There might be valid reasons why.<\/p>\n<h2>5 Reasons your New Year&#8217;s resolutions fail<\/h2>\n<p>So what would those reasons be, and what are the things you can do to finally<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-new-you-try-this.htm\"> break the pattern<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\">move forward<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">1. You have limiting core beliefs.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\">Core beliefs <\/a>are deep-rooted <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions<\/a> about ourselves, others, and the world that we form based on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">experiences as a child<\/a>. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unless we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">question the validity of such beliefs<\/a>, we unconsciously mistake them for facts and live our lives in service to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, if you grew up in an unstable environment, you might have a core belief that<\/strong> &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">the world is a dangerous place<\/a>&#8216;. No matter how many times you try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-want-to-fall-in-love-how-to.htm\">fall in love<\/a> or feel secure in life, you will instead make choices like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-unavailable.htm\">picking partners that are unreliable<\/a>, or living situations with many problems. This confirms that the world is, indeed, dangerous, and the cycle continues.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions<\/a> do you make about the way the world works?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Can you identify what childhood experience created such assumptions?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What would happen if the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\"> core beliefs these assumptions<\/a> represent were not true? And what could be true instead?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. There is unresolved trauma in your life. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Constantly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\"> sabotage yourself<\/a> no matter how hard you try not to? Repeat the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/decision-making-skills-mental-health.htm\">bad decisions<\/a> despite promising &#8216;never again&#8217;? Behave in ways that mean relationships and opportunities never quite work out? Regardless of when the difficult experience took place, the unresolved emotions it created can leave you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-move-forward-this-year.htm\">unable to move forward<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Is there an experience I had recently or as a child I feel uncomfortable thinking about?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Are my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">reactions<\/a> and emotions often bigger than an occasion warrants?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do I suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-warning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\">emotional shock<\/a> without an apparent cause?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">3.Negative thinking is blocking your New Year&#8217;s resolutions.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16599 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinking-cycle-400x280.png\" alt=\"new years resolutions\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinking-cycle-400x280.png 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinking-cycle-500x350.png 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinking-cycle.png 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">Negative thinking<\/a> sets off what is known in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-distortions-cbt.htm\">negative &#8216;loop&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The idea is that a<\/strong> negative thought creates a negative feeling or negative bodily sensations.\u00a0 Which in turn create a negative behaviour, which creates another negative thought, and the cycle continues.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\">Negative thoughts<\/a> can not only keep you going in circles, it can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-and-depression.htm\">ongoing depression<\/a> that leaves you listless and unable to move forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not sure you practice negative thinking? Look out for<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">cognitive distortions<\/a>\u2019, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">black and white thinking<\/a>, \u2018should\u2019 statements, and jumping to conclusions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What kind of thoughts do I have on a daily basis?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Am I using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">cognitive distortions<\/a>?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do I immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assume the worse<\/a>?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Your planning skills need troubleshooting.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>And then, of course, there is just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">setting goals badly<\/a>.<\/strong> This includes goals that don\u2019t match your abilities, would take much more time than you\u2019ve allowed, or in any other way don\u2019t fit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">the SMART guideline for goal setting<\/a> (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time framed).<\/p>\n<p><strong> It also includes choosing goals that simply don\u2019t match your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a>. These are the things that are the most important to you in life, whether that is charity or wealth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-be-successful-in-life.htm\">success<\/a> or freedom.
