And is it really a big deal if the latter?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>The Rise of the &#8216;Hidden&#8217; Workaholic<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Convinced you aren&#8217;t a workaholic because you leave work at five each night? <\/strong>Just because you don&#8217;t work overtime does not mean you don&#8217;t have a problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Workaholism, like any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/addiction-help-guide.htm\">addictive behaviour<\/a>, is about using something as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">distraction<\/a> from dealing with life and uncomfortable emotions. If you are &#8216;on&#8217; all the time, there&#8217;s a chance you have a problem.<\/p>\n<h3>Workaholic symptoms explained<\/h3>\n<p><strong>There are classic symptoms of workaholism we all recognise<\/strong> by now. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>spending too much time in the office<\/li>\n<li>never taking lunch breaks or always &#8216;eating at your desk&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>rarely using all of your vacation or using it to stay at home and &#8216;catch up on work&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>being always &#8216;on&#8217; when it comes to work, even on days off or right before bed<\/li>\n<li>saying &#8216;yes&#8217; to extra work even if you don&#8217;t know how you&#8217;ll fit it in<\/li>\n<li>putting work before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">relationships<\/a>, hobbies, or even health (if you even have hobbies left).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Another classic sign of workaholism is <strong>over-identification with your job<\/strong>. Do you talk about work when you are actually out on social events, or on a date? Introduce yourself with your job title even when not asked what you do for a living? There will be a cycle of highs\/lows, a lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>, an increasing tolerance (you need more and more work to get your &#8216;high&#8217;), withdrawal symptoms if you are forced to stop, changes in your personality, and a tendency to hide the <a href=\"\/addiction-counselling-london.htm\">addiction<\/a> with excuses and white lies. <\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at how some of these <a href=\"\/addiction-counselling-london.htm\">addiction<\/a> cycles can manifest when it comes to work.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>TAKING YOUR HIGH FROM WORK<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you feel more excited thinking about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-goals.htm\"> work goals<\/a><\/strong> than about relationships and social events?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you get a buzz from really hard and full days of work<\/strong>, and feel low and cranky on the days there is no work to do?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have highs where you get so much done even you are impressed, and lows<\/strong> where you can&#8217;t seem to do anything and panic?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is work the thing you like to talk about most<\/strong>, even at social events or with family?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you make everything &#8216;work&#8217; these days?<\/strong> Needing to win at sports, making hobbies into money making ventures, even competing with your kids when playing games?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you feel empty or even secretly afraid if you are not busy<\/strong> with work or thoughts of work?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you use other addictive substances if there is no work to be done?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">Overeat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">drink too much alcohol<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>LACK OF SELF CARE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you long stopped choosing relationships that support and nourish you in favour of<\/strong> time with other &#8216;ambitious&#8217; sorts who you might secretly not even like, but who push you?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep<\/a> as less important<\/strong> than your success and getting more work done?<\/p>\n<p>Do you go to work<strong> even on the days when you feel sick?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>CHANGES IN PERSONALITY <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">never trust anyone<\/a> anymore to do things<\/strong>, and do it all yourself over delegating?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have no respect now for others who do not<\/strong> work as hard as you do?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have a low patience threshold with others, especially if<\/strong> they interrupt you at work?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you unable to relax<\/strong> when you don&#8217;t have work to do?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you get angry at yourself<\/strong> when you make mistakes?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do friends and family say<\/strong> you&#8217;ve changed?<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAKING EXCUSES \/ LYING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you make excuses for working long hours,<\/strong> for example, \u201cI like it when the office is peaceful in the morning&#8217; or &#8216;the trains later on at night are less busy&#8217;?<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/keeping-secrets-from-family.htm\">Do you lie <\/a>and tell your partner you were forced to work<\/strong> overtime when really it was your choice?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you say you are just going to relax and read or watch some television, but really<\/strong> you are on your computer working?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you hide your workaholism behind the fact that you are &#8216;freelance&#8217; or &#8216;an entrepreneur&#8217;<\/strong> with excuses like, &#8216;it&#8217;s different when you run your own business&#8217;?<\/p>\n<p>Do you tell yourself <strong>it&#8217;s justified to work as long or hard as you do because &#8216;you love what you do&#8217;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you ever told someone you are going out to have fun then secretly<\/strong> stayed home to work?<\/p>\n<h3>Does it really matter if I work too much?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Workaholism, if it&#8217;s long-term and with the hallmarks of <a href=\"\/addiction-counselling-london.htm\">addiction<\/a>, is highly destructive.<\/strong> It erodes your life and your health, and can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/depression-help-guide.htm\">depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-does-therapy-help-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/sleep-help-guide.htm\">sleep disorders<\/a>, and possibly a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">nervous breakdown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addiction to work can also mean you end up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">extremely lonely<\/a>,<\/strong> as workaholism pushes others away. It is a common reason for one partner to leave another or ask for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-after-divorce.htm\">divorce<\/a>, and also why many children grow up no longer wanting a relationship with a parent. &#8216;You were not there for me, you preferred work, so now I will no longer be there for you&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h3>What do I do if I think I&#8217;m a workaholic?<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">When work has reached the level of <a href=\"\/addiction-counselling-london.htm\">addiction<\/a> just &#8216;stopping&#8217; or &#8216;changing&#8217; is hard, even if you promise everyone that is exactly what you are going to do.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Seeking support is often necessary, and best done before things are out of hand<\/strong> and a breakdown is on the horizon.
