Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tell yourself at the end of every December that it&#8217;s time for a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-goals.htm\">New Year<\/a>, new you&#8221;? Only to end up being the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-wrong-with-me.htm\">flawed person<\/a> as always?<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\">Why does nothing change<\/a> for you, and what can be done?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Why &#8216;New Year, new you&#8217; hasn&#8217;t worked out<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Many of us seem to just give up on ourselves if <\/strong>our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/5-reasons-your-new-years-resolutions-never-work.htm\">resolutions don&#8217;t work<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/society\/articles-reports\/2021\/12\/29\/what-new-years-resolutions-are-people-setting-2022\">survey by Yougov<\/a> in the UK found, for example, that while when aged 18 to 24 over a third of us set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">yearly goals<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\">by aged 55<\/a> only ten percent of us still bother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We miss the crucial fact that our progress isn&#8217;t happening not because we are useless <\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\">can&#8217;t change<\/a>, but because we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-schema-psychology.htm\">stuck in a pattern<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Patterns come from the past, from unresolved experiences. And they can, with some effort and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">honesty<\/a>, be changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Changing patterns is indeed so powerful than an entire form of therapy<\/strong>, called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/schema-therapy-london.htm\">schema therapy&#8217;<\/a>, is formed around the concept of recognising and changing patterns.<\/p>\n<h2>How to actually break the pattern this year<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Having a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\"> breakthrough<\/a> means getting really honest, and taking stock of yourself and your life. How does this best work?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Drop the self-judgement. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;New Year, new you&#8221; might sound positive, but it also implies the old you was<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-not-good-enough.htm\">not good enough<\/a>. So first, note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">self-criticism<\/a> stops us from taking action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, think about what it&#8217;s like when <\/strong>your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-my-boss-a-sociopath.htm\">boss suddenly yells at you<\/a>. Many of us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freeze-response.htm\">go blank and freeze<\/a>, or enter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/denial-in-psychology.htm\">denial<\/a> and protest. Regardless of our response of choice, the end result is the same. No wonder you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">never achieve your goals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> Start the process of a New Year, new you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">gratitude<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-hard-on-yourself.htm\">self appreciation<\/a>. Write down five things that happened in the last year that you are actually proud of, and five things you actually like about yourself lately. <\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Now take an honest inventory.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Pretending difficult things we lived through were no big deal might help us cope <\/strong>in the short-term. But in the long term, the emotions and beliefs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-memories-are-they-real.htm\">unresolved experiences<\/a> not only can hold us back. They can leave us with constant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if we don&#8217;t deal with an experience, we are more likely to then go and repeat it. For example, <\/strong>let&#8217;s say you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\"> left a relationship<\/a> this year where you were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">emotionally <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">abused,<\/a> and try to just \u2018forget about it\u2019.\u00a0 It&#8217;s highly likely you&#8217;ll just walk right into another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">unhealthy relationship<\/a>.\u00a0 Why? You didn&#8217;t use the experience as a chance to heal the root cause that sees you choosing such relationships, like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\"> unresolved childhood experiences.<\/a> Or heal the issues it gave you, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>. So the cycle just repeats.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> Sit down and <strong>make an honest list<\/strong> of what you experienced in the past year (or past few years if you prefer) that you found upsetting. The things that hurt, the things you wish didn\u2019t happen, the things you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> feel ashamed of<\/a> or confused about.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Ask good questions.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>You are now going to take your list of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\"> difficult experiences<\/a> and turn them into gifts by <\/strong>asking very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">good questions<\/a>. This will help you understand, process, and learn from each one, so you can make different choices in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-have-more-energy.htm\">this New Year<\/a> you are entering.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> For each item on your \u2018difficult\u2019 list, ask useful questions that begin with \u2018what\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019 (avoid &#8216;why&#8217; questions tend to be rabbit holes or lead to self-judgement). It is best done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">in a journal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> For example:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How did I find myself in this situation? What steps led to it?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions <\/a>did I make here about myself and others?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>What <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">boundary<\/a> did I need to set here that I didn\u2019t? <\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>How might a part of this experience in all honesty be something I actually chose?\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>What do I need to forgive myself for here?\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How could I do things differently if I ever end up in a similar situation?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What did I learn from this that is useful for future choices?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Identify the pattern.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">When you look at what went wrong for you this last year, are there things that you honestly have experienced for many years before this one, too? Do you, for example, always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-unavailable.htm\">chase unavailable partners<\/a> as your parents were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/workaholic-symptoms.htm\">workaholics<\/a> who had no time for you?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">Schema therapy<\/a> suggests there are 18 main patterns we can be trapped in, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/people-pleaser-meaning.htm\">self-sacrifice<\/a> (always putting ourselves last) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">mistrust<\/a> (assuming the worst of everyone).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Mourn a little. Go on.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2010-25086-018\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Research supports<\/span><\/a> the idea that emotional expression promotes wellbeing and health in many stressful situations. The more emotion you can let go of, the better your chance of actually moving on. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> Spend an evening at home letting yourself have a little funeral for all the tragedies of the past year. Cry it out, dance it out, punch a pillow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/journal-writing.htm\">journal<\/a>, whatever it takes. If you want, do a ritual where you bury or burn a paper with all of your difficult experiences listed on it, all the things you want to move on from.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Find the values and live them to have a New Year, new you at last<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hidden within the way all of these experiences have affected you, and all the choices you have<\/strong> made over the last year, for better and worse? Is a very powerful force indeed. This is your <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal value system<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The easiest way to feel good within ourselves and our lives is to align all of our choices and actions with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">values.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What have these experiences you went through shown you about what you actually care about?<\/strong> Regardless of what your family, friends, or colleagues care about or think?\u00a0 This could look like safety, freedom, charity. Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">connection<\/a>, generosity, privacy, calm, excitement&#8230;. don&#8217;t judge yourself.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ACTION STEP:<\/strong> Write out all the things you now think you actually might value. If you aren&#8217;t sure, write whatever comes to mind, then read the list aloud. What ones feel good to say? These are likely your values. What things could you choose to work toward in this New Year that would actually match those personal values?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Need support to finally move your life forward this year?
