Or are they just marketing trends from companies seeking to cash in?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Not really sure what mindfulness really is?<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Mindfulness is the practise of continuously bringing your attention to the present moment and to what you are thinking, feeling, and experiencing right here and now. <\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\">It derives from ancient Eastern practises but is a modern offshoot that is non-denominational and can be practised by anyone. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>You don&#8217;t have to be meditating to be mindful.<\/strong> You can practise mindfulness when you are doing something as simple as brushing your teeth, for example.<\/p>\n<h3>What is the link between Colouring, Origami, and mindfulness?<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_16411\" style=\"width: 328px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16411\" class=\" wp-image-16411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6107353399_f02b40962c-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"mindfulness colouring\" width=\"318\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6107353399_f02b40962c-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6107353399_f02b40962c-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6107353399_f02b40962c.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6107353399_f02b40962c-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6107353399_f02b40962c-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6107353399_f02b40962c-191x191.jpg 191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spirit-fire\/6107353399\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Spirit-Fire<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Colouring and origami require you to focus on what your hands are doing, meaning your mind is occupied and you are pulled into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">the present moment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So in this way, <strong>origami and colouring books can induce a calm feeling that might be called a &#8216;mindful state&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>But is it <em>really<\/em> mindfulness?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>In all honesty, no. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, the two activities encourage<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> present-moment awareness<\/a>. But that is not, in and of itself, what mindfulness is.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Mindfulness, remembering our definition, involves<\/strong> <strong>being aware of what you are feeling and experiencing.<\/strong> <strong>It is about <em>awareness<\/em> and <em>acceptance<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Colouring and origami bring you into the present, but can more easily be used as a distraction to <em>escape<\/em> your emotions and experience! This is why such activities can feel &#8216;addictive&#8217;. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Just because an activity takes you away from you thoughts does not make it mindfulness.<\/strong> Otherwise we&#8217;d have to include as &#8216;mindfulness&#8217; fishing, dancing, exercise&#8230;. even drinking and drug taking, which are the opposite of mindfulness.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Colouring books for adults and origami kits, even if they are marketed as mindfulness, are simply incomparable to the real practice of cultivating a daily practise of mindfulness meditation and working to <em>constantly acknowledge and accept what each passing moment brings.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But before you write off colouring and origami &#8211; it turns out they do have other psychological benefits <\/strong>worth mentioning.<\/p>\n<h3>The psychological benefits of origami and colouring<\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1. We fret about what we deem we did wrong in the past, and panic about could will happen next.<\/p>\n<p>Again, origami and colouring do bring you into the present moment. And stress &#8216;doesn&#8217;t live there&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. They help you feel more in control. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anxiety, which arises from stress, is a feeling of being out-of-control. Origami and colouring put you in the drivers seat, even if it&#8217;s just for a half hour or so. It offers you a soothing sense of organisation, being grounded, and being in charge.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3. They contains built-in achievement. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stress, anxiety, and depression can be caused by a feeling that we never seem to &#8216;get anywhere&#8217;. Goals seem to shift before we can reach them, or we are involved with long-term things that just feel exhausting.<\/p>\n<p>Origami and colouring have a distinct beginning and end and bring a visually satisfying result that just feels like a win, however small.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. It can be used to connect to others. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been shown in studies that giving to others, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\">volunteering<\/a>, improves our mood, and that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/understanding-people.htm\">feeling connected to others <\/a>alleviates depression.<\/p>\n<p>Origami is not only something you can do with others, you can give the finished result as a gift.
