Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Suspect you were sexually abused as a child?<\/strong> You are far from alone. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/crimeandjustice\/articles\/childsexualabuseinenglandandwales\/yearendingmarch2019\">Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates<\/a> that 7.5% of British adults experienced some form of sexual abuse before the age of 16.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And real rates might be higher,<\/strong> given that it&#8217;s also thought around a third of children abused by an adult tell no one.<\/p>\n<h2>What is sexual abuse?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">It\u2019s important to understand what qualifies as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/abuse-counselling-london.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a> before dismissing an experience you might have had as &#8216;not a big deal&#8217;. In fact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">definitions of child sexual abuse have recently been updated<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>First of all, sexual abuse does not have to be between a child and a &#8216;grownup&#8217;.<\/strong> It can be an older sibling or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-sexual-play-abuse.htm\">another child who abuses you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Abuse doesn&#8217;t even need to involve touch<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It is now recognised that sexual abuse does not even have to involve physicality to be extraordinarily damaging to a child and the future adult they will become. Sexual abuse can can be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">any<\/span> situation where a child is exploited for the sexual pleasure of another.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Called &#8216;non contact&#8217; or &#8216;covert&#8217; sexual abuse, this can look like someone who constantly<\/strong> exposed their body to you, forced you to expose your body, showed you pornography, or constantly talked about sexual things to you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Examples of covert abuse are a <\/strong>father who always talks about a daughter&#8217;s body &#8216;being too sexual&#8217; when she is going through puberty. Or a mother who strips a child and makes them stand naked in their room for hours as &#8216;punishment&#8217; for &#8216;being bad&#8217;. Again, such examples can both result in the same long-term symptoms as other forms of sexual abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Wouldn\u2019t I remember if I was sexually abused as a child?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16135\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/young-girl--400x266.jpg\" alt=\"sexually abused as a child\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/young-girl--400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/young-girl-.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/young-girl--180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Victims of sexual abuse often do<em> not<\/em> remember the experience. <\/strong>A wiped out memory for certain parts of your childhood can be an indicator trauma of some form took place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children can&#8217;t just walk away if they find themselves<\/strong> in a difficult or terrifying situation. So &#8216;forgetting&#8217; becomes your brain&#8217;s way of surviving and coping. And we carry this coping mechanism into adulthood.<\/p>\n<h2>So have I been sexually abused? Knowing the signs<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Sexual abuse can cause long-term issues in your behaviours, relationships, and <\/span>sex life, as well as in the ways you treat yourself. It can even effect your physical wellbeing.<\/p>\n<h3>Trauma symptoms<\/h3>\n<p>Being sexually abused as a child can cause long-term symptoms of trauma, now called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">complex post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a>&#8216; or &#8216;c-PTSD&#8217;. \u00a0This can look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy thinking<\/a><\/li>\n<li>restlessness<\/li>\n<li>memory loss around the trauma<\/li>\n<li>vigilance &#8211; more jumpy with noises and surprises than others are<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">emotional outbursts<\/a><\/li>\n<li>not liking certain places\/situations\/smells\/sounds without knowing why<\/li>\n<li>deep feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Relationship symptoms<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">Healthy relationships<\/a> tend to be very challenging if you experienced sexual abuse as a child. Do you experience some of the following?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">trust issues<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">fear of intimacy<\/a><\/li>\n<li>trouble <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">setting boundaries<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">saying no<\/a><\/li>\n<li>easily<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-anxiety.htm\"> stressed by relationships<\/a><\/li>\n<li>often<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\"> overwhelmed by emotions<\/a><\/li>\n<li>resentment and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anger-management-help-guide.htm\"> anger issues<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You might also constantly attract relationships which \u2018re-enact\u2019 abuse.<\/strong> This can look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/great-codependency-hoax-codependent.htm\">codependency<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">emotional abuse<\/a><\/li>\n<li>attracting those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\">traits of narcissism<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/narcissistic-personality-disorder.htm\">NPD<\/a><\/li>\n<li>always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/live-life-like-victim-12-ways-tell.htm\">playing the victim<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Sex symptoms<\/h3>\n<p>Sexual abuse as a child can also really affect the way you approach sex. Do you recognise yourself in the following?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-myths-about-sex-addiction.htm\">promiscuity<\/a><\/li>\n<li>or fear or dislike of sex<\/li>\n<li>being a \u2018pleaser\u2019 sexually and not knowing what you really want<\/li>\n<li>confusion around your sexual identity<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">dissociation <\/a>during sex (like you \u2018leave your body\u2019 and watch from above)<\/li>\n<li>needing to escape into fantasy in order to enjoy sex<\/li>\n<li>having sexual fantasies where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexually-abusive-relationship.htm\">you are abused<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sexual-assault-long-term-psychological-effects-survivors-need-know.htm\">raped<\/a><\/li>\n<li>constantly using innuendo in conversation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_16136\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/335013569_3efcbc7d3c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16136\" class=\" wp-image-16136\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/335013569_3efcbc7d3c.jpg\" alt=\"sexual abuse as a child\" width=\"320\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rieorie\/335013569\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Rie H<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Physical symptoms from being abuse as a child<\/h3>\n<p>Being sexually abused as a child or adolescent can lead to physical symptoms such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">obesity<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">constantly having small injuries<\/a><\/li>\n<li>constant low grade illnesses like cold and flu<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">unexplained medical symptoms <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">feeling totally disconnected from your body<\/a><\/li>\n<li>high pain tolerance<\/li>\n<li>feeling oddly dirty or itchy all the time<\/li>\n<li>or that you can\u2019t trust your body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Related psychological conditions<\/h2>\n<p>The trauma of sexual abuse leads to many other psychological issues. Do you feel you might also suffer from some of the following?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">depression<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\">sleep disorders<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\">eating disorders<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-harm-help-guide.htm\">self-harm<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-suicide.htm\">suicidal thinking<\/a><\/li>\n<li>low <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boost-low-self-esteem-counsellor.htm\">self-esteem<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity crisis<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\">addictions<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sexual-problems-help-guide.htm\">sexual problems<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attacks<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">OCD<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And finally, sexual abuse is linked to the manifestation of certain personality disorders<\/strong>, in particular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-histrionic-personality-disorder.htm\">histrionic personality disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The connection is so high that some psychologists debate if these disorders exist at all or are really just manifestations of trauma, with some <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2215036619301270\">calling to rebrand BPD as complex trauma<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>I think I was abused as a child. What do I do now?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">If you do suspect you were sexually abused as a child, you might find yourself suddenly experiencing overwhelming waves of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\">anger and fury<\/a>. It is highly advised you don&#8217;t react by immediately contacting and accusing all the people who might have abused you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>You will be doing this from a vulnerable place, <\/strong>and can put yourself at risk of attack and manipulation. You might even in the process alienate yourself from other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/keeping-secrets-from-family.htm\">family<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friends<\/a> whose support you count on, right when you need them most. It&#8217;s better to first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/trauma-counselling-london.htm\">seek support<\/a> to help you process what you are dealing with, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">make big decisions<\/a> from a stable and secure place.<\/p>\n<p>[Our article on &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-think-i-was-abused-as-a-child.htm\">What to do if you think you were abused<\/a>&#8216; goes into more detail].<\/p>\n<h2>Seek support first<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The symptoms above are comprehensive, but note that it&#8217;s not just<\/strong> sexual abuse which leads to these sign of trauma. Many<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\"> difficult childhood experiences<\/a> can result in similar symptoms. Support can help you get clearer on what the root cause really is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reach out to<\/strong> good friends you trust.
