What is this about, and how does it affect you?<\/p>\n<h2>What is a &#8216;registered therapist&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p>A registered therapist is a counsellor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-a-counselling-psychologist-right-for-me.htm\">counselling psychologist<\/a>, or psychotherapist <strong>who has attained the sufficient advanced level of education, training, and level of experience to be offered a membership with a <\/strong>regulatory board or &#8216;association&#8217; in their country.<\/p>\n<p>Psychotherapists, counsellors, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling-psychologist-london.htm\">counselling psychologists in the UK<\/a> <strong>can be registered with more than one institution.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>But can I trust these regulatory boards?<\/h2>\n<p>The main membership associations in the UK for counsellors, counselling psychologists, and psychotherapists are highly established and reliable institutions. They are all themselves listed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.professionalstandards.org.uk\/\">Professional Standards Authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why should I care if a therapist is registered somewhere?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, therapy associations in the UK act as support systems for therapists, but <strong>really they exist for you the client. <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The membership associations for therapists exist to make sure counselling and psychotherapy is an accessible, safe, and useful experience for general public. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_17035\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/12207640965_eded0cdf53.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17035\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17035\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/12207640965_eded0cdf53-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"registered therapist\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/12207640965_eded0cdf53-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/12207640965_eded0cdf53.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/12207640965_eded0cdf53-180x120.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nfwm\/12207640965\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">National Farm Worker Ministry<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>They achieve this by: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>creating strict ethical frameworks that therapists must commit to<\/li>\n<li>providing resources and guidance to members so they can be better therapists<\/li>\n<li>monitoring training programs to ensure they provide the best skills to new therapists<\/li>\n<li>provide information about counselling and psychotherapy to the general public<\/li>\n<li>stay on top of changes in the field and keep your therapist informed and current<\/li>\n<li>commission research around the practice of therapy<\/li>\n<li>work to influence government policies so that therapy is more accessible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In summary, the membership associations for therapists <em><strong>are there to make sure your therapist is constantly providing you with the best possible support.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Practical ways you can benefit<\/h2>\n<p><strong>You can turn to one of the psychotherapy membership associations if you: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>want to read about how therapy can help you<\/li>\n<li>would like to see a list of accredited therapists you can contact<\/li>\n<li>would like to research a therapist you&#8217;ve been working with<\/li>\n<li>feel your therapist has been unethical and would like to make a complaint<\/li>\n<li>are interested in being a counsellor or psychotherapist yourself, and would like to know how to start and what schools to consider.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>So who are these associations and how do they differ?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17040\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2017-03-02-at-09.24.44-400x159.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2017-03-02-at-09.24.44-400x159.png 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2017-03-02-at-09.24.44.png 430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>In the UK, there are three main membership registries, and several others for specialised kinds of psychotherapy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note that these boards do not register <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">personal coaches<\/a>, <\/strong>who are not strictly regulated in the UK. Although they can join different membership associations.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychotherapy.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\">UKCP \u2013 UK Council for Psychotherapy<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Over 8000 individual therapists belong to this registrar.<\/p>\n<p>In order to be on the UKCP registrar,<strong> a therapist must have studied at an institution accredited by the UKCP. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>*So if a therapist is registered with the UKCP, you know they have a good level of training from a reputable institute, college, or university.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\">British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy &#8211; BACP<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The BACP has over 40,000 members and was formed over 40 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>BACP accepts members who are students or retired who can then benefit from their resources. But of course <strong>they only recommend you work with at therapist who qualifies for their three &#8216;registered&#8217; memberships<\/strong>, which set very high standards in the industry. They include the following:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em><strong>Main Category \u2013 Registered Member (MBACP)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If your therapist has this membership, they have completed a BACP accredited course. Sometimes, if someone took a course that is not included in the BACP list, they can take a &#8216;Certificate of Proficiency&#8217; to be at this level.<\/p>\n<p><em>*If you are on a low budget and are happy to work with someone who is certified but maybe doesn&#8217;t have many years of experience yet, then look for this minimum level.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em><strong>Accredited \u2013 Registered Member (MBACP Accred)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To be at the accredited level, a therapist goes through a rigorous application and assessment process over several months.<\/p>\n<p><em>*<strong>A good quality standard to look for in any therapist.<\/strong> It means you are working with an experienced practitioner who has demonstrated their talent for working with clients and for maintaining high ethical standards. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em><strong>Senior Accredited &#8211; Registered Member (MBACP Sn Accred)<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a high level of membership for those <strong>practitioners who not only have extensive experience but have a specialist area they are accomplished in<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>*As a client seeking a therapist, this might be important <strong>if you have a certain mental health diagnosis<\/strong> and you&#8217;d like to work with someone who really understands your issues well.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">BPS &#8211; The British Psychological Society<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The BPS has been around for an impressive 110 years.<\/strong> Similar in their rigorous accreditation and commitment to public outreach as the BACP, <strong>they differ in that they focus on psychologists only. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>*As a client, this means that if you are interested in working with a counselling psychologist, this would be the registry you would want to access. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>[Not sure how a counselling psychologist differs? Read our article, &#8220;<span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-counselling-psychologist.htm\">What is a Counselling Psychologist?<\/a><\/span>&#8220;]<\/p>\n<p>The BPS provides memberships at many levels including &#8216;student&#8217;, &#8216;affiliate&#8217;, and &#8216;graduate&#8217;. But there is only one membership that means a psychologist is recommended for practice:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em><strong>Chartered Member (CPsychol) <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This involves <strong>a high level of psychological knowledge and expertise.<\/strong> To achieve this membership a therapist must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have a honours degree at a high level then undertaken post-graduate studies at a BPS accredited institution<\/li>\n<li>or, have post-grad training and experience teaching psychology or have completed research to a doctoral level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpsych.ac.uk\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\">Royal College of Psychiatrists<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Representing over 15,000 psychiatrists, this is <strong>the professional body to check with if you are choosing to work with a psychiatrist over a psychotherapist<\/strong> (the difference being that a psychiatrist in the UK can prescribe medication and has a medical degree as well as studying psychology).<\/p>\n<p>Look for the following membership levels:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><em><strong>Specialist Associateship (MRCPsych) <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Denotes minimum of ten years experience in psychiatry, and has specialist training which was either undertaken in the UK or has been assessed as an equivalent.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Fellowship (FRCHPsych) <\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Awarded to psychiatrists who have been members for at least 10 years and who are recognised as having made a significant contribution to the field of psychiatry.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/childpsychotherapy.org.uk\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">ACP &#8211; Association of Child Therapists<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>To be registered with the ACP, a child psychotherapist must complete a NHS child mental health training that is a minimum of four years long.<\/p>\n<p><em>*This is the registrar to refer to if you are seeing a therapist who works with children and adolescents.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Looking for a registered therapist?
