Or does your lack of decisiveness leave those you love constantly frustrated with you?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>If decision-making skills are a real struggle for you it could be related to one of the following psychological issues.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. Low self-esteem<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you concerned what people around you will think of your decision?<\/li>\n<li>Do you fret you will make the \u2018wrong\u2019 decision yet again?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel dread or even fear when faced with decision-making?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/low-self-esteem-counselling-london.htm\">Low self-esteem<\/a> means that somewhere along the line you have taken on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\"> core belief<\/a> that you don\u2019t do anything right. Any decision will be perceived as yet another chance for you to &#8216;mess up&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of self-esteem can stem from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>. This can include things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\">bullying<\/a>, not developing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-styles.htm\">proper attachment<\/a> to a caregiver, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/were-you-sexually-abused-as-a-child.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Perfectionism<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you often find that all options are lacking? Or wish you could combine options?<\/li>\n<li>Do people tell you to stop &#8216;over analysing it&#8217;?<\/li>\n<li>Do you often regret decisions and worry the other option was indeed better?<\/li>\n<li>Do you sometimes delay a decision so much in the end you just settle for anything?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_16262\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16262\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16262\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/673233474_95d91bc6c8-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"decision making skills\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/673233474_95d91bc6c8-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/673233474_95d91bc6c8.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/restlessglobetrotter\/673233474\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Jason Rogers<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-a-perfectionist.htm\">Perfectionism<\/a> will mean each decision in life feels a sort of test, yet you often feel disappointed with the outcome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Living life from a perfectionist perspective can be learned behaviour <\/strong>from a very demanding parent. Or it can relate to a childhood where you were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dangers-criticism-realise.htm\">always criticised<\/a>, or where you felt you had to \u2018earn\u2019 love by being \u2018good\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Depression<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do decisions just feel overwhelming in general?<br \/>\nDo you feel exhausted and like you could fall asleep when you have to decide on things?<\/li>\n<li>Do you do what you can to avoid being asked to make decisions in the first place?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\">mild depression<\/a> can seriously impair your decision making skills. You can feel like your brain is made of sand. <a href=\"https:\/\/bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/bjc.12069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2014 study<\/a> suggested that depression not only stopped intuitive reasoning, it led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking <\/a>patterns that stifled any hopes of creative brainstorming.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Anxiety disorders<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you feel completely panicky when faced with decisions?<\/li>\n<li>Can you overthink a small decision into something that seems life or death?<\/li>\n<li>Do you tend to take what seems to be the &#8216;safe&#8217; option at the cost of never doing what you want?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">Anxiety is different than stress<\/a> in that it has no obvious cause, but is a free floating sense of worry haunting your days. Because it causes so many distracting thoughts, it leaves you unable to think things through well and more prone to make poor decisions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> anxiety disorders<\/a> can be again related to childhood trauma. It causes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\"> impulsivity<\/a>, which means you might have made rash decisions in the past that have affected your capacity to trust yourself to now choose wisely.<\/p>\n<p>With symptoms that manifest slightly differently than in children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-adhd-in-adults.htm\">ADHD in adults<\/a> can be overlooked (read our article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\">Adult ADHD symptoms<\/a> for more, or our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/adhd-help-guide.htm\">comprehensive guide to ADHD<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3>I can actually see myself in more than one of these issues?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Several of the above issues can be connected.<\/strong> ADHD often comes with a streak of perfectionism and can lead to low self-esteem, for example. And low self-esteem and anxiety can be forerunners of depression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A mental health professional, like a counsellor or psychotherapist, can help you understand which mix of issues you have that are making decision-making such a challenge for you.<\/strong> In the case of attention deficit, you will need to see a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/adult-attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder-treament-london.htm\"> psychiatrist who specialises in adult ADHD<\/a> for a proper diagnosis.<\/p>\n<h3>But surely I don\u2019t need professional help just to make better decisions.<\/h3>\n<p>Decisions are pretty powerful.
