I have left my body even and am floating above looking down.<\/p>\n<p>B &#8211; I can feel my heart beat a little, or like I have a dry mouth, but it&#8217;s not overwhelming.<\/p>\n<h3>6. How do you act if someone gets upset with you?<\/h3>\n<p>A &#8211; I tend to cry easily. Sometimes I even run out of the room as it all feels overwhelming. Or I get suddenly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/deal-with-anger-management-techniques.htm\"> angry <\/a>&#8211; but what do people expect if they are treating me badly?<\/p>\n<p>B &#8211; I can listen to what someone is saying behind their firm tone, and sometimes even manage to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">ask questions<\/a> and solve the conflict without needing to get upset.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Some people don&#8217;t like me, because we have a different viewpoint, and that&#8217;s fine.<\/p>\n<h3>8. How often do you go over and over what you said and did in a given situation?<\/h3>\n<p>A -I can&#8217;t help but do this for days or weeks after a conflict. If I don&#8217;t tell all my friends, I play it out secretly in my head.<\/p>\n<p>B &#8211; I might talk things through a few times with friends if there was an upsetting situation, but then I resolve it and move on.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800080;\">What do my choices mean?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>As you might have guessed, &#8216;A&#8217; choices are signs of an overreactive personality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Many people fall somewhere in the middle, meaning you might be sensitive, but not too overreactive. But if you tend toward &#8216;A&#8217; behaviour, then yes, you have an overreactive personality<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Overreactive tendencies tend to come hand-in-hand with other behaviours and symptoms, including: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsive<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">dissociation <\/a> (struggling to stay present in the face of conflict)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>high sensitivity to criticism<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-a-perfectionist.htm\">perfectionism<\/a><\/li>\n<li>struggling to accept the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\"> here and now<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">anger management<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">quick to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">difficulty seeing other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspectives <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">black and white thinking<\/a> and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">cognitive distortions<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>An overreactive personality can also be a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\">adult ADHD<\/a> as well as several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">personality disorders,<\/a><\/strong> especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>, which leaves you with a thin emotional skin, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-histrionic-personality-disorder.htm\">histrionic personality disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why would I be an overreactive type?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Overreacting as an adult can come from a childhood where you were not allowed to relax and be yourself.<\/strong> This could mean that you had a critical parent, a strict parent, or a parent who you had to take care of. A mentally unbalanced or addicted parent means a child is constantly having to walk on eggshells and be &#8216;good&#8217;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">All these parenting styles can lead to a child to grown into an adult who struggles with self-esteem, and is so on edge about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dangers-criticism-realise.htm\">being criticised <\/a>or being hurt that they overreact to any perceived slight.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">Childhood trauma <\/a>can also cause an overreactive personality<\/strong>. Something very painful in your past, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sexual-abuse-help-guide.htm\">abuse<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\">abandonment<\/a>, means you develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/defence-mechanisms.htm\">defence mechanisms<\/a> (and overreacting is simply pushing others away) to protect you from further hurt.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It also means that you have a hidden reservoir of sadness that you can project onto present day experiences. That little insult someone else puts your way triggers years worth of pain, meaning your reaction does not match what is actually happening.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Can therapy help me stop overreacting?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, it can be a big help. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) <\/a>is a great place to start. It is a short-term therapy that helps you recognise and control the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. To deal with childhood trauma such as abuse, a longer term therapy like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychodynamic-psychotherapy.htm\">psychodynamic therapy<\/a> can be a great support.<\/p>\n<h2>I don&#8217;t really match any of this, but my partner keeps calling me overreactive?<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth looking into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\">narcissism<\/a>. If your partner suffers from narcissistic traits or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/narcissistic-personality-disorder.htm\">narcissistic personality disorder<\/a>, they are likely to blame you for being &#8216;overreactive&#8217; every time you respond with reasonable upset to their bad behaviour.<\/p>\n<h4><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">How else can you start curbing your overreacting?
