Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> are very real and can persist long into adulthood if proper support is not sought.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t believe it? Science now shows that childhood trauma actually affects your brain.<\/p>\n<h2>How the brain develops<\/h2>\n<p>Although the bulk of it develops while in the womb, <strong>your brain continues to grow and build itself. Neural connections form throughout your life. <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Scientists can&#8217;t say exactly what percentage of your brain is developed by what age. But it&#8217;s sure that childhood is a crucial period of growth. It&#8217;s estimated that in the first few years of life, your brain forms from 700 to 1,000 neural connections <i>every second. <\/i>And these connections form the foundation for further brain development. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What sorts of childhood trauma effects the brain?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Any kind of abuse<\/strong> \u2013 physical abuse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-abusive-relationships.htm\">emotional abuse<\/a> \u2013 is very traumatic for a child and will affect brain development.<\/p>\n<p>Other experiences that are very traumatic for children include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>neglect and\/or extreme poverty<\/li>\n<li>a violent household<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/children-and-grief.htm\">losing a parent or sibling<\/a><\/li>\n<li>a mentally ill or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\"> addicted parent<\/a><\/li>\n<li>experiencing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-as-a-result-of-natural-disasters.htm\">natural disaster <\/a>or war.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">What if you grew up in a &#8216;good family home&#8217; but have all the signs of trauma? You might not have received what in psychology is referred to as &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-styles.htm\">proper attachment<\/a>&#8216;. It&#8217;s very traumatic for a child to not feel loved, supported, and safe. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Lack of Proper Attachment and Brain Development<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_16758\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16758\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16758\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3792906411_d3f8762924-400x281.jpg\" alt=\"effects of trauma on brain\" width=\"400\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3792906411_d3f8762924-400x281.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3792906411_d3f8762924.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/neilconway\/3792906411\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Neil Conway<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">Attachment theory <\/a>states that <em>for a child to grow up into an adult who can confidently form healthy relationships with others, they need a strong and reliable bond with a caregiver for the first few years of their life. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>This means that when, as a child, you cried, or gestured, or otherwise tried to express your needs, an adult responded in an appropriate way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps they picked you up and held you, or spoke to you, or otherwise let you know that your needs would be met and you were safe.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">This kind of supportive back-and-forth between a child and an adult is called &#8216;serve and return interaction&#8217; and is not just important for your psychological development as an infant &#8211; it is crucial for the healthy development of your brain. Each time a positive interaction takes place between a child and adult neural connections are built. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>If these healthy interactions did not take place<\/strong> &#8212; if the person taking care of you was unreliable, unable to love and care for you, or not well &#8212; it means these neural pathways may not form as strongly, meaning your mental and emotional health may be impaired as adult.<\/p>\n<h2>So if my parents were awful now and then, it affected my brain?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>No parent is perfect, and some research shows that a child needs a variation in the response he or she receives from adults <\/strong>in order to realise they are a separate human and to move towards learning how to problem solve and be independent. Some<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\"> stress <\/a>is part of healthy development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s only when<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\"> the stress response<\/a> is triggered too often, or rarely has a chance to shut off<\/strong>, that the physiological reactions of the body can become a threat to brain development.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">In summary, children don&#8217;t need a &#8216;perfect childhood&#8217;. Children do, however, need to feel loved and accepted no matter their behaviour, and they do need support to deal with stress. Studies on animals also found that trauma actually damaged neurons.<\/p>\n<p>And not receiving the care and affection you required as a child also would see you experiencing the physiological effects of stress.<\/p>\n<p><em>One of the side effects of the body&#8217;s primordial stress response is a flooding of hormones throughout the body, such as increased levels of cortisol and norepinephrine. These hormones can sometimes be another source of harm to the child&#8217;s brain architecture.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What are the symptoms that childhood trauma has affected your brain?<\/h2>\n<p>Symptoms as an adult that could mean childhood trauma has affected your brain development can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>learning difficulties including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">focus issues<\/a><\/li>\n<li>behavioural problems<\/li>\n<li>self regulation (ability to control yourself)<\/li>\n<li>emotional and psychological health issues<\/li>\n<li>memory problems<\/li>\n<li>poor planning and prioritising abilities<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/procrastination-big-deal.htm\">procrastination<\/a><\/li>\n<li>lack of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\"> resilience<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">issues with social skills<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">relating to others<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Suffering trauma as a child can also mean that as an adult your body physically responds to stress more than it should<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3181836\/\">Research looking at the effects of traumatic stress on the brain<\/a> found that those with PTSD had higher than usual hormonal levels in response to stress, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">dysregulation<\/a>&#8216;, including increased levels of cortisol.<\/p>\n<h2>Psychological issues related to childhood trauma<\/h2>\n<p>The psychological issues that have been related to the effects of trauma on the brain include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\">Adult ADHD<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-anxiety.htm\">Anxiety<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">depression<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">dissociation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsivity<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-esteem-help-guide.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ptsd-in-children.htm\">PTSD<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-depression.htm\">high stress levels<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">personality disorders <\/a>like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">BPD<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\">substance abuse<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Are all my problems down to childhood trauma?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>No, DNA is also a factor. <\/strong>You are born with certain brain circuits. But the way these circuits develop does depend on the serve and return interactions you experienced.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">You are basically born with the potential to develop behaviours and skills. But whether or not and how these skills develop for you is dependent on how you are nurtured and what your childhood experiences are.
